One of many things we Californians can and will do over the next two dark years while we wait for the rest of the benighted nation to get its shit together: make some progress toward Immigration Reform! Assemblyman Gil Cedillo – [last seen in Orange County helping Phu Nguyen register new Latino voters in Costa Mesa and now ironically seated behind Allan Mansoor] – has introduced the “California Dream Act” – apparently the same measure Governor Brown was voicing support for on the campaign trail.
Wait – the big Federal DREAM Act was about granting a pathway to citizenship to good responsible students who are here and undocumented through no fault of their own – California can’t grant citizenship, can it? No, this DREAM Act seems to be about financial aid to undocumented kids. Oh, THAT’ll go over real well with a lot of OJ readers! I’d think the students would prefer citizenship, but anyway here’s Gil’s press release:

CEDILLO INTRODUCES CALIFORNIA DREAM ACT
WITH COALITION OF BUSINESS, EDUCATION AND LABOR LEADERS
The proposed law would grant qualifying undocumented college students access to financial aid from the University of California, California State University and Community Colleges.
LOS ANGELES – On Tuesday, January 11, Assemblymember Gilbert Cedillo (D-Los Angeles), will be introducing the California DREAM Act in the California State Assembly. The proposed law would grant qualifying undocumented college students access to institutional financial aid and Cal Grants from the University of California, California State University and Community Colleges.
The California DREAM Act, first introduced by Cedillo in 2006, will be introduced in two bills. The first bill would allow students that meet the in-state tuition requirements to apply for and receive specified financial aid administered by California’s public colleges and universities. The types of aid these students would be eligible for include: Board of Governors (BOG) Fee Waiver and Institutional Student Aid: Student aid program administered by the attending college or university (i.e. State University Grant, UC Grant). The second bill would allow students that meet the in-state tuition requirements to apply for and receive Cal Grants by California’s public colleges and universities.
If approved, California would be the third state to offer financial aid to undocumented students after Texas and New Mexico. [ha – the Texas you righties love to drool over – Z.]

xhit?
Pedroza would never allowed such language here, Zorro!
Ah… pero… quien es Zorro, Fiala? …… hmmmmmmmmm
I have an idea for a revised Dream Act. To qualify you would need to turn in your parent(s) for deportation.
That is not workable.
However, I would support if the parents would not be on the public assistance.
Since, I am pro open borders (lived 22 years behind the Iron Curtain), I would resolve this issue same as communist did in the old Czechoslovakia.
It was mandatory to have a job. If you did not have a job the government did find one for you. Usually some slave labor.
In other words we must legalize current status quo.
You are illegal you may stay but you have no same rights as a legal citizen.
That would be applicable to all persons who crossed border illegally in the age of 21.
great idea. since we have so much surplus cash available we should give it to…..ILLEGAL ALIENS !! Brilliant.
NO ITS CALIFORNIA NOT THE REST OF THE NATION THAT NEEDS TO GET THEIR ACT TOGETHER .. ONE BILL GIL , NO SE PUEDE , ILLEGAL MEANS NO , NO , NO ,
California’s going bankrupt, even faster than any other illegal alien saturated state, and this guy wants to hand out money, on cash-strapped UC and CSU campuses no less, to students who have no right even to be in the country.
Gil Cedillo: He’s not just about illegal alien drivers licenses anymore.
Dear Assemblyman,What the heck? We have a financial crisis and you can find grants for illegal immigrant students? Does the word illegal mean anything to you.
Do you realize that you are using the peoples money who voted for you .The state is in financial crisis because of such decisions and such decision makers
A wonderful dream has come through! You know, so many people who are from out of state, or who are the children of out of state persons, always complaining about Latinos. Wonderful California, with the Sierra Neveda’s, San Francisco, Monterey, Los Angeles, Sacramento, Santa Barbara, San Diego, El Camino Real, Altadena, Pasadena, Ventura, Fresno, San Jose, Figueroa St., Alameda, El Dorado, Mission Vallejo, etc, etc. Hey, I’m speaking Spanish! Now that’s what I’m talking about. God Bless Gil Cedillo, the Legislature and Governor Brown.
gil cedillo is a joke this guy does not represent americans . he represents mexico , he puts mexicans ahead of americans .. his district is so small he represents the iillegal aliens WHO CANT VOTE . he is always pushing for rights of illegals , cars towed , drivers lincense , car registraion , when is he going to put AMERICANS first .. he is total discrace .
The Grate One is going to stomp his little feet so hard that he falls through the floor like Rumplestilstkin – and all because of Cedillo and the DREAM Act!
VERN THEN I WILL JUMP FOR JOY WHEN WE THE PEOPLE REPEAL THIS STUPID LAW . IF THIS THING GOES TO THE VOTERS AND IT WILL ITS DREAM ON DREAM ACT .
Assemblyman Cedillo greetings:
I need to apologize to you, for being confused over the issue of which CA State politician did sign on with former Gov. Arnold Schwartzenegger in 2006, to kill
killed local community public access TV.
It was state Senator Favian Nunez, and how can I forget, since I was then producing a segment “Politics Matter”.
Again, I do apologize sir.
Thank you for your hard work. I left the Democratic Party some years ago, because as you know, the two political party system constitutes a dictatorship. So I registered with the Peace and Freedom Party, a Socialist platform extremely different than your Party.
Best.
Cordially,
Bella
