It looks like former SAUSD Trustee Nativo Lopez finally got busted.  Here is what the L.A. Times is reporting:

Felony charges have been filed and an arrest warrant issued for an Orange County political activist suspected of committing election and voter registration fraud, the California secretary of state’s office announced Wednesday.

Investigators in the agency’s election fraud unit said Nativo V. Lopez, 57, of Santa Ana leased office space in Boyle Heights and registered to vote using that address although he lived with his family in Orange County. They also say Lopez, president of the Mexican-American Political Assn., cast an illegal ballot in L.A. in the 2008 presidential primary. Read more…

Orange County Republicans resort to marrying Latinas in order to court the Latino vote

Apparently Orange County Republicans have resorted to marrying Latinas as their main form of Latino outreach.  The latest example of this is Capistrano School Board member Ken Maddox, who now goes by Ken Lopez-Maddox.

According to an August/September 2003 survey by WEDDINGBELLS magazine (search), 94 percent of 5,000 brides polled were taking their husband’s name, either wholesale or hyphenated, and 6 percent were maintaining their maiden name.  They had no research regarding men taking their wive’s names.

So Ken is treading new ground here.  But the real irony is that he has a long history of immigrant bashing.

In one funny episode, two Latina activists visited Maddox to ask him about his connections to Barbara Coe and her hateful CCIR organization.  Here is an excerpt from an online article explaining what happened after he denied any connection to CCIR: Read more…

City of Santa Ana is promoting anti-bear locked trash cans, according to the L.A. Times

Is the City of Santa Ana trying to stop Mexican bears from stealing recyclables out of trash cans?

“Fed up with urban foragers who root through neighborhood trash in search of plastic and aluminum, residents of one Santa Ana neighborhood are locking up their recyclables in a container designed to withstand the brute strength and cunning of brown and black bears,” according to the L.A. Times.

We wrote about this a few weeks ago when the O.C. Register broke the story.  It is obviously yet another attempt by Santa Ana’s Usual Suspects, in the Wilshire Square Neighborhood, to bash Mexicans.

But the Register missed a tiny detail.

“It was pretty much a given that the economy was driving the increase in scavenging,” said Mary Gonzales, the city’s project manager, who is overseeing the program. Read more…

What do you think of President Obama's pick of Sonia Sotomayor for the U.S. Supreme Court?

“Slightly more than half — 54% — said they would like to see the Senate confirm the president’s first nominee for the nation’s highest court, according to the results of a Gallup Poll released today. Just 28% of those surveyed said they opposed Sotomayor’s confirmation, and 19% had no opinion, according to the poll conducted Friday through Sunday,” according to the L.A. Times.

It sure looks like Rush Limbaugh and the Republicans are blowing it by so vigorously opposing Sotomayor.  But then what would you expect of them?

Santa Ana’s Usual Suspects want to lock Mexicans out of their trash cans!

Posted by: Art Pedroza  :  Category: Fresh Juice, Santa Ana, latinos, usual suspects

It is easy to spot hard racism - but soft racism is a bit harder to track down.  Except in this case.  A group of angry white folks in Santa Ana’s Wilshire Square Neighborhood have screamed so much about Mexicans sifting through their trash that Santa Ana’s waste company, Waste Management, is now testing trash cans designed to stop Alaskan bears from stealing trash, according to the O.C. Register.

Thanks to Republican ex-President George W. Bush the entire world is in a global depression.  Santa Ana is number one in home foreclosures - and number one in violent crime in Orange County.  Yes - some folks have resorted to taking plastic, glass and aluminum containers from trash cans.  But guess what?  If they had some other means to survive they would not be doing that, would they?

The heartless Usual Suspects don’t care.  So they complain, complain and complain.  They say that folks are trying to steal their identities.  Well, that is why we should shred our sensitive trash!  Read more…

Sotomayor member of “Racist?” Latino organization

Are Sotomayors remarks and affiliations racist?

As President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee comes under heavy fire for allegedly being a “racist,” Judge Sonia Sotomayor is listed as a member of the National Council of La Raza, a group that’s promoted driver’s licenses for illegal aliens, amnesty programs, and no immigration law enforcement by local and state police.

According the American Bar Association, Sotomayor is a member of the NCLR, which bills itself as the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the U.S. Meaning “the Race,” La Raza also has connections to groups that advocate the separation of several southwestern states from the rest of America.

Over the past two days, Sotomayor has been heavily criticized for her racially charged statement: “I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experience would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life.” The remark was actually made during a 2001 speech at the University of California’s Berkeley School of Law. The lecture was published the following year in the Berkeley La Raza Law Journal.

President Obama picks a Latina for the U.S. Supreme Court

What do you think of President Obama's pick of Sonia Sotomayor for the U.S. Supreme Court?

“President Barack Obama tapped federal appeals judge Sonia Sotomayor for the Supreme Court on Tuesday, officials said, making her the first Hispanic in history picked to wear the robes of a justice,” according to the Sacramento Bee.

“Sotomayor is a self-described “Newyorkrican” who grew up in a Bronx housing project after her parents moved to New York from Puerto Rico. She has dealt with diabetes since age 8 and lost her father at age 9, growing up under the care of her mother in humble surroundings. As a girl, inspired by the Perry Mason television show, she knew she wanted to be a judge.”

