“If voting ever changed anything, they’d make it illegal” – Emma Goldman
As author/lecturer Chris Hedges notes, the Liberal Class is dead. It’s the latest victim of a quickening corporate takeover of our politics. I vote mostly in the name of damage control – which the Liberal class is really not capable of these days, at least in terms of the magnitude of the crisis we face of which they have their hands soiled. And where there is no viable option in that estimation, I leave the ballot blank. Some of you may think the lesser of the two evils is the way to go. Sometimes, especially if there is a Republican hater so odious that they must be defeated, but not always. We keep lurching further center-right politically within the electoral spectrum anyway so that lesser evil is going to get pretty evil if we keep doing it! Voting Green or for Peace and Freedom within a corporate duopoly can also be understood as a protest vote in the NOTA spirit. Do so if you wish.
Therefore, I offer this voter’s guide/list as no guide at all. I’m not a political organization, just a citizen. If you really believe in a candidate, and think they will really change things, that’s your pedo! On the most rare occasion, there can be a confluence between your political conscious and what presents itself before you on that ballot. In any case, I encourage all of you who have read this blog and other places of political commentary to make up your own minds. If you find this an amusing read or even like my picks (and non-picks) God bless you! Just remember, pulling a lever every few years is only a slice of the rapidly decaying pizza pie of democracy. It ain’t the whole shebang. What I really encourage is democratic participation in your communities between elections (and even beyond candidates – certainly don’t be co-opted by them!)
For what it’s worth (and I’d never expect you to be copy & paste) I offer the following:
I endorse Duane Roberts for U.S. Senate.
California Governor: I recently read a passionate plea from a union organizer of government employees/service workers saying Nut Meg would be a disaster. She would. Jerry Brown looks comfortable enough in the polls, however, to vote Laura Wells if you want to. I will.
47th Congressional District: NOTA/Blanco
Anaheim Mayoral Race: NOTA/ Blanco
Santa Ana Mayoral Race: NOTA/Blanco
Anaheim City Council: I’ll probably vote for Bill Dalati and Dustin Apodaca. (This doesn’t mean I fully agree with their politics and vice versa shouldn’t be taken as such. If Apodaca wasn’t on the ballot as an ‘outsider’ who has lived all his life in Anaheim proper – go figure – I’d go Blanco)
Anaheim City School Board: Jose F. Moreno. I do believe in dual language immersion and culturally responsive education (and critical pedagogy — I don’t know if Dr. Moreno does, but 2 out of 3 ain’t bad) We need more than Moreno though. It takes more than one person and there is really no one like him on the AUHSD sadly.
Propositions are little tricksters aren’t they? I don’t really believe in Prop. 19 as it’s written – it’s flawed as hell – but better it symbolically represent an anti-prohibitionist sentiment before it’s crushed by the Feds than be defeated at the polls and be taken as the popular will of continued prohibition! (See how this voting thing goes?)
Therefore:
Prop 19: YES
Prop 20: YES
Prop 21: YES
Prop 22: NO
Prop 23: NO
Prop 24: YES
Prop 25: YES
Prop 26: NO
Prop 27: NO
The “NOTA/Blanco” is probably most stupid voting concept there is from which only incumbent and your opposition is gaining.
Ask Nativo Lopes who allegedly committed numerous felony to get extra one vote.
That is how much value a vote has.
Fiala is right, to a point. We should not waste our votes. We had plenty of options this year. I happily voted this year for Greens, Libertarians, Democrats and a few Independents.
Vote the person, not the party!
You’re right. We should not waste our votes! I agree. That’s why I don’t waste mine to perpetuate a waste of an electoral charade.
Hey Stan —
What if your position is voting for damage control? I suggest such. Also, there’s a demonstrated danger in putting your faith in a candidate and not a platform. We all to often see a person say candidate A) is better than candidate B) and then cease all criticism of candidate A)
I’m not interested in knighting candidates as “progressive” and turning off my analysis like a water faucet. I’m interested in holding to account ALL candidates to a progressive agenda and values.
BIG difference. DIFFERENT outcome.
The problem is Gabriel that you, same as a majority of voters, think that you must be a part of the winning teem, and therefore you are searching for the mister right.
That is not what a concept of the voting is all about.
Learn from Obama the messiah hysteria vote.
Your vote must represent your conscientiousness only!…. regadles who wins!
Otherwise, you must start making compromises like what is a lesser evil.
If your conscientiousness a.k.a. higher moral principles will allow you to vote for a lesser evil than go a head.
I do not vote for any evil no matter how little it may be! [emphasis added]
Simply giving a chance to any new comer is good vote rater than to vote for a person who you know is not up to your standards but is guarantied winner.
For example Brown is big evil for California he is the one who brought us public sector unions and see what happened. I will not be exited if he wins because the California is ungovernable and must be totally destroyed into Bankruptcy so all these pension and pay contract can be invalidated and unions restricted.
The Brown is the person who can do that!
Meg is liar and I will not vote for liars to oppose Brown.
There are others on the ballot…… but I will vote!
How is that I ‘must be part of a winning team’ while I mainly refrain from voting for politicians from the major two parties???
You will find the answer to that in Aesop’s Fables like The Fox and the Grapes there are others which may apply.

@ Gabriel SR:
You are absolutely right…we should never stop thinking critically of a candidate or incumbent even if it is “our guy or gal”! We must always hold them accountable and remind them of the privilege of serving.
Also unfortunately, in support of “our” candidate, supporters will tend to engage in the negative campaigning rather than focusing on the ideas of each candidate. Trying to discredit Candidate “A” does NOT tell me or the voters anything about the experience, values or Ideas of Candidate “B”.
All Tea Party voters and disenchanted Republicans should follow this guide.
It’s brilliant.
Go Duane!
I voted for Duane too!
I forgot one NOTA:
4th District Supervisor: NOTA
Governor write in canidates
A Chavez
N Smalley
C Lieurance
L Sherman
J Vangelisti
H Bagley
R Christian
R Millar
And let me just add this: the NOTA/Blanco political perspective is quite healthy in terms of the 4th estate of blogging. We’ve seen the decay of democratic dialogue proceed from close alignment with authority on all accounts.
NAME: CLINT WORTHINGTON AGE: 51
OCCUPATION: Locomotive Engineer
If I lived in SJC, I would vote for the engineer.
Aged cremated ashes from a corpse spread all over Aspen, CO is a better choice than NutMeg and Old Man Brown….yes I wrote in Hunter S. Thompson for governor.
I voted for Duane too…we need a real anti-war voice to help scale back the American Empire abroad
I will only comment on Irvine since I live there…I will not vote for any Irvine city council candidate until one has the cajones to introduce a bill that will repeal the ban of the sale and use of 4th of July fireworks and doing something about that barren wasteland that is called “The Great Park.” Until then, I will continue to write in the name of one person who actually put Irvine on the map: legendary Irvine High football coach and dear friend Terry Henigan, now retired from active coaching and teaching. The rest of the slate will be left “Blanco.”
You know where Prop 19 ranks on my list of voting priorities…”Very high” Prohibition has failed and we need a new direction. Although the proposed law is not perfect (I don’t believe a person should be limited to a 25 sq ft grow area), it’s a step in the right direction as opposed to spending billions of dollars on arresting and prosecuting non-violent offenses like drug possession and sales of drugs.
If you think marijuana should remian illegal under Federal law, I have this question to pose to you. Marijuana is listed near the bottom of the list when it comes to relative harms as opposed to alcohol which a recent British study deemed as the most dangerous drug. What aspect (characterstic) of marijuana justifies making it illegal and pursuing this failed Drug War policy?
