Sandra Hutchens appointed OC Sheriff

Posted by: Thomas Anthony Gordon  :  Category: "The OC", 1st District Supervisor, DPOC, Fresh Juice, LibOC, Mission Viejo, OC GOP, Orange County Sheriff, Paul Walters, Sandra Hutchens, Santa Ana

Let me start out by saying congratulations to Sandra Hutchens, newly appointed Sheriff of Orange County.

I hope that we can all come together a county, and allow Sheriff Hutchens to do her job, ensuring public safety and rebuilding the public trust in the department.

She faces almost insurmountable obstacles, both from inside and outside of the department she has been appointed to lead.

I know that she will give 150% of her heart and soul to Orange County and it’s residents.

I intend to seek a meeting with Sheriff Hutchens to ask the questions you want to know.

I also wish to thank Supervisors Moorlach, Nguyen and Bates for doing the right thing.

Now it’s time to put the past behind us and work together for a brighter future.

From Los Angeles Times California/Local section

Santa Ana council man gets something off his chest regarding new sheriff

    11:59 AM, June 10, 2008

Sounds like Santa Ana City Council member Carlos Bustamante knows why the Orange County Board of Supervisors selected Sandra Hutchens as Sheriff over Santa Ana’s own police chief, Paul Walters:

“I kept telling the chief, maybe we should get you some implants. Or a water bra.”

That’s what the Times’ Christian Berthelsen heard the council member tell a blogger after this morning’s announcement.

What a misogynist dillwad, the Space Commander. No wonder you lot can’t stand him. And of course he thought he was being real funny. How long till we see a Bustamante-with-a-bust photoshop Art or Thomas? First I need a Dana with panties on head though.

  3. 18vetern Says:

Well the good thing is Walters will be the Chief for the next 10 years.
Congratulations to Newly appointed Sheriff Hutchens.Good luck to her in taking on a very difficult&Challenging job.

Carlos Bustamante word of the day: Harassment

Carlos smiles and says, “My wife caught me in bed with my Sancha but that’s ok because I told her that harassment nothing to me.”

  5. Sean Says:

Can someone please explain the rationale behind Janet Nguyen’s desire to cast a secret ballot? She was elected to make tough decisions and then she tries to weasel out of it by calling for a secret ballot.

No doubt this was another one of her patented attempts to play both sides of the fence. Remember that in regards to Measure G she said she fully supported it as long as the voters did.

  6. Finish the Job Says:

    18vetern,
Are you high? We need to finish the job now and run Walters out of Santa Ana as fast as we can. He’s a corrupt silver-tounged devil.

At least now he has real motiviation to fight for his job which means we actually might see some attention given to our graffiti, gangs and homicide problems. I still think we need to get rid of him. He’s tried 3 times to leave us in the last 10 years. There’s no loyalty there at all.

Women with power are sexy. :) Congratulations Sandra… or should I say ‘Sheriff Hutchens?!’

Sean - regarding Janet. Would you rather have a politician who does the peoples’ business any way she can or one that ’stays the course?’ It’s mountains and molehills.

    SMS,

I want leaders who are willing to lead and don’t want to hide behind a secret ballot. She was elected to make tough decisions and to cast her vote in public. She did not want to do that today.

When she was told that she could not vote in secret she then pushed for writing her vote down on paper and having the clerk read it. She did not want to publicly proclaim her vote. Why?

This is a vote to see who’s gonna be hall monitor for a third grade class. This is a vote for Sheriff of OC. Janet’s gotta do better.

  9. Sarah Michelle Spinosa Says:

    Hey Sean -

To be fair, it was people like us (bloggers/media) that made this choice so controversial, not to mention Carona’s own actions that justifiably made the board of Supes skeptical of anyone nominated to replace him.

Haven’t you ever gotten out of a really bad relationship and then felt insecure in your next?

I see your point. I just think it’s a bit exaggerated under these unique circumstances is all.

Finish The Job put down the carck pipe and get used to Walters being the Chief for the next 10 years as the City Concil likes the Job he has been doing!!!

  11. Sarah Michelle Spinosa Says:

    18vetern -

I’m forced to agree. I don’t think the selection process hurt Walters’ prospects of a long career in Santa Ana either. The two events are seemingly unrelated, and if necessary, will be spun as such. I don’t think he’s going anywhere.

How many of the many candidates are already retired?

I guess the BOS was looking for a temporary clean-up chief to clean house for a younger fresh start chief to be elected by the voters at the next election.

