2020 OC Filings #11 (as of 8/4) for Elementary School District Boards

.

.

.

Where are you, Miss Mary Ann, now that we really need you?

As noted in our introduction to this year’s general election coverage, the filing period for all races is underway; it ends this Friday, August 7 (or 8/6, for cities closed on 8/7, and with some extensions to 8/12) for all races that have made it this far.  This will be updated as need be and time allows.

Not every city (or group of cities) has a single “unified” school board for all grades from (pre-)K through 12.  Some will divide them up between an “elementary” school board and a “secondary” — or high school — school districts.  This post addresses the elementary school districts.

Anaheim Elementary School District

Area 1

Incumbent Jackie Filbeck has qualified, so no overtime.  Only one other person pinged.

Area 3

Incumbent Jose Paolo Magcalas has qualified, as has challenger … uh, Lucille Kring???  For an elementary schooldistrict????  To the ramparts!

Buena Park School District

Area 3

Incumbent Tharwa Ahmad pinged but has made no move since then.  Bruce Johnson — more on him later, if necessary — pulled papers, but that’s it.  This will go into overtime.

Area 4

Incumbent Irene Castaneda hasn’t made a move.  L. Carole Jensen has qualified.  Overtime likely.

Centralia School District

Area 3

Incumbent Elizabeth “Liz” Gonzalez has qualified and has no visible opposition.  No overtime.

Area 4

Incumbent Ian Macdonald hasn’t made a move.  Challenger Lamiya Hoque has qualified.

Cypress School District

Area A

Incumbent Brian Nakamura has qualified and is unopposed.

Area E

Incumbent Candi Kern has qualified and is unopposed.

Fountain Valley School District

Two seats; three qualified.  Two have made no product.

  • Incumbent Jeanne Galindo has qualified
  • Incumbent Ian Collins has qualified.
  • Steve Schultz has qualified.

Area 2

Incumbent Hilda Sugarman has qualified and is unopposed.

Area 5

Neither incumbent Jeanette Vasquez nor her challenger have done anything beyond pinging.

Huntington Beach City School District

Area 1

Incumbent Bridget Kaub has apparently done just about everything needed to qualify, but hasn’t.  She has no opponent.

Area 3

Incumbent Ann Sullivan has qualified and is unopposed.

La Habra City School District

Two open seats.  Incumbent Sandra Baltes hasn’t pulled papers, so if she’s eligible, then overtime.

  • Incumbent John Dobson has qualified and is currently unopposed.
  • Three potential opponents have done nothing or next to nothing

Lowell Joint School District

Area 1

Incumbent Melissa Salinas has qualified and is unopposed.

Magnolia School District

Area 2 (short term)

Incumbent Connie Martin has qualified and is unopposed.

Area 3

Incumbent Barbara Clendineng has qualified and is unopposed.

Area 4

Incumbent Nathan Zug has qualified and is unopposed.

Ocean View School District

Incumbents Norm Westwell and Gina Clayton Tarvin both qualified and face no opposition.

Savanna School District

Incumbents Christie Brown and Christina Karanick have both qualified and face no opposition.

Westminster School District

Incumbent Frances Nguyen not filed.  David Johnson is on the ballot.  Another person just pinged.

About Greg Diamond

Somewhat verbose attorney, semi-disabled and semi-retired, residing in northwest Brea. Occasionally ran for office against jerks who otherwise would have gonr unopposed. Got 45% of the vote against Bob Huff for State Senate in 2012; Josh Newman then won the seat in 2016. In 2014 became the first attorney to challenge OCDA Tony Rackauckas since 2002; Todd Spitzer then won that seat in 2018. Every time he's run against some rotten incumbent, the *next* person to challenge them wins! He's OK with that. Corrupt party hacks hate him. He's OK with that too. He does advise some local campaigns informally and (so far) without compensation. (If that last bit changes, he will declare the interest.) His daughter is a professional campaign treasurer. He doesn't usually know whom she and her firm represent. Whether they do so never influences his endorsements or coverage. (He does have his own strong opinions.) But when he does check campaign finance forms, he is often happily surprised to learn that good candidates he respects often DO hire her firm. (Maybe bad ones are scared off by his relationship with her, but they needn't be.)
