This disturbing dispatch came over the transom from my friends in Derail The Sale. Please keep an eye open for these putative public servants! MISSING?! So, thought you should hear it from me first: Jose Solorio’s &Van Tran’s bill AB 1590 to stop the sale of the Fairgrounds got amended while going through the Appropriations Committee to the point where it became a useless bill, and its authors “let it die on the floor” and just watched, as dramatized for [...] Vern Nelson, Huntington Beach. I just want to get a few things straight here. Let me know when I’m done if I have anything wrong, because I write for a blog and I hate to get things wrong. Reggie and the Pot Stirrer have both been doing excellent work on this, and I’ve been feeling uninspired and busy with my concert, but I suppose since this is the #1 OC blog I owe you all a quick update on the Tainted Sale of our Fairgrounds. Selling off as much state property as possible to developers because “Extraordinary Times Require Extraordinary Measures.“ Characterizing the Orange County Fairgrounds as “A Very High Value, Centrally Located, In-Fill Development Opportunity.“ Threatening the City of Costa Mesa’s attempts to protect the Fair with zoning ordinances: “…if the City moves forward with the Specific Plan [...] This is good news – our two central-county Senators have decided to back Jose Solorio’s AB 1590 to Derail the Sale of our Fairgrounds, leaving only five more fence-straddling OC lawmakers for us to pester! You’ve probably already read about Governor Schwarzenegger’s rebuff of the Costa Mesa contingent who went up to Sacramento yesterday to get him to stop the sale of the Fairgrounds. Of course Arnold’s position of wanting to “keep the fair a fair” while still selling the property to the highest bidders, with inducements to develop it [...] What I’m trying to get across with these two images – the blizzard and the crazy fax machine – is pretty simple really: Since all our lawmakers’ offices are closed till Monday (and since the Tainted Sale of our Fairgrounds was conveniently scheduled in early January to make it most difficult for us to fight) [...] These are the FIVE state legislators who have been most helpful so far in stopping the Tainted Sale of our Fairgrounds. You will notice they are a bipartisan bunch; you’ll also notice they are all in the lower house – the Assembly. The Senators are proving tougher nuts to crack, and we really need to [...] As you may have read in yesterday’s Register, investor/developer Rick Julian contacted cigar-chomping courtier-columnist Frank Mickadeit to give him a big Christmas scoop: He is putting in a bid to buy our Fairgrounds! I’m going to be asking you to send some (free) faxes to some of our state senators and assemblymen again, but first I’ll lay a little news on you, let you know where we stand in the historic struggle to hang on to our Fairgrounds: The local papers have been filled lately with news of a Joint Powers Agreement (JPA) between the County and the City of Costa Mesa to purchase the OC Fairgrounds.
