Yesterday, I reported on the release of a statement by the Grrl Fair collective alleging that several incidents of sexual harassment, including minors, were committed by an unnamed perpetrator during last month’s International Women’s Day celebration at the Santora Arts Building in Santa Ana that they organized. Reports were filed with the SAPD as the collective members reached out to the gallery tenants and the building manager as well about the situation. Without seeing adequate progress, the Grrl Fair collective and their supporters have decided to take their grievances to the streets.
With a protest looming during the next Art Walk in the area on May 7th, my colleague Gustavo Arellano weighed in with more on the story this morning. On his Navel Gazing blog post, the journalist recounts how he spoke with a few of the artists in the Village about the allegations. Arellano writes:
“they not only confirmed that one of their own acted inappropriately during Grrl Fair and had acted inappropriately in the past, but also urged me not to write anything, claiming they had the issue under control because they wrote a letter to the artist in question.”
That passage runs parallel with a related anonymous posting on the Stop Street Harassment blog that charged that certain artists wanted to keep the alleged incidents under wraps, “because they didn’t want people to think badly of the building.” Yes, that’s right, image posturing on behalf of the ‘good name’ of the Artists Village took precedence over a very serious matter in need of appropriate action — more than writing a letter could ever hope to truly rectify.
This story is sure to continue to develop in the lead up to the march and rally on May 7th in front of the Artist Village. Being the first Saturday of the month, people will be out and about for the Art Walk.
Add protest signs to the whole downtown “experience” that night.
And Gustavo Arellano is your colleuge how?
Do you work as a journalist? or is it because you both contribute to blogs.
Perhaps because you are both Mexican? Please clear this up.
He’s very much a Weekling.
Clearly because we are both Mexicans from Anaheim. Haha!
Oh. I thought it was just because you both work for the Weekly.
I believe Gabriel and Gustavo are USA born so they are American. Then they would be colleagues with dkmfan also if he is American. Might have to show birth certificates. Real ones not fakes or the Teabaggers will get involved and produce a chimp picture to explain the fake birth certificates. Of course no racism intended.
“Might have to show birth certificates.”………. Hmmmmm
Better yet, let them show us the pictures of their parents.
Why don’t you tell us who this potential rapist is? Please identify the artist and space so we can avoid it.
From the statement of the Grrl Fair collective:
“Since the police have not processed our reports we cannot give out this man’s name. We can only let you know, as long as that man is there, downtown is not a safe space for women and girls.”
I’d say just go by that for the time being.
“why dont you tell us who the potential rapist is?” That is the problem!!!!!!!! You are a potential rapist. I am a potential rapist! And everyone is vulnerable to being accused (perhaps falsely.) This whole thing is disgustingly biased and uninformed. Purposely uninformed! Gabriel and Gustavo, you two are loosing all of my respect. Where was your investigative journalism? What do you know about the process of law? What do you care about innocent people being dragged through slanderous mud?
“Since the police have not processed our reports we cannot give out this man’s name. We can only let you know, as long as that man is there, downtown is not a safe space for women and girls.”
If you feel threatned, do not go to downtown santa ana, until this matter is resolved. Grrl Fair is not going to put anyone at risk, which is why it was a mistake on Santora’s part to not inform the collective of this before the event.
Who is going to protect innocent people from being slandered by bloggers? That is where people should feel unsafe right now.
Nice picture there! Nice community! thanks for doing your best to slander it!
Gabriel. How old are you man? How long have you been involved in this pseudo- journalism affair? Is this all something that you intend on taking more seriously at some point? By all means pursue it! Do it professionally though. Try some investigation! Which college course is that? 300? 450? Bring it! Please! Try talking to the people that you choose to slander. You might actually find a more interesting article. Your buddy knows where to find us.
Stan,
““Might have to show birth certificates.”………. Hmmmmm
Better yet, let them show us the pictures of their parents.”
What would this prove to you?
In your case doc?……. whether or not you can mix the amalgam with cloven hooves.
“The collective that put together last month’s Grrl Fair has just issued a statement today on their plans to protest outside of Santa Ana’s Artists Village on May 7th. The International Women’s Day celebration featuring local bands, art, vendors and workshops, they say, was marred by repeated instances of sexual harassment. The statement reads:
During the Grrl Fair event On March 12, 2011 in the Santora Building of the Downtown Santa Ana Artist Village there were incidents of women and underage girls being inappropriately touched by a gallery tenant. This included Grrl Fair staff.”
This occurrence at any level would demand and result in immediate and swift action by all parties required to act to such a complaint. Imagine this occuring at a school, employment, gymnastic class or minor soccer league.
Hopefully the Santa Ana PD is doing so. The group and individuals allegedly sexually violated say those advised of the alleged incident have been unresponsive.
Possibly the perceived unresponsiveness is about the investigative process. If not city legal issues could be staggering.

In your case doc?……. whether or not you can mix the amalgam with cloven hooves.
I thought so. Your are nothing more than an ignorant fool with a pointed tail and horns.
How so?
“pointed tail”…….. Hmmmm
I am not circumcised.
Your alleged superior intelligence should be able to have the answer.
Obviously it does that is why I ask.
“Obviously it does that is why I ask.”……….Hmmmmmmm
.
“Hmmmm”…. What?
It looks like there is a missing link in your DNA, doc.
“Hmmmm”…. What?
It looks like there is a missing link in your DNA, doc.”…………………….again Hmmmmmmm
This is embarrassing!
Now I am not surprised that your client lost in the Santa Ana mayoral election.
“This is embarrassing!
Now I am not surprised that your client lost in the Santa Ana mayoral election.”…………..Hmmmm
Exactly embarrassing. What does your rambling have to do with the blog thread? Stay on topic. Why is something so simple be so difficult for your alleged superior intellect.
.
Hmmmmmmm Hmmmmmmmm Hmmmmmmmm
Still, all of this would have been unnecessary, Doc, if you’d just let Gustavo and Gabriel call themselves Mexicans like they enjoy doing. Just like Stan’s a Czech and I’m an Irish-Mexican. Of course we’re ALL Americans.
“Now I am not surprised that your client lost in the Santa Ana mayoral election.”…………Hmmmmmmm
You have lost this race every time you ran. Multiple times. You were the campaign consultant, campaign manager and the CANDIDATE. This is understandable from average or low intellects……but this, from an alleged superior intellect. How sad.
Sorry Vern. I will stop now.
From my perspective !
Ya, this guy is obviously going to attack ALL women in Santa Ana. Stay Home.
If you believe all that is written and are scared from all the sensationalized OPINIONS & HEARSAY that you have read then stay away.
Keep in mind that say that this person was IN PUBLIC, (that is scary) with hundreds of people around, was drunk, and inappropriately touched a clothed female, after 11pm, (I’m shaking).
In addition be extra careful and watch out for the men that hid in the shadows, that hid in wait for their next victim. The ones that trick you into thinking they are sincere, they deliberately seduce you, lure you to a place where you are alone and vulnerable. Better stay home, lock the doors.
Ya, I guess the two situations a about the same, “hang ’em high” and his friends, associates, and family too.
NO trial needed, no mercy allowed, If it is written in a blog . . . well, it must be TRUE!
That’s my perspective !
Kalim Quevedo. Basement. Corner gallery STAY AWAY from there!
