If Jerry Brown is counting on Antonio Villaraigosa to deliver the Latino vote, he is quite mistaken!
I am beginning to wonder if California’s Latino voters are going to bother to vote in November. The Democrats have zero Latino candidates running for statewide office.
The Democratic gubernatorial candidate, Jerry Brown, appears to be doing nothing to reach out to Latinos, while his opponent, the hated Meg Whitman, is spending heavily on Spanish language ads.
This is not a presidential election. It is a mid-term election, offering even more reason for Latinos to stay home. They don’t have much at stake.
Imagine what effect this could have, particularly here in Orange County.
If Latinos don’t vote, State Senator Lou Correa may well lose to his GOP challenger, Anaheim Councilwoman Lucille Kring. And Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez could lose to her GOP challenger, Assemblyman Van Tran.
And Santa Ana mayoral candidate Alfredo Amezcua will likewise lose as he is betting everything on the Latino vote.
How did the Democratic Party of California end up with zero Latino statewide candidates? They had a lot of candidates in the primary, but none was able to beat out their competition, and in some races multiple Latino candidates split the vote.
At the very least, Brown needs to get cracking with his own Spanish language outreach. His website doesn’t even offer a Spanish language version. That is without excuse.
Democrats have always taken Latinos for granted. This time they may pay for it.
Orange County needs Kring and Tran vs. hack Latino-prejudiced politicians.
Golightly,
That is debatable but thanks to the Dems taking Latinos for granted, that just might happen…
post 1. notice its not the best person for the job . but the best latino . is their something wrong there .
great one,
You’re right. What about Latinas?
To repeat myself:
I doubt Latinos, or anyone else, are gonna look at a ballot that includes
Loretta Sanchez, congress
Lou Correa, state senate
and Jose Solorio, assembly
and say to themselves:
“Gee! None of these are ‘STATEWIDE’ races.”
ON THE OTHER HAND
I don’t think Washington Dems deserve Latinos’ vote at this point, having done approximately Jack Shit on immigration reform or Dream Act at this point. (not that there aren’t other issues Latinos care about actually, so maybe I’m wrong)
Vern,
Good point, but the big emphasis in November will indeed be the statewide races – and the Dems didn’t bother to invite any Latino candidates along.
I hope I am wrong but this could turn out to be a real mess!
vern why do you think that they have done nothing on immigration and the dream act . it is because they know it rewards law breakers and people who cut in front of lines . and most of the AMERICAN VOTERS DONT WANT IT .
Well if they don’t vote, they can’t complain…….They have the power to take the Mansoors of the political world and put them where they belong. If they choose to sit on thier hands it will only get worse.
Folks. I have stayed out of this debate, until now.
As a recount Observer in the 1st District BOS special election, eventually won by Janet Nguyen, I later spoke at a related BOS meeting where I pointed out that while the election was decided by 7 votes, over 150,000 voters stayed home, many from Santa Ana. There were 205,459 registered voters at that time.
My sense is that many of the same registered Latino voters will be MIA on Nov 2nd.
Every vote counts. The proof is that we took out our Mission Viejo mayor MacLean by 19 votes.
Latinos and Latinas!
Please register! Please vote! By not voting, you can’t complain! You have so much power……why don’t you USE it?
Maybe the answer is to set up polling places in the parking lot of every Home Depot.
