Supervisors in Los Angeles and Orange counties moved in sync Tuesday to ban medical marijuana dispensaries in unincorporated territories. The bans, affecting an area with 1.5 million people in L.A. County and 120,000 in Orange County, were approved in 4-1 votes in both counties, according to the L.A. Times.
Do these politicians realize who it is that needs medical marijuana?
The medical uses for marijuana have been know for some time now. Some estimate that marijuana has been used for medicinal purposes for 12,000 years now. In February of 1997, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) released a report detailing the possible medical uses for marijuana and most productive avenues for research. The report highlighted five areas of medical care that they felt were most appropriate. (Source).
- Stimulate appetite and alleviate cachexia.
- Control nausea and vomiting associated with cancer chemotherapy.
- Decrease intraocular pressure.
- Analgesia.
- Neurological and movement disorders.
My father died of stomach cancer. He wasted away before our eyes. In the end his brother, who is a nurse, administered an IV drip with painkillers, as he waited to die. Medical pot would have been of no use to him, as his own stomach turned against him.
But other cancer patients are able to make use of medical pot, to be more comfortable and to feel better.
Only one O.C. Supervisor voted against the measure to ban medical marijuana dispensaries in unincorporated areas. That was Supervisor Shawn Nelson, who is now the sole Libertarian-leaning Supervisor in Orange County. He said it would exacerbate the black market for the drug.
One L.A. Supervisor also voted no. That was Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky. “This is not some sort of scheme or scam. This is not some sort of joke,” Yaroslavsky said, noting that he had seen marijuana help friends afflicted with cancer.
Proposition 215 (or the Compassionate Use Act of 1996) is a California law concerning the use of medical cannabis. It was enacted, on November 5, 1996, by means of the initiative process, and passed with 5,382,915 (55.6%) votes in favor and 4,301,960 (44.4%) against.
This means that the majority of the Supervisors in both L.A. and Orange County have voted AGAINST the expressed will of the people.
O.C. Supervisor Bill Campbell terms out in two years. Supervisor Janet Nguyen is up for reelection in 2012. We cannot be rid of them soon enough.
And the writers from the FibOC won’t even bother to cover this. Instead, they go for hard hitting pieces like their editor’s experience with gastric bypass surgery and shill for Nguyen.
Much more respect now for Shawn Nelson.
Indeed. I was shocked by his vote. It is what I had hoped for but after he hired Dennis Bilodeau as his Chief of Staff, I feared he would abandon his Libertarian leanings. Not so!
Now we just have to get rid of Nguyen in two years…and thank God Campbell will already be packing his bags!
Good for Shawn, even though the measure is meaningless since there are so many other sources nearby to the small amount of “unincorporated” areas that haven’t been grabbed by the greedbag city councils that see their tax potential (witness Sunset Beach’s annexation by Huntington Beach).
Piss on Moorlach for his vote too — unfortunately there are four more years of him — then we can ask what he’s done for us lately — which will be nothing of consequence, importance or value.
Did Shawn just vote yes, or did he mount a full-throated defense of his position and attempt to convince some of the others? I hope, the latter.
This is a plus on Shawn’s ledger, and a minus on Campbell’s. But apart from this issue, Campbell has made more good votes than the others recently:
Only he and Moorlach voted to put John Williams in his place by separating the PA and PG jobs.
Only he and Janet (? for some reason?) voted for real lobbyist reform, and
He has been the most active in trying to stop the sale of our Fairgrounds – as you’ll see more dramatically very soon…
Vern, I watched it. He said dispensaries were part of Prop 215 and shouldn’t be banned.
The rest of them are featherheads or cowards. Or both.
I think they’re stick-up-the-butt moralists. Especially The Moorlach.
“moralists”………
Wrong comrade sub. Vern!
The Liberals are never moralists that is why they promote marriage between man and dog.
Liberals my friend are about the power! (emphases added)
This is power gesture and you are sooooo stupid that you even do not know your own ilk.
Do not worry you will enjoy your new 100% Liberal California.
The conservatives are for freedom and Liberals are for tyranny…… historically always.
Study the mother of them all Liberals – Adolf Hitler, vegetarian, nonsmoker, no alcohol, environmentalist and pro population control…… all your mantra.
Okay then, Moorlach, Janet, Bates and Campbell are all being LIBERALS by banning medicinal marijuana dispensaries. And Zev Yaruslovksy is a conservative. Got ya.
Good!
Do not let the party afiliation distruct you comrade sub. Vern.
You would not say that Schwarzenegger is conservative…… would you?
Labels don’t always fit real well. There are more than two types of people, more than two types of politicians.
More than anything else, on the most important matters, Schwarzenegger is a CORPORATIST. He will always side with what will make the biggest corporations happiest. An exception comes when there is a conflict between the growing Green Economy vs. Big Oil or utilities, he will sometimes side with the green economy, and I’m glad when he does that.
On social issues he’s somewhat liberal. But you can’t be all that liberal when your greatest allegiance is to big corporations and their profits.
I should say WAS. Arnold is almost history now. Go away Arnold. You can’t sell our Fairgrounds.
There is only one label called POWERIST as in POWERISM.
However there are many ways how to acquire the power. Mainly by way of FEAR!
Religion has HELL to scare you with.
Liberals have Global Warming
Conservatives have individualism and self reliance. (pretty scary to most)
The Government, as whole, has terrorists in pose to communists to scare you with after the end of the could war. You are so scared that you will allow them to search uniting and any were. Your rights are lesser than a slave has.
FYI, most of the corporations, Feds, Hollywood, judiciary (big money) is ruled by the Liberals and mostly Jews.
So here you have it green-ship-comrade-sub-Vern.
You’re right about Americans being manipulated by fear, but it’s the folks who call themselves “conservatives” these days who have ALL the fear cards:
MUSLIMS who will take over the country and make us all live under Sharia Law! (After first killing us all!)
MEXICANS who will take your jobs and force us all to speak Spanish!
GAYS who will turn us all gay, starting with your kids!
WOMEN who once they make a fair wage it’ll come out of YOUR wages!
MARIJUANA which will put you on the fast track to crack/heroin addiction, prostitution, and AIDS!
TAXING THE RICH & THE CORPORATIONS, which’ll mean they won’t give you a job, and just RIGHT when they were thinking of maybe finally doing that!
THE COMING APOCALYPTIC ECONOMIC MELTDOWN. Buy gold! Buy survivalist food packages! Worship Glenn Beck!
LIBERALS who are gonna help all the above happen!
“Conservative” dupes wake up in the morning VERY AFRAID, spend their whole day that way, and go to bed that way.
I believe that this blog does not covers the international events but it is scary out there now.

You should be more scared of socialism than anything folks.
I have read Stanislav that the Euro could be abandoned as Germany is not happy about this at all. That would be interesting. I believe they should not have allowed so many struggling economies into their cabal.
