Anaheim gets citywide Wi-Fi, Santa Ana gets a new city website

Santa Ana’s neighbor to the north, Anaheim, just announced that Earthlink will be setting up a citywide Wi-Fi network – whereas the best that the City of Santa Ana can come up with is a redesigned city website that does not offer residents the opportunity to search through past City Council minutes.

Anaheim residents and businesses will be able to access the Internet at high speed for $20 a month, and local schools and libraries will get a discount. Even better, Earthlink is picking up the cost for installing the system and is even paying for the right to build in public rights of way.

In Santa Ana, residents will not have a citywide network and they won’t even be able to research what there City Council has been up to. Will Santa Ana follow Anaheim’s lead and give Earthlink a call? Probably not. Now if Santa Ana City Manager Dave Ream could cut a deal similar to the one in China, where Google.com promised to filter out words like “liberty” and “freedom,” then perhaps we might one day see a citywide Wi-Fi network in the Orange County seat. Don’t hold your breath.
