At 1 p.m. today candidate for governor Steve Poizner made a campaign stop in Laguna Hills in south Orange County that was attended by over 100 supporters.
Villa Park council member Deborah Pauly served as the MC of this event. After she shared some of Steve’s plans for our recovery we listened to other elected officials discussing immigration and tax cuts.
After his 9 minute speech I asked the first question. Here is that exchange:
“Steve. I am Larry Gilbert and I put out “Larry’s Picks.” I have endorsed you in that. I’m getting a lot of heat on Prop 13 and split role. What is your position?”
“Yes. Thank you for asking because you know…Meg Whitman has distorted my record on so many different issues. On my web site www.stevepoizner.com you can get the truth on all her 50 million charges.
Let’s be clear on Prop 13. I believe in Prop 13 down to my bones. I’ll fight to the death for Prop 13. I believe Prop 13 is critical for homeowners predictability they need and those 2/3rds voter requirements for Prop 13 is essential.” This was followed by a standing ovation.
Another question from the audience that Steve tackled was on the subject of abortion.
“Let me just say I’m opposed to abortions. I want to work to drive the number of abortions down to zero. Over the last few years I have become honestly..more passionate about this. As governor I’ve decided to take a little bold step to drive down the number of abortions, and I will stop all government funding of abortions…all government funding.”
This was followed by another ovation.
“You all know that Meg Whitman and I have lots of differences. And one’s on government funding of abortions. She supports it.”
After his presentation Steve mingled with the supporters who then started working a phone bank.
After sending a copy to the campaign staff I just received an email indicating the number of attendees at 175.
While I guessed at the number, there were others in the hall while I was in the front row.
I would compromise and say my numbers were low but I doubt that 175 were there unless they arrived to work the phone bank after I left.
Sorry, but as a conservative
I would rather not engage in spin.
I like this idea, Larry! I’ll pay to see it. I don’t really want Steve to die though, we’ll need a referee to stop things just in time.
Who will he fight? We’ll need someone small – his size – someone willing to fight “to the death” to overturn Prop 13. i can’t think of someone off hand but maybe you can.
Then, what weapons will they use? We have a lot of planning to do, Juice Brother.
Vern.
I hope Meg doesn’t block me from shopping on E-Bay for my endorsement of Steve
At least 175 attended, as the room was very full, and more people were standing in the hallway because they couldn’t get into the room. I never saw Larry but heard the question he asked Steve.
It was certainly good to learn about Steve moving up in the polls. Meg’s campaign is stalling, despite stuffing everyone’s mailbox every day. The amount she’s spent is unreal.
Having Pauly as the MC is a bit odd, I guess the tie-in to the tea party gang was worth the divisiveness she brings.
What does “Fight to The Death” mean? I want no less than a statement from Steve Poizner that he will, no way, no how usurp Prop 13. Though I appreciate his statement, it does not unequivocally say that he will not overturn Prop 13. I am, frankly tired of the Ad’s… I want some straight answers, signed, sealed and delivered.
Teri.
While I try to convert Mr. Poizner’s remarks from my tape recorder into a blood oath, help me out and get Meg to justify her involvement in an eminent domain case in her, out of state, retreat in COLO.
Larry, Emeg does not respond to me, and never has. Poizner’s team does. That said, with this Prop 13 issue becoming such a huge question mark, I do not understand why the Commissioner does not simply issue a public statement. Property values in San Diego are highest in the Nation and, for now, on the rise. I cannot afford the property taxes I have. It IS an significant issue. As I understand it, this is the only reason the Howard Jarvis Taxpayer’s Association endorsed Emeg. Why does Team Poizner not simply sign a no messing with prop 13 proclamation and be done with it? Trust but Verify.
Teri.
I recently suggested that Mr. Poizner include a position on Prop 13 in their campaign.
Let me also say that in 1998 I testified for Tom McClintock in SAC on the topic of property rights.
Congressman Mc Clintock would NOT have endorsed Steve and put his reputation on the line if he had any doubts about Steve’s position on this issue.
Chiming in a bit late, but I do agree with Teri’s call for a signed pledge to protect Prop 13 from Poizner. I’m one of the vast pool of undecideds, and bet my house that most of us are perched to jump into the Poizner pool, if only he’d be clear and decisive on not raising property taxes.
I was all set to vote for Poisoner after hearing Tom MCClintock’s endorsement. But the Prop 13 issue has me worried. I don’t want to vote for Meg Whitman. I find her ads trite and unconvincing although her recent to the point statements about illegal immigration are moves in the right direction. But I’ll vote for her unless Poisoner signs some kind of guarantee that he will not support any move to weaken Prop 13. He’s got to clear the air here.
