Comparing this to the First Election Night Tally allows one to calculate how candidates fared in all but “Early Enough Absentees/VBMs.” Comparing it to the Final Election Night Tally allows one to calculate trends since Election Night.
The content of this post will be revised after each new report from the Registrar. At least that’s the plan.
The Registrar of Voters Office includes a link for you to determine “What’s Left to Count?” Knowing full well that you’re not likely to go to the Registrar of Voters site, we’ll update that information here daily as well. They count ballots after Election Day in a certain order, so the Vote-By Mail ballots in the first few days will tend to push the results in a Republican or conservative direction, while the later Provisional votes will tend to push results in a Democratic or liberal direction. If you don’t take account of what has been counted, you will be confused by this change in how the numbers tend to zig, then zag, from day to day.
Total estimated number of ballots to count (after Election Day): 150,305 165,305 177,305 180,305 176,269

Total estimated number of vote-by-mail ballots returned at the polls left to count: 66,000 62,208 26,362 9765 5385 2356 446 [50?] 0
Total estimated number of election day paper ballots to count: 5,792 5,500 5,450
Total election day paper ballots counted: 0 5250 5,450
Total estimated number of election day paper ballots left to count: 5792 542 342 50 0
Here’s my understanding of the significance of these categories.
- The vote-by-mail (VBM) votes sent late will tend to skew conservative, though closer to the Election Day totals because people waited to mail them in.
- The provisional (PROV) votes will tend to skew liberal because of who tends to have to vote using them.
- The vote-by-mail-returned-at-polls (VBMRAP) votes tend to be closer to the Election Day totals than regular VBMs.
- The Election Day paper ballot votes tend to skew towards both the left and right extremes that don’t trust our voting machines.
We’ll use my race against Brett Barbre for MWDOC Water Board Seat 1 as an example.
First Election Day Tally (“Early Enough VBMs”): Barbre 13,867, 67.7%; Diamond 6,601, 32.3%
Final Election Day Tally (“All but the Above Categories”): Barbre 26,587, 66.6%; Diamond 13,355, 33.4%
Election Tally 11/5 (“Adding Later Arriving VBMs”): Barbre 27,605, 66.7%; Diamond 13,804, 33.3%
Election Tally 11/6 (“Adding Later Arriving VBMs”): Barbre 29,650, 66.8%; Diamond 14.766, 33.2%
Election Tally 11/7 (Adding all VBMs): Barbre 30,711, 66.9%; Diamond 15.214, 33.1%
Election Tally 11/8 (Almost all VBMs): Barbre 32,235, 66,9%; Diamond 15,960, 33.1%
Election Tally 11/10 (Almost all but Provisionals): Barbre 33,673, 66.9%; Diamond 16,669, 33.1%
Election Tally 11/11 (Almost all but 2/3 Provisionals): Barbre 33,874, 66.9%; Diamond 16,782, 33.1%
Election Tally 11/12 (Almost all but 1/2 Provisionals): Barbre 34,332, 66.8%; Diamond 17,035, 33.2%
Election Tally 11/13 (Almost all but 1/3 Provisionals): Barbre 35,028, 66.8%; Diamond 17,431, 33.2%
Election Tally 11/14 (Almost all but 1/7 Provisionals): Barbre 35,182, 66.8%; Diamond 17,503, 33.2%
Election Tally 11/15 (All but 50 Paper): Barbre 35,192, 66.8%; Diamond 17,507, 33.2%
Election Tally 11/17 (All Counted): Barbre 35,192, 66.8%; Diamond 17,507, 33.2%
[From Wednesday 11/5]: The addition of 1467 votes — 1018 for Barbre, 449 for me — moved the election his way, as would be expected of VBMs. That trend should continue for several more days, during which I lose ground, until the late-but-timely VBMs are exhausted and the provisionals start to help me gain back ground towards my goal, which is to keep him exactly at that 66.6% figure — no more, no less!

Amazingly, no one on the Internet has ever posted a photo of their tattoo of a map of Orange County!

Are you interested in whether your vote-by-mail ballot was included in the first tally, or is being counted now?