This seems like an inspired pick!  Sotomayor was originally “appointed by a Republican, President George H.W. Bush, then named an appeals judge by President Bill Clinton in 1997.” Read more…

Nativo Lopez and MAPA reject Propositions 1A-1E!

Who would have thunk it?  Nativo Lopez sent out a mass email today, to his Mexican American Political Association (MAPA) email list, asking them to vote against all of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s propositions, except 1-F.

Lopez also reiterated his support for Gil Cedillo, in the 32nd Congressional District.

What can I say?  Thank you Nativo for opposing Propositions 1A-1E!

Will Mother’s Market make it in Santa Ana?

Posted by: Art Pedroza  :  Category: Fresh Juice, Santa Ana, latinos

Did Mother’s Market make a mistake by opening a store in Santa Ana?  My initial thought was that they really blew this one.  When I have visited their store, it has appeared to be empty.  So are they going to make it?

I found a marketing report that discovered that Latinos are more inclined to buy organics than Caucasians, which seems hard to believe.  Here is an excerpt:

Compared to Caucasian Americans, two ethnic groups we examined are relatively more likely to purchase organics: Asian Americans and, to a lesser extent, Latino Americans (Figure 1). What this means is that based upon their representation in the population, Asian Americans and Latino Americans are more likely to buy organics than Caucasian consumers. Even more surprising to many industry observers, when we look at the ethnic groups most likely to be Core organic consumers, we find that Latino Americans and African Americans are much more likely to be in the Core than Caucasian Americans (Figure 2). Latinos now the majority in Anaheim too

Posted by: Art Pedroza  :  Category: "The OC", Fresh Juice, anaheim, chris norby, janet nguyen, latinos, loretta sanchez, lou correa, van tran, vietnamese Americans

“Anaheim’s Latino population has more than tripled since 1980 and now stands at 186,000, making Orange County’s second-largest city the latest to become majority Latino — at 54.5% — according to new census estimates,” according to the L.A. Times.

No wonder Supervisor Chris Norby’s district is majority Latino - it includes a lot of Anaheim.  This could be a boon to La Habra Councilwoman Rose Espinoza if indeed she stays in the race for Norby’s seat.

This is bad news for Republican Assemblyman Van Tran and Republican County Supervisor Janet Nguyen.  If they are to prevail against Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez and State Senator Lou Correa, respectively, they need to carry Anaheim.  Good luck with that! Read more…

Angry Republicans intent on driving off a cliff

Posted by: Art Pedroza  :  Category: Fresh Juice, Republican Party, gay marriage, gop, immigration, latinos

Bill Maher wrote in a recent L.A. Times op-ed column that “If conservatives don’t want to be seen as bitter people who cling to their guns and religion and anti-immigrant sentiments, they should stop being bitter and clinging to their guns, religion and anti-immigrant sentiments.”

You expect that from Maher, but there’s more to the story, courtesy of Politico.com, “Sen. John McCain’s daughter and his campaign manager who last week demanded that their fellow Republicans embrace same-sex marriage. Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman – the most devoted modernizer among the party’s 2012 hopefuls – won approving words from New York Times columnist Frank Rich for his call to downplay divisive values issues. The party’s top elected leaders in Congress, meanwhile, spooked by being attacked as the “party of no,” were recasting themselves as a constructive, respectful opposition to a popular president.”

However there is a disconnect between party leaders and the party base, “Rank-and-file Republicans remain, by all indications, staunchly conservative, and they appear to have no desire to moderate their views. GOP activists and operatives say they hear intense anger at the White House and at the party’s own leaders on familiar issues – taxes, homosexuality, and immigration. Within the party, conservative groups have grown stronger absent the emergence of any organized moderate faction.” Read more…

It turns out that Santa Ana’s Floral Park has a racist history

Posted by: Art Pedroza  :  Category: Fresh Juice, SA City Council, Santa Ana, latinos, racism

I have never understood why certain neighborhoods in Santa Ana conduct annual home tours.  That just doesn’t seem like much fun to me.  However, the annual Floral Park Neighborhood Home Tour is coming up and some in Santa Ana are getting worked up over that.

But the O.C. Weekly’s Gustavo Arellano did some digging and guess what?  It turns out that Floral Park, which is where a gaggle of “Usual Suspects” live, including our Mayor, Miguel Pulido, has a racist history! Who would have guessed that?  Here is an excerpt from Gustavo’s post over at the O.C. Weekly’s Navel Gazing Blog:

In a January 8, 1925 article of the Santa Ana Register, mention is made of new “high class subdivisions” to be built in what was then merely referred to as the north part of SanTana. Among those originally buying in: future mayor F.L. Purinton and former O.C. district attorney L.A. West. According to the article, part of the deeds for these homes (in what would become Victoria Drive) stated “no persons other than members of the Caucasian race shall be permitted to use or occupy any lot, except as family servant.” That clause was in the deeds of many other SanTana neighborhoods, but Floral Park would become the place du jour for segregationists; among later residents would include former O.C. D.A. Horace Head, son of and apologist for Orange County part-founder and proud Klansman Henry. Ironically enough, Horace would go on to sell his house to Register publisher R.C. Hoiles, whose only worthwhile contribution to mankind was opposing Japanese internment during World War II. See, the Japs were fine in old man Hoiles’ mind, not the Mexicans. Read more…