  13. Art Pedroza Says:

    Sarah,

I am not so sure about that. Pulido and company worked very hard to get Walters the Sheriff’s job. They clearly would love to bounce him and replace him with someone cheaper…and someone even more subservient to them.

Don’t be surprised if Walters retires again in a year or two. Pulido and company will give him another raise first so he can add to his pension…

  14. Sarah Michelle Spinosa Says:

    Art -

Yeah, but that analysis ignores the possibility that Walters wanted the raise more than the job, in which case, he wins. Higher pay, with (potentially) less stress isn’t exactly a bad thing.

I’m honestly not too familiar with Walters other than knowing he’s presiding over a crime wave over there in SA, but if he’s supposedly nearly as crooked as Corona, wouldn’t he be more about money than power?

I guess I’m just saying it would be Walters’ call to leave since I don’t think the Pulido cabal can force him out, and neither must they if they wanted him to get the Sheriff position so badly.

    Once again, time will tell.

  15. Observer Says:

The supes may have done the politically smart thing by making a choice that won’t result in a range war. Men who criticize Sandra will be called sexist, and women who criticize her will be called bitches.

Three groups of people are happy: those who live in Santa Ana and want to keep Walters, those who live elsewhere and want Santa Ana to keep Walters, and those who wanted the OC Republican good old boys to lose another round.

  16. Dan Chmielewski Says:

I think Janet demonstrated that she doesn’t understand the Brown Act very well and that by even suggesting a secret ballot proves that she lacks the intellect to be effective on the BoS.

  17. Sarah Michelle Spinosa Says:

    Dan -

OK, so she’s not an expert on specific procedures. Maybe we should stage a recall over it? Would that put a Cheshire cat grin on your face? :P

And how much time did we waste debating Robert’s Rules at the DPOC special meeting when we should have been getting to the issues? Frank Barbaro’s the Chair and his Parliamentarian should have known the answers going in. Red herring much?

  18. Carl Overmyer Says:

    Tom,
Rumor has it that the OCS has now stopped giving out CCW’s as the state procribes “for cause” except to those who require it for business. This is of grave concern to those who actually have a need for self protection, outside of a work environment. The OCS was the first in the state to actually comply with state law when it developed a program to review applicants for CCW’s on a flat playing field, without the need to be connected. Not only is it shameful that the program is being abandoned, but if the new sheriff allows this to continue it isn’t going to bode will for the residents of the county overall who share the protective nature that allowing CCW’s brings to everyone. When criminals don’t know who will be an unarmed victim, but might actually be able to defend themselves and others they are less inclined to commit personal crimes in the first place. Both criminal interviews and stats bear that point out.

I would be most grateful if you get a chance to speak to our new sheriff in person that you not only make this point with her, but also let me know what her reasoning and responses are.

Thank you for asking for input.

  19. Dave Duringer Says:

I approached Pat Bates about the CCW issue at this morning’s State of the Community breakfast in Ladera Ranch. I asked Ms. Bates whether the appointment of Sandra Hutchens as Sheriff will mean a change in CCW issuance and renewal, and Ms. Bates replied that Ms. Hutchens made clear during the hearing there will be no change in policy (except there will be an audit of political c-a-ronies). After Ms. Bates’ comments I feel more comfortable about the situation but am still not sure about long-term fealty to the Second Amendment since no one talks about that. Maybe they are just playing safe til the election in 2011. Meanwhile, I’m focusing on educating as many people as I can about CCW. I’m flying to Utah this weekend to get approved as an instructor so I can help my fellow Californians carry legally while traveling in 33 OTHER states (but not their own). And I will also educate them on how to become an instructor and teach others. And so on. And so on.

  20. Pete Says:

I am also concerned Sandra Hutchens will change the current CCW policy. The current CCW policy is working well because it is clear, unambiguous and depoliticized. It allows normal, law-abiding residents the opportunity to protect themselves and their family. San Bernardino County residents enjoy a similar, yet more progressive CCW issuance policy. We need to continue bringing this message to our elected officials and the new sheriff. Ms. Hutchens has to recognize the residents of OC will not tolerate a Los Angeles County CCW policy, in which only celebrities and multi-millionaire campaign donors are worthy of the privilege

  21. Joseph Says:

Goodbye OC sheriff’s Department! She will destroy the morale completely.

What does this appointment say to the many fine men of the department that are all more qualified than she!

Voters have to get rid of Moorlach, Nguyen, and Bates!

  22. Saaduddin Shafi Says:

    Dear Ms. Sandra Hutchens,

Please accept our heartiest congratulations on being promoted to the Sherrif’s office at Orange County.
