Michael Vick has just signed with Philadelphia. He will be backing up Donovan McNabb. This is an example of what tragedies have occurred to the NFL recently. One guy shoots himself in the leg at a nightclub, one guy kills a person while driving drunk. These are examples, as to why many people are getting turned off to Professional Sports.
This begs the question….does talent in any sport mean that all the rules of conduct can be thrown out the window? When does conduct have a relative value? Not in politics? Not in Professional Sports? How about in Life? Bernie Madoff was a talented Con Man of biblical proportions. Should he have been forgiven for taking little old ladies false teeth and their retirement – just because he was talented?
The Philadelphia Eagles can now change their name: The Philadelphia Beagles! They can put up PETA Banners all around Lincoln Financial Field Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Ghosts of Chuck Bednarik, Bob Brown, Reggie White, Steve Van Buren, Tommy McDonald, Earle “Greasy” Neale, Pete Pihos, Sonny Jurgensen and Norm Van Brocklin. are turning over in their graves and away from their history in Philadelphia!
Michael Vick was convicted of creating and perpetuating a “Dog Fighting Compound”. Killing various animals and supervising the torture and ill treatment of others. He has served his time in Federal Prision for this offense, but every time we see Michael Vick….we will remember his indiscretions. What could he do to make up for this terrible behavior? Who knows? We just know that Donovan McNabb’s Mom and her Campbell’s Chucky chicken Soup will not make up for the hiring of Michael Vick..or bringing him back into the NFL!
To paraphrase the famous quote: “It’s hard to fly like an Eagle when you are surrounded by Beagles!” Michael Vick should have gone to Canada!
OK, wheres Sean Mill when an important subject comes up?
As the resident expert on NFL issues at OJ, I look forward to his imput (who else hads guested on Monday Night Live!)
Anyway, this is a good pick for the Big Green Machine, Vick can easily pick up fr Donovan, should something happen. The styles are similar.
I read on the inquirer blog, that before signing, Luurie insisted Stallworth be suspended for at least as long as Vick. He was rumored to say “when did a dog’s life become worth more than a pedestrians?”
Coincidence?
I know SF wanted him but would never pass the smell test there. Plus, the need to dump smith.
Time to forgive Michael and move on. He’s done his time, and he’s entitled to go out and make a living like the rest of us. Punishment doesn’t have to go on forever.
#1,
I personally think this was a great pick up by the Eagles. They now have the best back-up QB in the league and if they add the “Wildcat” formation to their offensive playbook, who better to run it than Mike Vick.
The Philadelphia fans will love Mike Vick if he produces and hate him if he does not. They could care less about his past, it’s all about the team present and future to them.
Personally I am glad to see Vick back in the league. He served his time and deserves a chance at redemption.
While dog fighting is horrific, so in my mind is hunting. How many NFL owners and players hunt? How many of these self-righteous media types kill defenseless animals for sport?
Good luck to Michael Vick…Except for when he plays my beloved Chargers on November 15th.
Excuse me Mr. Urban Californian…there are lots of people in the country that rely on hunting to subsidize their grocery bills. Hunting is not just for sport, and the meat you eat does not come in cellophane packages at birth. Eating meat is not evil – human beings have been doing so since we walked with a stoop. Other mammals will also eat US given the chance. Should we force lions to become vegetarians?
That being said…dog fighting caused by human beings is deplorable. When dogs fight in nature – there is a reason. When they fight to appease humans, it is disgusting. The people that condone it are less than human – they have no empathy or respect towards other living things. Sickening. I wish Michael Vick would have been blackballed to make him an example.
ocgrrl,
I am not talking about folks that hunt in order to put food on the table, I am talking about people who hunt for sport. People that shoot defenseless animals not to put food on their table for the families, but to mount their heads as a trophy on the walls of their homes and offices.
Those that hunt for sport are no different than those that partake in dog fighting or cock fighting. I find them all deplorable, but in my mind they are just different sides of the same coin.
It’s nice to see how forgiving everyone is when it comes to “sport”! How about electric prods up your wahzoo? How about starvation, lack of water and fluids, dismembering these poor animals, strectching their bodies over electrified fences, thrown into a pit and beaten with baseball bats…disfigured and tortured for “sport”?
Yeah, you guys forgive good old Mikey Vick….we will consider that conduct….below the pale! We will tell little Johnny…that when he grows up to be big and strong…he can act just like Beagle football player Mikey Vick…NOT!!! He can torture Snoopy when he is bored and bet on how long he will live…….and get away with it…..we don’t think so!
These professionals are suppose to be role models for our children. Way to teach our kids! He shouldn’t deserve to make that type of living, maybe he can get a job in the SPCA…
