Is Carlos Bustamante turning blue?

I was surprised when I heard that Santa Ana Councilman Carlos Bustamante actually voted to support the Dream Act.  I did not expect that at all.  Bustamante is a Republican and the Dream Act is kryptonite to most Republicans.

Bustamante also supported Card Check earlier this year, which is absolutely hated by the Republicans. It would allow unions to expand more readily into new workplaces.

So what is up with Bustamante?  Is he turning blue?

I suspect that Bustamante realizes that the GOP has given up on him.  And he cannot win as a Republican locally if he aspires to higher office.

With Obama in the White House and the Democrats in full control of the U.S. Congress and the California State Legislature the writing is on the wall.  Bustamante’s only hope is to become a Democrat.

He is no friend to the working poor or to Latinos in general, but neither is Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido nor Garden Grove City Councilman Bruce Broadwater. Yet they each have full support from the DPOC.  Bustamante will too and he knows it.

I expect Bustamante to go blue this year.
