The Left’s answer in dealing with the immigration issue today is to devolve into identity politics. You can’t even discuss immigration without being told you are talking about Hispanics, and everything you say means you are talking ONLY about Hispanics. From now on, turn it around. SInce Immigrants are critical to the countrys long term health, you would think that Leftists who profess to care about this country would want to fix the systemic problems. But instead of addressing the plight of educated immigrants who want to work here, the Democrats can only come up with their old stand-bys of matricular consular and alien drivers licenses. Band aid on the breach in the dam. A sad and pathetic attempt to sound like you care while doing nothing.
Of course, those are Indian and Chinese demographics, so they are not nearly as frightening to the Democratic statesman. They follow the rules, apply for work visas, can provide educated employment that will create other jobs, and provide a boost to the American economy. The Democrat only cares about you, apparently, when you break the rules, become a criminal or a victim, and dont bother to include yourself in the American culture.
More than 1 million skilled workers have been left in “immigration limbo” without being processed for more than two years. These are the kinds of people that have started 52% of Silicon Valley’s technology companies and contributed to more than 25% of our global patents. They make up 24% of the U.S. science and engineering workforce holding bachelor’s degrees and 47% of science and engineering workers who have PhDs. Immigrants have co-founded firms such as Google (NasdaqGS:GOOG – News), Intel (NasdaqGS:INTC – News), eBay (NasdaqGS:EBAY – News), and Yahoo! (NasdaqGS:YHOO – News).
The vast majority of these returnees were relatively young. The average age was 30 for Indian returnees, and 33 for Chinese. They were highly educated, with degrees in management, technology, or science. Fifty-one percent of the Chinese held master’s degrees and 41% had PhDs. Sixty-six percent of the Indians held a master’s and 12.1% had PhDs. They were at very top of the educational distribution for these highly educated immigrant groups — precisely the kind of people who make the greatest contribution to the U.S. economy and to business and job growth.
And precisely the LAST people that those who profess to “defend” against immigration reform are concerned about.
And in case you think those people are following the “normal” immigration pattern, where many who come eventually return home (and that is what a majority of immigrants have done in this country for 250 years). It isn’t all rosy back home. Indians complained of traffic and congestion, lack of infrastructure, excessive bureaucracy, and pollution. Chinese complained of pollution, reverse culture shock, inferior education for children, frustration with government bureaucracy, and the quality of health care.
So while we turn those people away with nary a shrug:

I listen to NPR, I don’t read it. If words are coming out of your radio like little subtitles, you probably need to get checked for that.

#6: Terry: The only thing that is “in limbo” for these people is their Greencard.
They are legal while their Greencards are in processing. Granted, there is a big backlog for processing Greencards for them, since there is an annual quota, and only 7.5% of the annual quota can go to applicants from any one country.
But, when talking about that, it were the Republicans in Congress who blocked the Comprehensive Immigration Reform which would have improved the situation. The Democrats supported it.
So, once again, you are trying to gloss over the failure of the Reeps to try and make a cheap post.
And once again, you are failing because some people like me, active in the employment-based immigration scene (I came into this country through employment sponsorship), actually know this topic better than you ever will.
