It’s Poizner versus Campbell at Brandman University on Oct. 28

Poizner versus Campbell

GOP gubernatorial candidates Steve Poizner and Tom Campbell will be facing off at Brandman University on Oct. 28

Social networking has been a big deal in California politics for some time, but Brandman University announced a new wrinkle today – a gubernatorial debate that was organized via Twitter.

The event is invitation only.  I received a few emails today inviting me to attend on behalf of the Orange Juice.  Apparently several local bloggers have been invited to cover the event and to blog during the debate.  Imagine if they seat me next to the hackish bloggers from Red County or Liberal OC?  I might not make it out alive!

The participants will be fading Republican candidate Steve Poizner, who is stuck at 9% in the latest polls, and surging moderate Republican Tom Campbell, who teaches at Chapman University, which is the parent of Brandman University.

I only wish that Meg Whitman was going to be there, but it should be fun watching Campbell run rings around Poizner, who is the California Insurance Commissioner.

If you want to get on the invite list, read on – here is the full press release for this event:

Brandman University Seeks Gubernatorial Debate Questions Via Twitter

Tom Campbell and Steve Poizner to respond to tweeted questions at debate on Oct. 28

Irvine, Calif. Oct. 16, 2009 – Brandman University, a fully-accredited university within the Chapman University system, is asking the general public to submit questions for their Oct. 28th California Republican Gubernatorial Debate between candidates Tom Campbell and Steve Poizner via Twitter . The debate topic is “Solutions to the California Financial Crisis” and those interested in posing questions to the candidates are encouraged to tweet questions through Twitter accounts using the hashtag #cadebate. The deadline for Twitter-submitted questions is Friday, Oct. 23, 2009. The debate will take place on Oct. 28, 2009 at Brandman University’s Irvine campus. Debate is not open to the public – special invite only.

Tweeted questions are asked to relate to California’s fiscal crisis. For example, one Twitter user asks, “What are you going to do to restore adequate funding to prison rehab programs and California service providers? #cadebate”. Another asks, “If CA treated juvenile offenders in adult court do you think we could save money and help our budget crisis? #cadebate”. See all questions.

Brandman University issued the debate invitation to candidates via Twitter back in August with Campbell and Poizner quickly tweeting their acceptance back. According to Dr. Michael Moodian, Assistant Professor of Social Science at Brandman University, the debate on Oct. 28th is believed to be the first political debate organized via Twitter.

Ed Arnold, co-host of KOCE’s “Real Orange” will moderate the debate. KOCE-TV will broadcast the debate live at 7 p.m. For more information, visit http://www.brandman.edu/debate.
