Usual Suspects To Pulido: Start Acting Like You're In Charge

miguelito

Inside sources tell me that the “Usual Suspects” aren’t happy with the way things are going at Santa Ana City Hall these days and they are letting Mayor Miguel Pulido know about. According to my sources the “Usual Suspects” believe that Mayor Pro Tem Claudia Alvarez appears to be exercising too much power on the city council and they want it to stop, NOW!

I was told that a meeting was held recently between Mayor Pulido and pair of original “Usual Supects” couples. Former Councilman Tom Lutz, his wife Nancy and Glenn and Julie Stroud sat down with the Mayor to express the displeasure with what they see as “Claudia Alvarez running this city”. They told Pulido that it looks to them as if Claudia is “the Mayor now” and the he needs to step in and start acting like he is the one in charge, not her.

The “Usual Suspects” have been gunning for Mayor Pro Tem Alvarez ever since she defeated Nancy Lutz for the Ward 5 city council seat in 2000. It also unnerves them to no end that Alvarez, more than any other councilmember, refuses to cave to their bullying and threats. The “Usual Suspects” days of having sway over what direction this city will go are quickly coming to an end and they blame Alvarez and her allies on the council, Sal Tinajero and Vince Sarmiento, as well as Michele Martinez.

The final straw for the “Usual Suspects” most likely came when the city council, including Mayor Pulido, booted Glenn Stroud from the Redevelopment Housing Commission last month. Thanks to the amendment offered up by Alvarez, Stroud’s dismissal was effective immediately.

Alvarez also publicly called out this band of angry gadfly’s from the council dais a few months back and referred to them as the “Usual Suspects”. This was the first time that any elected official had publicly called them the “Usual Suspects”, a term originally coined by myself and others here at the Orange Juice Blog. After that incident convicted felon Tim Rush cornered Alvarez and let her know that he and the other “Usual Suspects” were not happy with her. As if she really gives a damn.

It will be interesting to see if Pulido acts upon the concerns of the Lutz’s and Stroud’s. My guess would be that he will keep doing what he has been doing. Miguel is smart enough to count to four and currently Alvarez and her allies have the majority and the Mayor knows this. He would be silly to join up with Councilmember’s Carlos Bustamante and David Benevides and constantly be on the losing end of 4-3 votes just to appease those malcontents.

Frankly I would love to see Claudia Alvarez in the mayor’s seat, the people of Santa Ana should be so lucky. However until then we will have to be content with her “running this city” from the Mayor Pro Tem’s seat.

Good job Claudia! Keep up the good work.

    Claudia for Mayor says:

Hopefully if Claudia runs for Mayor Al Amezqua will do the right thing and not run. Claudia has put in the time and is showing herself to be a real leader. Santa Ana needs Claudia’s brand of leadership. (And I like the way she dresses too if I can say that without sounding sexist)

I too hope Claudia will decide to run for Mayor. She has always made herself available to me and my family. When we see a code violation or illegal activity we call Claudia and she always responds quickly to our needs. I wish more of the council were like her in this regard. In our neighborhood we have certain problem houses (in terms of code violations) and Claudia makes sure community perservation takes care of those items which really makes us happy. Claudia you have my vote. Given the current economy I don’t have much money to give but if you have a fundraiser at the Hacienda restaurant we will be there and all my friends will help walk for you too.

Oh to be able to go back into the OJ archives from 3-4 years ago and read what was written by Art and Sean about Ms. Alvarez and other on the Council. But alas…

    Ms. Washington Square says:

What I really respect about Claudia is that she follows through on her promises. We used to have a terrible problem with a few houses in my Washington Square neighborhood. One was a house where a crazy lady fed thousand of birds each day. It was a nasty mess. Another was a house which was overgrown with weeds and old junky cars. The last Councilperson never did anything to help. Since Claudia took office the bird lady is gone and a nice family bought it. The other guy is also gone from the falling down house and it’s being repaired too. When I think of Claudia I think of promises made and promises kept. Another Councilwoman named Lisa Bist was like that too when she was on the council according to my grandmother who lives in Wilshire Square. Since we can’t clone Claudia (and I’d like to!) and make her Mayor Pro Tem and Mayor, then let’s just elect her Mayor and hope someone else as good will run for her Council ward. P.S. Claudia also started these great concerts in our neighborhood and they are lots of fun and bring us all closer together.

Go back and dig up all you can. The only time I criticized Claudia is when she joined the band of bigots in their lynching, errr, recall of Nativo.

I have supported Claudia other than that. In fact I was there at her mothers office in 2000 to celebrate her victory over Nancy Lutz.

I think perhaps you have confused me with former OJ’ers and failed bloggers like “Tommy Boy” Gordon or “Fraudio” Gallegos.

Interesting that you’re usually unable to grant the grace you’re now granting Ms. Alvarez to those who have done less severe than that.

    #6,

Claudia has more than made up for her siding with the lynch mob. More than any other member of the city council she has stood tall and strong in the face of the “Usual Suspects” and their agenda. For that I am quite willing to overlook that blemish.

Thank you Sean for standing up for what is right. I have always admired you going back over 20 years when you would stand up in public comments at Council meetings and give it to the council. I never knew you then and we have only talked a few times but I’m so glad you are not afraid of the suspects. Please keep writting about them. You are one of the few I trust!

Before Midget Mayor Pulido begins to act like a Mayor, he’ll need to ask Claudia to give him back his “family jewels”. I guess the Usual Suspects are the last to know that Pulido is not in charge. Claudia, You Go Girl!

    Just in Time says:

I still think that Santa Ana deserves a full time mayor and full time city council.

Santa Ana is a large city and it is IMPORTANT enough.

The present form of gov’t is pretty much outdated for this city.

We can’t seem to get 100% commitment from those that represent us.

    Just in Time says:

    I have mentioned this before

we need a full time city government– this would require a change to our city charter-

which should be revisited along with collaborative efforts for an inclusive and progress promoting strategic plan for our city.

I’d be glad to lead on this– with the help of good minds and unselfish agendas.
