Thomas Sowell asks when will we wake up?

Today’s Register guest column by syndicated  columnist Thomas Sowell hits the nail on the head. The COLUMN headline reads. “When will we wake up?”

Before posting part of his observations it is important to share some of his credentials.  Thomas Sowell (born June 30, 1930), is an American economist, social commentator, and author of dozens of books. He often writes from an economically laissez-faire perspective. He is currently a senior fellow of the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. In 1990, he won the Francis Boyer Award, presented by the American Enterprise Institute. In 2002 he was awarded the National Humanities Medal for prolific scholarship melding history, economics, and political science. In 2003, he was awarded the Bradley Prize for intellectual achievement.

Mr. Sowell’s report opens stating “Just one year ago, would you have believed that an unelected government official, not even a cabinet member confirmed by the Senate but simply one of the many “czars” appointed by the president, could arbitrarily cut the pay of executives in private businesses by 50 percent or 90 percent?”

“Did you think that another “czar” would  be   talking about restricting talk radio?”

That there would be plans afloat to subsidize newspapers–that is, to create a situation where some newspapers survival would depend on the government liking what you publish?

Did you imagine that anyone would even be talking about having a panel of so-called “experts” deciding who could and could not get life-saving medical treatments?”

His column closes raising the challenge to each  of us.

“Whenever enough people will wake up in time to keep America from being dismantled, piece by piece, is another question–and the biggest question for this generation.”

I urge everyone to pick up a copy of today’s  OC Register. This is but a few of the opening paragraphs of Mr. Sowell’s analysis of our nation. Simply go to page 11 of the local section. When you are finished reading the Register forward this post to everyone on your email distribution so that they to get the message.
