“Long live freedom, down with occupation!” are the concluding words of Afghan dissident Malalai Joya as she marks a dark day for her country. The former Member of Parliament, human rights activist and author has been described as the “bravest woman in Afghanistan” by the BBC after she unabashedly spoke the truth at a 2003 Loya Jirga assembly riveting the world with her denunciations. Surviving multiple attempts on her life in the years that have followed, this videotaped message on the tenth anniversary of the US/NATO occupation of Afghanistan shows how uncompromised her words continue to be.
Just look at the “Arab Spring” to see what people can do on their own for their country and its obvious that our efforts in Afghanistan are a waste of lives and money.
She would have been a fitting co-recipient of today’s Nobel Peace Prize. Good point, Larry.
Exactly Larry. Look at Iraq and Afghanistan vs. Egypt and Libya.
Her ability to speak bravely is protected by the United States Armed Forces. It would not have been possible for her speak so bravely under the Taliban and Al Qeada.
Hell, she couldn’t have even shown her face under the Taliban – she would have been killed.
Nonsense. We are only fortunate that those who sought to kill her multiple times *during* the occupation were not so successful.
