Immigration activists “are devising a proposal in which millions of undocumented workers would be legalized now, while the number of foreign workers allowed to enter the country would be examined by a new independent commission, and probably reduced,” according to the L.A. Times.
Here are a few more excerpts regarding the immigration proposal being considered by President Obama, from the L.A. Times:
Any new legalization plan is likely to look similar in some respects to the bill crafted by McCain and Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.), which stalled most recently in 2007. Opponents had decried the measure as “amnesty,” but it would have required undocumented workers to pay a fine and back taxes and to wait longer than other applicants for permanent residency status.
The new proposal, as laid out by several participants in the behind-the-scenes negotiations, would also create an independent commission that would assess labor and industry data to decide how many foreign workers should be allowed into the country. The system, designed by Ray Marshall, a Labor secretary under President Carter, would replace a maze of special temporary worker visas that are granted each year to high-tech specialists, agriculture workers and other foreigners brought into the U.S. by foreign and domestic firms.
Advocates said they planned to remind House members and senators that Latino voters, who supported Democrats in big numbers in the 2006 and 2008 elections and proved crucial to Obama’s victories in Florida and the Southwest, are expecting the party to use its enhanced power to pass a legalization plan.
If Obama doesn’t move on this quickly he is going to antogonize Latino voters – and mid-term Congressional elections are coming up in two years. I am sure the Democrats will want the new citizens to vote for them. Obama should ignore the critics and get this done ASAP! It will also serve to boost our economy as all of these new citizens will have to pay fines and back-taxes and they will be able to start opening bank accounts, getting credit cards and buying cars and homes. This could be huge for the U.S. economy!
here we go again no no no no amnesty get in line with everyone else . immigration reform – another word the activist use meaning let the illegals in YOU DO NOT REWARD LAW BREAKERS
This will only encourage MORE illegal immigration. Not to mention anger Americans who are out of work. As far as helping the economy are you crazy? Many illegals contributed to the economic disaster by getting subprime loans illegally. Don’t forget the 13 billion that illegals cost the State of California each year.
Just visit the ST.Josephs emergency room in Orange as I did on a recent nite. For every english speaking American without a child with them there were at least 10 Spanish speaking Adults with babies and small children. I found it odd that none of them looked sick or had a visable injury as my daughter did with a cut to her forehead.
This is the only sensible approach.
#2: illegals avoid hospitals and emergency rooms, for fear of being picked up by the authorities. So, the claim that illegals are the cause for rising health care costs is just ridiculous.
And what language somebody speaks has nothing to do with being legal or illegal.
“get in line with everyone else”
This is a popular phrase that assumes illegals are too stupid to know there aren’t any lines for unskilled workers or those without relative here already.
And Cubans won’t get in a line as all they have to do is jump over our border line.
The only lines are for skilled workers waiting to take the jobs of American workers as soon as their H1B visas are approved. And there are plenty of Placement firms pitching your employer on how you can be replaced with legal immigrants – those are the one’s to be watchout for – not the illegals picking crops – most workers can compete with them.
cuba has a different law . they are escaping from commis , unlike mexico who encourges there people to leave . cuba keeps them there by force . if you try to escape from mexico , they give you water, a handbook , what to say if you get caught , if you try to leave cuba and get caught its asta la vista baby for you .welcome to your new home . your jail cell . BIG DIFFERENCE .
Art,
The plight of undocumented immigrants, while troubling and tragic, shold not take prioroty over helping our own natural born citizens first.
The immigrants in this country, be they legal or illegal, documented or undocumented, should not be placed in any line ahead of natural born citizens. That includes any legal immigrant from any country. Not just Mexicans or latinos ok. I dont buy intop the whole arguement that undocumented immigrants from Mexico are the cause of every problem from economic strife to bad cell phone reception.
But I also dont think any Immigrant should get help from our government beofre Natural Born Americans do.
More shilling for democrats again.
Obama cant and wont antagonize American citizens and the Democrats will pay the price. As always they stand on the wrong side of the issue.
Illegal immigration is NO BUENO to Libertarianism.
STOP MINORITY FASCISM.
FOLLOW THE LAW.
This sounds like a very short term solution similar to the Reagan amnesty that improperly rewards people for breaking the law, and then sets time bombs for the future with unrealistic quotas.
We should have an immigration system that promotes economic responsibility and security and limits the access of recent immigrants to social-insurance brands of welfare.
Instead we appease the labor vote and trade restrictionists with unrealistic policies that at least on paper would create labor shortages but in practice result in an immigration ‘system’ that filters out anyone not desperate enough to break the law leading to a black-market economy with de facto amnesty such as we deal with now — made worse by muddle-brained welfare systems that creates benefits for only the foreigners who have snuck into the country.
There is no need to demonize Mexicans or treat this in a maudlin way like some sort of military operation. We need to change the system and stop blaming the people who have predictably responded to the mixed signals and incentives that are built into a system that they did not design.
No one is advocating that this issue take precedence over what is near and dear to your heart, what ever the issue may be. It is about not just ignoring a problem, it is about trying to bring resolution to the fact that if you have children that went to school in the United States, they probably were friends with atleast one student that was undocumented. Don’t those children deserve an opportunity to pursue their dreams?
It’s about common sense. People clearly immigrate here because of economic and/or social distress. Don’t know if any of you are religious, but in my faith, we are not about turning your back on those who are struggling to help their families.
illegals themselves can’t agree on the issue of illegal immigration. I have friends that were illegal(all from Mexico) that became legal either thru marriage or using an immigration attorney, etc. Most of them are against illegal immigration and think it is wrong and that we should not grant amnesty. Mostly because these former illegals didn’t take handouts but did see all the other illegals they have associated with who do take numerous forms of handouts and are living very well.
I have a smaller percentage of former illegal friends that think it is ok because they are just trying to get a better life and they are not criminals although at the same time believe that Countries have the right to protect their borders. (By the way, for the religious, the Pope believes this too that Countries do have the right to protect their borders as well from illegals.) I guess she has a guilty conscious.
The fact is they are criminals. And the vast majority are NOT farm workers. More then 50% are employed by local homeowners for a variety of jobs such as housecleaning, gardening, nannies, construction, etc. All paid with cash. And trust me they are not stuggling. They are very well dressed, have their cell phones, nice cars, etc. Because unlike the rest of us. They get their healthcare for free, food stamps, cash aid, etc. The list is endless.
That is what upset my illegal friends because they were offered all of this and turned it down. Although my friends weren’t making babies and didn’t need it either since they were live in nannies and got everything for free from their employer and stashed their cash under the mattress which they used years later to buy big homes with. Probably subprime loans, I don’t know.
It is such B.S. even legal immigrants that I have worked with that are the grandparents that were brought over with their sons and daughters that have really good jobs, drive Mercedes and their grandparents work minimum wage jobs and tell me they just have to do this for 5 years and then they get a government check.
They are just robbing from us the taxpayer. Why don’t all of us law abiding taxpayers just bend over?
I wish someone would help us. I fell in love with a hard working illegal Mexican and we are married, renting, and have a 10 month old beautiful baby boy. My wonderful, caring, faithful husband has never done anything wrong other than come to America without papers because he could not afford to get help from his country to send him over with papers. So at 17 yrs old he came illegaly and has worked harder than anyone I know to make something of his life. Well he was blessed with a loving wife and baby boy. I just wish there were something we could do for him to become legal. Marriage does not work these days. Paying some fat pocket lawyer might work after thousands of dollars, 10 years, maybe but its no guarantee. I don’t know what the government should do, but there should be some sort of system to help us!
