Womens’ Sexual Independence… Or Something More Devious?

I Kissed A Girl

There’s been a lot of controversy surrounding this song and I’d like to get some feedback from my readers. Is this video furthering the cause of women’s sexual liberation (it’s Independence Day after all) or of degrading shows of misogyny usually for the benefit of someone’s boyfriend?

On the one hand she ‘kissed a girl and… liked it.’ On the other hand, the artist in question Katy Perry, is a 23 year old former Christian music singer, then-named Katy Hudson, who has admitted to targeting the tween-to-teen market (despite ‘Grandma Madonna’ being a big fan).

What message does this send to vulnerable young girls? That sexual experimentation is healthy for a person’s wellbeing or OK or even expected because it gets a man all hot and bothered?

Personally, I believe the former of course, but there have been many who argue the other way, and really, who can blame them? What happened to Barbies? They’re a thing of the past. It’s all about those damn over-sexualized Bratz dolls now!

Sure, I may think they’re adorable, but I’m 29. I don’t really think they’re appropriate for children… but then neither is ‘Family Guy’ and I’m sure many of us are guilty of letting our kids watch it because it’s animated. Most of the dirty jokes go over their little heads anyway, but this video doesn’t. Katy makes her feelings abundantly clear.

This is what I think. Sarah, you have managed to tear the very moral fabric of sacred heterosexual-only bonds that this great nation has been founded on AND made little baby Jesus cry, all at once.

I hope you’re happy with your pagan self, Sarah.

One thing’s for sure… this video is oh so playfully and delightfully naughty! I don’t know how straight women see it, but ‘I like(d) it!’ And the song is so catchy (went from #72 to #1 on Billboard I believe and it’s #1 on iTunes)!

It’s a real guilty pleasure if you ask me - politics aside.

Buffy, how delightfully provocative this post is. I think you need titilation. Well, I think the video is targeted at tweens who are dealing with sexual ideation. Yeah I think it justifies youthful experamentation. Would old men find it titilating as well? Of course and to different degrees. But would old men be looking for videos like this? No. We would only watch this by accident or because someone shared it with us.

LOL…she kinda cops out at the end of the video and it implies it was all a dream.

I think it was fun and edgy. Very cool. Those who get uptight about it are likely unsure about their own sexuality. I loved the very last scene!
