Orange Juice blogger Vern Nelson is going to put on a piano concert this Sunday, June 13, 6PM, at the Huntington Beach Central Library — the Best One Yet, he says! Vern will be playing:
- Andrew Imbrie: SHORT STORY (1980) [Vern’s old composition teacher who died this year]
- JS Bach: Prelude & Fugue # 7 & 8 from the Well-Tempered Clavier Book 1
- Vern’s E-flat minor medley [Beach Boys’ Good Vibrations / Nino Rota’s Romeo and Juliet theme / Joe Jackson’s Steppin’ Out / Brubeck’s “Take Five (really by Brubeck’s sax player Paul Desmond, and including a little of Lalo Schiffrin’s Mission Impossible theme)]
- Chopin: Nocturne in B Major, Polonaise in A-flat Major
- BRAZIL (new arrangement)
– intermission – - Beethoven: WALDSTEIN SONATA
- John Coltrane: Naima (new arrangement)
- Pink Floyd: ECHOES (1971)
The Huntington Beach Central Library is located at 7111 Talbert Avenue., in Huntington Beach.
Also, Vern is playing Friday and Saturday nights at Baci Italian Restaurant again! Except not THIS Saturday night! So if you can’t make it to his concert Sunday, at least come Friday to Baci. It’s on Beach Blvd. in Huntington Beach between Ellis and Garfield, next door to the IHOP, call first (714) 965-1194.
Vern says he hopes to see you all soon!
Hey Vern,
When are you going to debut “Dueling Bloggers”?
π
Vern.
Will you be playing “the parties over” on behalf of some local or national politicians?
You are not supposed to mix politics and music, or are you?
“Boogie Woogie”? Nay…probably something more
for Sarah…like that Barret Strong hit?
Who the hell is Barret Strong? Of course Bumblebee Boogie is one of my frequent encores – from back in the 40’s, when the Winships were only 60-something. They still can’t tell me and Sarah apart, since we’re both such amazingly young whippersnappers at 48 and 29.
I’ll mix politics and music if Larry and Carl come, I do whatever I want! I was avoiding doing my Debbie Cook song at non-political events, but it turns out even Republicans love it.
I’m not sure if we’re always gonna be Duelling Bloggers, Carl, I think a lot of things are coming up this year that we’ll be agreeing on – like Prop 11 for fair redistricting, and (I think) the anti-gay marriage initiative. You’ve heard of the “Strange Bedfellows” alliance hitting the Democrats on FISA, an alliance between Ron Paul libertarians, the ACLU, and hardcore liberal bloggers like Glenn Greenwald and FireDogLake? Not all of the outrages going down these days translate into left-vs-right any more.
I had no idea that vern was so talented! π
Anon.
Please. Next I will need to buy him a bigger hat.
Vern.
As your computer is newer than mine, you should have found the answer faster that this reply.
“Money (That’s What I Want)” is a 1959 hit single by Barrett Strong for the Tamla label, distributed by Anna Records. The song was written by Tamla founder Berry Gordy and Janie Bradford, and would become the first hit record for Gordy’s Motown flagship label.
I love that music “Ally Cat” that was from the 40’s/50’s.
π
FIXED the address in this post. Don’t go to Main St., that’s some old little branch (still called Main because it’s on Main St.) The central library’s on Goldenwest where Talbert would hit it. Inside Huntington Central Park. If you’re coming down Talbert from Beach or the 405, Talbert leads right into the parking lot.
Hey Vern, no doubt you’re right.
I just thought it was a good idea for a song…
R&A #2 –
I know ‘Boogie Wonderland’ by Earth, Wind, and Fire. I know ‘Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy From Company B.’ I don’t know ‘Boogie Woogie.’
I listen to pretty much all music from the Beatles onward (plus 40’s Swing) and have DJ’ed in Boston since I was 17. In fact, I’m trying to get back into the business out here. I may only be 29, but I’m the worst kind of history buff there is, so please don’t underestimate my knowledge of things that occurred before my time… or my wisdom.
No, you know something. Nevermind. Keep on doing what you’re doing and proving that your level of maturity is lower than that of someone under 30. I like I that option better. It means I can just ignore you. π
Please be sure and toast a Cosmo or two in my name. Thanks!

But wait ’til you hear “Echoes”! It is the best! And the Waldstein Sonata is dexterity and testosterone at full-throttle through my anal ring! Wish I could be there to hear it; those who will will be undoubtedly entertained and impressed by Vern’s talent!
Sergei Rachmaninoff and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky!
Humm a few bars and we might remember it!
