There is an interesting editorial in today’s O.C. Register. Their editorial board interviewed Congressman John Campbell. What he had to say was a breath of fresh air, particularly for those of us who have left the GOP. Here are a few excerpts from the editorial:
It’s not the best of times to be a Republican. The Orange County GOP continues to back a sheriff who is under indictment. The state’s Republican governor is trying to paper over a projected $14 billion budget deficit. And the national Republican Party, now a minority in Congress, is facing an uphill battle to retain the White House in 2008.
Yet these disparate problems have a similar root cause, according to U.S. Rep. John Campbell, the Irvine Republican who engaged in a wide-ranging discussion with the Register’s Editorial Board on Tuesday. The problems stem from the public’s loss of trust in the party, he said. That loss of trust
Art. Thank you for posting Congressman Campbell’s comments.
I was about to do a post myself but will share some thoughts here.
In his first address as governor of CA (on Jan 5, 1967),Ronald Reagan stated the following:
“Using the temporary authority granted by the people, an increasing number lately have sought to control the means of production, as if this could be done without eventually controlling those who produce. Always this is explained as necessary to the people’s welfare.” He then quotes Montesquieu, who in 1748 said the following: “the deterioration of every government begins with the decay of the principle upon which it was founded.”
Think about those words as it relates to the Republican Party who has allowed the size of government to grow beyond anyone’s wildest imagination, pork barrel projects, special interest accomodations and the list goes on.
Republicans have no ethical edge, and some of them can’t keep their word on anything. The Or. Co. fiasco is just one example of people who cannot be trusted.
At the county level, Republicans at the top are lobbyists and power-hungry, money-hungry creeps who have a stranglehold on the party. They cover for each other regardless of the crimes. Look at the whole bunch — Mike Carona and Chriss Street are just the tip of the iceberg. Even if Scott Baugh and his thugs would fold their tent, Mike Schroeder is waiting in the wings to take over. I am a Republican, and I would not support ANY of them or their fellow creeps for any office. They are an abomination.
In today’s Register, Frank Mickadeit discussed the tug-of-war over Tony Rackauckas’ endorsement. Who the **** would want it? Rackauckas deserves to be thrown out with the rest of them.
Is Congressman Campbell turning the corner? He also supported a bill that would outlaw discrimination against gays and lesbians.
