The Santa Ana “City Council voted 5-0 this week to support the federal D.R.E.A.M. Act, which would also clear the way for undocumented students to get federal loans for their education. The name of the act stands for “Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors,” according to the O.C. Register.
The DREAM Act would allow students who are here illegally to apply for legal permanent resident status, protect them from deportation and make them eligible for student loans and federal work study programs.
Why would anyone oppose any of that? How sad. Republican Congressmen Ed Royce and John Campbell this week voted to spend over $700 million to save wild horses, but they oppose the Dream Act. Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez does support the Dream Act.
Santa Ana Councilwoman Michele Martinez put this item on the Council agenda. That certainly won’t ingratiate her to the Usual Suspects… Kudos to Martinez and her fellow Council Members for doing the right thing for so many of the young people in our city.
haaaaa what crok art brings this up to get more hits because we where talking about it on the wild illegal alien horses section . how sad is it that people like you support illegals over american citizens .sad is the council voting 5-0 but then again this is the home of the illegas s.a . i bet if you put this on a national vote it gets killed . I LIKE THE WAY YOU PUT IT . STUDENTS WHO ARE HERE ILLEGALLY TO APPLY FOR PERMANENT RESIDENT TO PROTECT THEM FROM DEPORTATION . how silly does that sound. break the law and get away with it . how sad is that .
BLAH – BLAH – BLAH !!!! HOW ABOUT YOU SOLVE THE CRIME ISSUE NSTEAD OF THIS B-S !!! STOP SUPPORTING WELFARE PEOPLE !!!
5 to 0 vote? – seven council members
I would bet dollars to donuts that Carlos Bustamante did not attend this council meeting in order to avoid having to vote on this resolution.
#3,
I wonder if Pulido voted? Perhaps he and Busty took off to avoid the vote. It should have been 7-0.
Art, can the Santa Ana City Council have any influence whatsoever on passage of this proposal?
I am not for the dream act.
Jill,
We are talking about student loans, not handouts. Many of these kids have grown up here. Some don’t even speak their native language anymore. They are Americans in every sense except without documentation.
They can join the army. They can die for this country. Historically, many of them have done exactly that.
They just want a chance to succeed. I don’t see what is the harm in that.
SAHS Teacher,
It is symbolic. I don’t know whom it might sway.
But for once the Council Members showed that they had some cojones.
Except for the two who did not vote. My guess is that would be Pulido and Bustamante.
I understand what you are saying, but California has been far too generous and it is because of their generosity that I am out of a job. I think we have to draw the line somewhere. Illegal means illegal and if we offer exceptions than that is one reason of many that California is broke and I am out of a job (too generous), but I would like to see them succeed, just not on our dollar.

I agree with her !!!!
Art, there are btw 12 to 20 million “ILLEGALS” here in the USA sucking us dry. This is noting new, three President in the past rounded them up and sent them home for the same reason. The last being IKE in the 50’s under the “WETBACK” bill. Yes that is what it was called. Call it what you want now, today, but do it for its long over due. We can not support ourself let alone the rest of the world. And before you start yelling race bashing that means “ALL ILLEGALS”
#11,
The Roman Empire also used slave labor. Didn’t work out too well for them.
This act provides LOANS to students, not handouts.
loans to ILLEGAL students left out the key word again .
I am tired of government control. With Obama’s new healthcare plan, people who go out and work for a living will be taxed by 55 percent. I am single/zero (meaning no husband or kids) by choice yet I am punished and paying for other peoples’ kids. I make $92,000 a year and out of that $92,000 (school salary) + what I make on my websites, I am really making half of that. I am to the point that I don’t even want to work anymore. Maybe we should all consider working under the table as sad and “unamerican” as that may sound, but enough is enough. I am tired of paying for illegal immigrants (I don’t care what race they are) I am NOT a racist…I am going broke trying to pay for them. It is not only the illegal immigrants, but the millions of people who have kids, but have no business having them in the first place. I love all people and races. I just don’t want to pay for them anymore. Maybe I should take all of my money out of the bank as well, work under the table and let the government fend for themselves. Sick of it. Sorry…a little off the subject, but it does have to do with the budget 🙂 Lastly, California’s generosity has taken it’s toll on CA and as a teacher, I have lost my job due to the state’s economic situation. Forgive me (right now) for not feeling very generous. Illegal means illegal. If I went to China… will they give me a loan, free health care etc? I think not (they’re too smart and rich to do that) and that’s why America has to BORROW money from THEM. China is thinking twice about it (lending money to America), in fact. My prediction: China is slowly (but surely) taking over Mexico in a roundabout way…just watch…it WILL happen. They are buying property there left and right…give it time.
jill good post the word illegal wich art has a VERY HARD TIME UNDERSTANDING .
#15,
I guess you are having English comprehension problems again. There are NO handouts in the Dream Act. It involves loans to students – that they have to repay.
I am for them applying for residency and permanent status in America then we can loan them money, but I am not for loaning anything until they are legal and permanent citizens who are not skipping to the front of the line. They must go through the proper channels first (which is a mess). Then, I wish them all the luck in the world. It would be like me moving to Russia. I wouldn’t expect to move to the front of the line or get a loan from them until I was a legal citizen (which could take some time), but that is how things work…nothing comes easy. I understand that we mustn’t punish the children or youth for parental mistakes (not coming here legally in the first place), but we have to stop, draw the line and say, “if we had the money to do this…then yes, let’s do it…but we don’t right now…so please get in line” (unfortunately) as harsh as it seems…life is NOT always fair and compassionate. We must stop enabling and teach others that there will be TOUGH times and this is one of them.
haaa illegals who pay back loans . i will borrow tons of money and then go back to mexico because know one knows who i am . then come back in under a different name . makes total sense art , again can you comprehen the word ILLEGAL .
As an American/Mexican. American FIRST!!!!! I would pick and choose which students get the Dream Act benefits. Send those ignorant bald headed ESES!!! that do not want to learn somewhere else….
“Specialist”,
I am quite sure that the folks to whom you are referring probably have no desire to take advantage of the opportunity the “Dream Act” would offer them.
However, if they have the grades and desire to get in and succeed in college the door should be open.
Most of the “ese’s” as you have referred to them tend to be American born.
Most of the street gangs in Santa Ana tend to be made up of American born citizens.
I know of one, the Lopers, that gets its membership from the immigrant community.
The major gangs, such as F Troop, are made up of American born citizens. The “Dream Act” does not apply to them.
