Viet Democrats Gather For Phu Nguyen Sunday – and Dovinh/Dina news!

I hesitated on the newsworthiness of Sunday’s Fountain Valley fundraiser – after all, how big of a story is it that Vietnamese American Democrats would be supporting the charismatic Assembly candidate Phu Nguyen?  And, from working with his campaign, I know that his volunteers include many independents and Republicans, whites, Latinos and blacks, so I’m not interested in pigeonholing one of my favorite candidates as simply a “Vietnamese Democrat.”

But Art convinced me that, half a year after my seminal piece “OC Sea Change,”  that common wisdom still has the Vietnamese-American vote as Republican for the taking.  So, I suppose, the fact that more and more of our Viet brothers and sisters, disillusioned with the Fear and Greed Party, are turning en masse to the Party of Peace, Justice, and Human Rights, is still a sort of “Man Bites Dog Story.”

Oh shucks.  Wrong metaphor?  Damn.  Me and my Asperger’s Syndrome.  I’ll make it up to you:  Details on Phu’s fundraiser over the flip, AFTER EXCITING NEWS about the relationship between his “Democratic” primary challenger Joe Dovinh and longtime Republican Tran-acolyte GG councilwoman Dina Nguyen… CLICK NOW!

The rumors are true!  The big wedding feast is planned for two weeks from now, just as the primary is heating up.  We at the Orange Juice would like to wish the happy couple many years of marital bliss.  We realize how awkward this makes Joe’s primary run, already beset by rumors that he is a fake Democrat put up to running against Phu as a nuisance candidate by Dina’s mentor Van Tran, but true love has always overcome all obstacles!  (And at least this is less politically risky than Dovinh’s recently-divorced former wife, rumored to be the daughter of a high Vietnamese Communist official – especially given the suspiciously Communist single star in Joe’s banners.) But I digress.  A hearty congratulations to Joe and Dina!

Now, for the actual Democrats (and independents) who will be deciding this month which candidate goes on to fight the dangerous Allan Mansoor:
