Chapman Professor Tom Campbell has twice as much support as the fading Steve Poizner
GOP gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman appears to be rebounding from her mini-scandal regarding her voting record. She was endorsed yesterday by popular former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani. And a new article in today’s Sacramento Bee indicated that Whitman “was registered as a Republican voter in San Francisco in 1982 and also signed up to vote in Santa Clara County in 1999, according to previously undisclosed records.”
Even more good news for Whitman – a new Field Poll shows her garnering 20% of the vote, with Tom Campbell at about the same figure, while Steve Poizner is in last place at about 9% of the vote.
Over on the blue side of the aisle, former Governor and current State Attorney General Jerry Brown is absolutely trouncing San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom. “the former governor and Oakland mayor has support from 47 percent while Newsom wins 27 percent support in a poll question offering only those two Democratic choices,” according to the Sacramento Bee.
I guess Newsom’s current strategy of campaigning with the equally pervy Bill Clinton isn’t helping him much, to say the least.
The real surprise in the latest Field Poll is Tom Campbell’s continued success, despite not having much money or name I.D. The former Congressman and past budget director for Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is currently teaching at Chapman University, in Orange. Most experts figure he will drop like a rock when Whitman and Poizner start dumping their millions into the race. Whitman has in fact already started spending her money on campaign ads.
The really bad news for Republicans is that “The Field Poll found Brown easily beating any of the three GOP candidates among all registered voters, with Newsom winning by a smaller margin.”
There you go. The legacy of the Talibani Republicans that control both the California GOP and the Orange County GOP is that they have lost the electorate and cannot win at the state level anymore. Until they stop focusing on hating immigrants and gays, and stop bleating about social issues like abortion and gay marriage, the California Republican Party will continue to slide into the political boneyard.