You can look up when your ballot was received here:
http://www.ocvote.com/voting/vote-by-mail-voting/vote-by-mail-status-lookup/
They estimate about 40,000 VBM ballots didn’t get counted in that initial run. On this page, http://www.ocvote.com/voting/vote-by-mail-voting/vote-by-mail-ballots-returned/ we can see see that the ballots arriving on Nov. 3 and Nov. 4 itself totaled about 35,340. The previous ballots, coming in Nov. 1, totaled about 20,000. So, if these figures hold: if your ballot arrived on Nov. 1, there’s about a 25% chance that it wasn’t already counted. If it arrived after that, it wasn’t already counted. If your ballot didn’t arrive, next time be sure that you DO either mail it earlier or take it with you to the polls.
Would it be too much to ask to have you remove the Irvine and Anaheim results? It’s just so painful.
I NEED A HUG JORDAN!!! You know where to find me in Northwood buddy.
DAMN YOU GREG DIAMOND!!!!!!!!!!
*A couple of things…….33.6% of eligible voters. The vote in Anaheim for Districts and increasing the number on the City Council is healthy if thats what it means. In Costa Mesa, a couple of anomalies that are interesting….with at least one being not healthy. With so many uncounted absentee votes out there…..there is every chance Righeimer is going to lose. 2ndly, do our eyes decieve us – Did those dupes in Costa Mesa actually vote FOR Toll Lanes on the 405? Ridiculous! The takeover of the City Council in Newport Beach has a very old ring to it. Maybe, we are going to get a New City Manager pretty soon. The Measure “Y” vote however could have been the well spring for the entire election……these folks in charge sometimes can be both greedy and impatient. This may have been one of those times! Interesting to see all the cities that kept their Council Members….like Laguna for example. They actually have a good working city. Guess the situation in Fullerton is hopeless…..they re-elected their two because …….well, you know! Congrats to Mimi, Dana, Loretta, Linda and Ed…..our Congressional group from the greater OC is secure for another two years! Don’t know much about Lisa Bartlett but someone out there will tell us no doubt. It will be interesting to see how Michelle Steele votes on a variety of issues…..including the Homeless Problem. Good luck to all those elected. Still think it stinks about Webster and the Humpty Dumpty Act our local Elephant Hit Squad pulled on him..
“2ndly, do our eyes decieve us – Did those dupes in Costa Mesa actually vote FOR Toll Lanes on the 405? Ridiculous! ”
Ah – I hadn’t even looked at Measure P. It DID pass 53% to 46%. But that doesnt’ mean 46% of Costa Mesans want toll lanes. Maybe 3% might. 40%+ percent didn’t want anything to do with this toothless, politically manipulative Righeimer gesture – another good sign.
You should read it.
53% voted to agree with the council to oppose toll lashes.
Passing is good.
I see that fine, upstanding citizen Rob Zur Schmiede won for Laguna council.
The douchebag pushed relentlessly for every crappy redevelopment atrocity when he worked for City of Fullerton while being at best dismissive and at worst contemptuous of local protestations, and at the very same time he was lobbying to prevent development that was ‘inconsistent with the character and charm’ of his beloved home town, Laguna Beach. Dick.
To clear the air, regarding that political advisory measure P against the toll roads in Costa Mesa. You will never get the answer you want because it was written so badly. The first question asks if you want a toll road on the 405? The second questions asks ” if you agree with the city council to oppose the toll road on the 405″?
It asks to questions that begs two separate answers. So I expect the vote to be completely muddled. Thank god it’s an advisory measure and is meaningless.

The Fullerton City Council Race was interesting. Reading the Fulerton Rag for the first time I finally realized that Matt is dating Jane and that’s why it is so obvious slanted towards her. She has ran and failed about 1/2 dozen times I hope she takes the hint. The other guy (paden) who has ran and failed at least 2 times should realize he may have better luck doing something else. Kinda got tired of his smudge face. You guys should write a piece on Levinson who may have assaulted or at least intimidated a vendor at a city council meeting. Whitaker and Sebourn were utter cowards and couldn’t do the right thing but what do expect when some of their own spouses work that way
That’s a lot of negativity coming from someone being “honest.”
There’s plenty of coverage on the Levinson event elsewhere. If you’d like to write something up, we’ll consider publishing it.
Not negative speaking the truth. I can’t believe you here are tolerating the behavior of Levinson without as much as a peep. I guess it’s ok if it’s not your wife right?
I doubt you would publish anything I would submit.
Write it and find out.
You have a very strange definition of “tolerate”. As for the rest of your comment, it’s not worth a response.
How many times did Chaffee run before being elected? Right.
