On a recent blog thread entitled, So much for the blog coup – the Orange Juice is now ranked the #1 political blog in California! , a poster named Oi commented about the three types of posters that s/he sees visiting the Orange Juice! blog. Post #7, Oi says –
I’m going to assume on the face that OJ gets the most traffic out of all of the other blogs.
But this does not mean it is the most influential. You can’t judge influence by traffic alone.
I think there are three kinds of people who read this blog.
1) Those who come here for the comedy. This is the largest category (and is where I fall).
2) Those who are checking to see what (if anything) Art and his posse are saying about them this week. This is the next largest group.
3) The mentally deranged. This is the smallest group. They think that this blog actually means something. Some of them think that this blog is worth fighting over. This group thinks that everyone in group #1 is deranged and that everyone in group #2 is corrupt.
You add all of these groups together, and you get the most traffic. But it’s hardly relevant.

Well, that’s pretty intuitive for a “new” Poster as far as insights, but at least s/he is letting everyone know that the OJ! comedy is the personal draw. What does everyone else come to the OrangeJuice! blog for? This might be a good opportunity for you long-time lurkers to give yourself a pseudonym , take this occasion to de-lurk and weigh in on the subject of why you visit!
Personally, I like the local interest and the varied subjects of interest.
Art, Why did you start this blog? What did you think would happen? Do you have a favorite story that was told here?
Red,
Great question. I began it back in 2003, after I had already been emailing a political newsletter for a couple of years. I was a GOP activist.
Now, the blog has evolved from one guy being a red party hack to whatever it is the Orange Juice is now.
My favorite story was what happened when Al Amezcua’s ex-wife found my “Who is Al Amezcua” post. She was living in Montana, but she found the OJ and she roasted Al but good. It was a classic Orange Juice moment…
My vote is for Comedy: the sand-box politics, Key-Stone Cops er Sheriffs, Red-Diaper reactionaries, store-front church attending American Taliban, laughable but lovable libertAryan brand of the big C found only in the Big 0.
Comedy. And to monitor the Pedroza gossip. Want to make sure no one I know is the subject.
The blog drama between you and SMS could be the best battle between the two most irrelevant people in politics.
Its like watching the band kids in highschool fight over who is cooler. At the end of the day, it does not matter. You are both f’n losers.
How about those who actually love Santa Ana and want to know what’s going on? Of course, the comedy factor is always a draw.
Dear readers,
I am glad so many of you find the blog entertaining. I have always tried to bring humor to what I write. O.C. politicians take themselves far too seriously!
I read and enjoyed this blog for about a year as a lurker, then about a year as a commenter, and now I blog here! And I guess I always enjoyed the rough-and-tumble feel of it, the humor and the insults, along with my impression that Art, Thomas and Sean were holding their town’s powerful figures’ feet to the fire. I liked that even though they were a Republican, a Dem, and an independent, they seemed to be united against local corruption and unresponsive governance. And racism.
In Oi’s formulation, I probably fit in #3, the deranged.
I come here to read the funny gossip. I only take about 20% of what I read here seriously. It just entertaining gossip that is all.
Santa Ana its been my home town for 32 years of my life and 20 years of my work life. What happens in this city matter to me. Very good info on the city and its inner workings.
Also I come here because I think Vern is well….he is Vern and he said it best he is #3 and I think its grand jk Vern buddy.
I read this blog to see whats going on in santa ana and the greater OC.
And the content is very entertaining..
But to say that this blog is not all serious, well of course, but you can say that about any news source such as faux news.
i love any story where Art sticks his foot in “it”. Good For a Laugh and great for those election time glossy mailers
I come looking for the inside scoop of what is going on in OC politics and government. I have not found much in the way of “scoop”, instead find mostly a lot of what if’s, could it be’s and reporting what is allready in the press. Would like to see broader coverage – county government, other cities such as Tustin, Newport Beach, Rancho Santa Margarita, Fountain Valley, Seal Beach, etc. Seems this site has a way to go in terms of geographic coverage to be all encompasing of its name “Orange”. Still checking from time to time though. And I recognize it is what contributors make it – but you asked!
casual observer,
Please be sure to check out the first post by our newest blogger, OC Shadow. He has written a great recap of the recent election that touches on many cities in our county.
We are always looking for new bloggers and I do what I can to write about other cities too. One of my recent posts was about the Yorba Linda Water Department, and I also put up a new post this week about the OCTA bus fare increase.
Art.
There are 8 people in our office that read your blog. WE LOVE IT! Not just for the chisme and laughs, but because you expose all the rotten things that are happening in Santa Ana. Your blog has made City Hall officials and employees shake at the knees and cry like babies.
All of us have a tie to Santa Ana, either as residents or have family that still reside there. Some of our families won’t leave because they still believe the city will clean up and have a better image. Personally, I think the city is spiraling downward and it’s image sucked 30 years ago and still sucks.
