Loretta Sanchez has a lot of junk in her purse, but she appears to be lacking in substance
Why won’t Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez support the DREAM ACT?
In July of this year, even the Santa Ana City Council, which hasn’t generally been friendly to immigrants, “voted 5-0 to back this symbolic resolution to support the bill in Congress that would provide a pathway to citizenship for undocumented students,” according to the Latino Politics blog.
This question has been pondered for some time. Here’s Gustavo Arellano’s take on Sanchez’ stance, “You’d figure Loretta–who owes her career to illegals, from the days of Hermandad Mexicana Nacional to Tan Nguyen and all those Latinos in her district who can now vote due to the 1986 amnesty–would be an obvious supporter of the bill. But to the student’s disappointment, Sanchez refused to co-sponsor the bipartisan bill while simultaneously claiming she’ll vote in favor of it if it ever reaches a House vote.”
Gustavo tackled the subject again this week, in a post wherein he mused that perhaps Sanchez had a few reasons for not supporting the DREAM Act. Here is an excerpt:
1. Loretta doesn’t need to sponsor any pro-immigrant bill, because she says she’ll vote on it: And if Loretta says the sky will be purple mañana, we should believe her? Promises and politicians don’t mix like, say, Tapatío and quesadillas, so mere assurances mean mierda. Besides, sponsoring a bill shows your commitment to its key issues, which leads to the second point…

And here is Change.org’s view of Sanchez’ hypocrisy, “Why is it so important that politicians like Rep. Sanchez sponsor the DREAM Act rather than get away with merely saying that they support it? Because not holding Rep. Loretta Sanchez accountable gives other non-Latino Democrats with less immigrant constituencies an excuse to not sponsor the bill. Words are simply not enough.”
And one more juicy excerpt from the Latino Politics blog, “If you go to Thomas.gov, you can see a list of the five bills Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez is sponsoring/co-sponsoring in the current congressional session. She is willing to lend her name and support to a House Resolution to designate September as “National Child Awareness Month,” but she stops short of co-sponsoring a substantive piece of legislation that could improve the lives of so many young people in her district.”
Check out how passionate Sanchez gets about Vietnamese human rights, in the video above. Yet she continues to give her own people the cold shoulder. Vendida…

if it stood for DeportRemoveEnforceArrestMoveout I’d be for dream act

You did not need to bother using that handle. It was pretty much a given that you were both white and male by the opinion expressed. However you left out the ignorant part. There are twelve million undocumented immigrants in this country. They work and pay taxes and without them the economy would go dead broke. Read and actual paper rather than the Aryan supremacist crap you been subscribing to and get the REAL picture.
Am I the only one who thought that when she held up that one item in the pouch and said “mint” that it was NOT a tea bag? I thought it would have been a nice teachable moment for other young women.
HA! Imagine the wagging tongues though.
That second video is pretty good. Why is she afraid to speak out that way for her own people? She doesn’t need to be.
HA!! another 150+ comments. 😉 this is gonna get good.
Maybe the Sanchez Team can use this as a self-improvement guide.
because most of us that were raised with parents that kept pointing to the Loretta Sanchez “example” as a latino pride and a latino role model- are soooooooooo very disappointed!!!!
Thanks again to Gus, Adriana, and now the OJ for speaking out! I had my own disappointment re: this Congresswoman.
But Adriana and Gus really made me say- “NO I will not continue to support Loretta simply because we were all proud of her at one point LONG LONG LONG AGO!!!
Latinos don’t blindly follow and Loretta is done with. She has been given so many opportunities to do what is right and expected of her and she is a big disappointment. She is taking up space, as are others like
Barbara Boxersaurus and Diane Feinsteinsaurus-Rex.
Hey! What’s your beef with B-Box?
I’m with Vern, what’s wrong with Barbara Boxer?
Every gal needs a “mint tea bag” in her purse. Just in case she gets stuck on an elevator with a lobbyist.
im with post 1 dream act stands for what you wrote .
It seems that in many instances leaders in the Hispanic community are Hispanic’s worst hurdle to overcome.
Many Hispanic leaders loose track of the big picture at the glee of those that wish to oppress them.
In terms of political sophistication Hispanics need to take lessons in solidarity from those that wish to limit the economic, educational and cultural development of Hispanics.
LET US EVOLVE IN THIS SENSE.
Sanchez said that she would vote for The Dream Act. She just won’t become the poster girl for it. Not everything revolves around illegal immigration.
Sanchez votes with the Democrats 97.6% of the time. Your lies will not stop her from winning re-election. She beat B-1 Bob and she will beat you liars too.

Re: “Thanks again to Gus, Adriana, and now the OJ for speaking out!”
These people post lies. They can’t substantiate any of their claims with facts or evidence. It’s all accusations and innuendo.
Who posted this? Not brave enough to let Loretta’s people know that your calling her out? chicccckkeeeensss!
#13,
That’s pretty funny coming from someone hiding behind nom de plume.

What is the message here? I don’t get it.
Doc, that’s the kind of message that pops up automatically when another blog post links to one of ours. You could click where it says “More Loretta etc.” if you wanna read that article.
Just got back from the dentist! You don’t do root canals do you?
Brother Vern.
Root canals? I thought that was your specialty. Hopefully you can wait until the Obama health care bill is signed and in effect so that you can get in line.
Sadly you could have had the state pay for it when you were on your recent VACATION!
On a new note. Hope you are booked for the rest of the year. It’s party time and I am not referring to Reeps or Dems. Juicers need to support one of our own.
Regards from Brother Larry
Thanks Vern.
Yes, I do root canals. I am in the book. Downtown Santa Ana.
There is an issue here between understanding and separating politics from activism. This confuses and damages the vision of the big picture.
Here are the other members of the Hispanic Caucus who are not co-sponsoring The Dream Act. One would think from the posts on this blog that Loretta Sanchez was the only one. Obviously this bill is a hot potato even within heavily Latino districts.

John T. Salazar (D-CO), Joe Baca (D-CA), Dennis Cardoza (D-CA), Jim Costa (D-CA), Henry Cuellar (D-TX), Ben Ray Luján (D-NM), Albio Sirez (D-NJ), and CHC Chairwoman Nydia Velasquez (D-NY).
Sunny, I hope those lawmakers’ constituents get on their case as well, as we are with Loretta. I know at least two of them – Baca and I THINK Cuellar – are useless rightwing Blue Dogs who backed Bush most of the time, and that’s sure not true about our dear Loretta.
Doc, I will call you. Larry, you are wrong about getting a root canal on my prison “vacation” – all they do there is PULL TEETH and give you MOTRIN! Apart from that, played for Art’s party Wednesday, Shawn Nelson’s party Thursday (where I got to meet the way cool Tony Bushala) and tomorrow night I’m playing at a pharmaceutical CEO’s birthday bash with Jerry Brown. Still got a few nights open though. (Remember that weenie who commented here the other day?)
brother vern.
happy to hear that you are keeping busy.