It’s a rare event that someone who could actually do some good on the council gets elected, the rest of the time it’s the same old story, a revolving door of insiders and panderers motivated solely by petty ambition – emphasis on petty.
I hope Jane runs more and wins. Paden? Well one could certainly do worse. In fact I think one just did.
Alright, take it easy. Sean accomplished quite a bit in three months of campaigning.
His campaign manager owns the blame for the vote total.
I don’t think he accomplished anything ecept not coming in dead last ahead of Chaffee’s brother. I hope Jane runs again and again and again it’s cute how Matt prints his slanted articles to try and help Jane out while censoring those with differing opinions.
I’m sure we are all sorry that you were the last person to know that Matt and Jane have been practically married for about as long as anyone can remember. And does he really censor people? This is the first I hear of it. How rude were you?
Maybe you’re the last to know that I’m a friend of Matt & Jane. Also that, like fullertonrag, it’s a good day when my blog gets plural clicks. You’re not hitting very high if you try to pick on either of us.
I put this in the wrong post earlier, so here it is again, where somebody might see it:
Last time, Jane came in first among those candidates without any big money behind them. This time, she beat one who had the firefighters’ union wasting money on him.
She gives those of us who look long & hard for someone honest to support something to do, but I understand the strain on her. It’s completely up to her whether to continue running a campaign that will always have far more sweat and shoe leather than money.
“A half dozen times” is off by about 100%.
Hear, hear, Mudge.
Well, Bennett isn’t going to be Fullerton’s next councilman. That’s something.
That is a relief.
VBMRAP Not Called “Surrendered Ballots”
There are two types of Vote-by-Mail ballots collected at the polls: 1. Vote-by-Mail-Returned-at-Polls—those that were dropped off in lieu of mailed. 2. Surrendered Vote-by-Mail—those that were relinquished (forfeited/rendered useless) to enable the voter to vote electronically.
https://www.ocvote.com/volunteer/poll-worker-resource-center/election-supplies/ (#35)
http://www.ocvote.com/voting/election-laws-and-legislation/elections-code/view/?section=17301. (§17301.(b)(9))
You are correct. The appropriate changes have been made in both posts where the errors appeared.
*OK folks, please understand something. Anything that is labor intensive is at the whim and fancy of the Registrar. They have about 10 folks checking in finite detail whether the Provisional Ballots are real. They have to match the signatures to the ballots surrendered at the polls. Where and why most Provisional Ballots ARE NOT COUNTED is because of the Labor Intensive nature of checking whether someone still lives at the current address or they actually moved, whether the girl married someone and changed her name, whether the person that came from out of state actually had residency…….so, as you can see…..the only Provisional Ballots that we have ever heard of that are counted …..were back in 1994 when Mail in and Provisional ballots dated a week after the election were counted, in order to alter election results. That Registrar retired, got two Golf Memberships for Life and moved out of state. We are just saying……
New results are up. Updated “What’s Left to Count” up shortly.
All but 50 votes counted. No lead changes. Bao up by 15.
Now updated with “all but the last 50 paper ballots” figures.
In, OC, Measure J is at 55.10316900001%. I’m prepared to round that off to 55.103169%.
In LA, the report as of Nov. 14 is:
55% OF VOTES CAST
Measure J Votes Percent
COLLEGE IMPROVEMENT BONDS
YES 1,946 51.06
NO 1,865 48.94
Registration 11,729
Precincts Reporting* 16
Total Precincts 16
% Precincts Reporting 100
In OC, our raw numbers are:
J-North Orange County Community College District, Fullerton/Cypress Colleges Bond Measure
Completed Precincts: 522 of 522
Vote Count Percentage
Bonds – Yes 82,733 55.1%
Bonds – No 67,409 44.9%
So, adding those together, we’re at:
82,733+1,946=84,679
67,409+1,865=69,274
… and that, Chris Nguyen, is 55.0031503121%.
Nine more “no” votes would put it at 54.9999350489%.
If 100 more votes came in from LA County, with the same 51% approval, it would put the percentage at 55.0005517582%.
But if those 100 more votes with only 49% approval, it would put the percentage at 54.9992535037%.
If those 100 more votes came in at 50%? How about this: 54.9999026309%!
Of course, we don’t know how many more votes will come in from LA County, let alone their percentage. I’m not even sure who could (or would) ask for a recount.
By the way, Measure I — the Fullerton High School Bond Measure — also stretches into LA County. It has 59% in OC. Could LA votes doom it?
