Your challenge this weekend, dear Orange County adventurers, will be not so much choosing between which ArtWalk to attend, as which one to attend FIRST. Here’s the 911 on Fullerton and Santa Ana both…
This is tonight and tomorrow night (Fri Aug 1 – Sat Aug 2) from 6pm to 10pm, at the Magoski Arts Colony, 223 W Santa Fe Ave, in Fullerton. Baxter writes us:
The Egan Gallery cordially invites you to enjoy big doses of “Sex Drugs & Rock “n’ Roll. In partnership with local musician, sound and lighting guru Roy ” El Roy ” Zartman, The Egan will be exhibiting the best of Roy’s 40+ year massive collection of all things Sex, Drugs and Rock ‘n’ Roll.
Roy attended Sunny Hills High School in the late 60s and since then he has never been too far away from stage. Roy is a musician himself but made a living first as a bouncer at The Golden Bear Huntington Beach, and later doing sound and lighting from small local clubs to mega concerts across the county.
Roy is a master sound engineer, production and lighting expert and has worked the So Cal concert and club circuit for four decades and he has seen it all. His credits look like a whos who record collection as seen at www.seefactory.com/
On display and for sale will be cult classic film posters, much of the promo material from San Francisco Psychedelic rock scene, as well as Roy’s own personal rock and punk material from the gigs he played and worked. Everything on display will be an original printing and everything will be for sale well below the collectable retail price.
The Egan Gallery will be transformed and Sex Drugs and Rock “n” Roll are on the menu. So come sober or come loaded, either way you will enjoy your trip.
Santa Ana
Meanwhile, this just came in from friend of the blog, activist, Santa Ana occupier and artist Matt Southgate, who was recently and controversially evicted from the Santora building:
Press Contact: Matt Southgate – 714.381.9136 – mattsouthgateart@sbcglobal.net
“A Tribute to Santa Ana” by Urban Realist Painter, Matthew Southgate will open THIS SATURDAY 8/2 during DTSA’s ArtWalk. Celebrate historic scenes & local movie legends from the “Golden City” such as Chaplin, Brando, Bebe Daniels and more!
“A Tribute to Santa Ana”
@ Diego’s Downtown
224 E. 3rd St, Santa Ana 92701
Opening from 6pm to Midnite
Southgate was taught painting by the legendary Emigdio Vasquez and also studied art at Santa Ana College. He’s been active in the Santa Ana arts scene for over 20 years, exhibiting at the Caged Chameleon Gallery in the 80’s, which DIEGO’S chef Richard Espinachio used to run, as well as in the Bowers Museum, OCCCA, and his infamous Studio del Sotano gallery in the historic Santora basement. A skilled muralist, portrait painter and sign-maker, Matt has also been active in local politics, advocating for Artists with the Artists Village Association of Santa Ana (AVASA) and United Artists of Santa Ana (UASA). His guiding vision has been to preserve the historic Santora Arts Building, Artists Village and DTSA as cultural hubs by providing Artists and Arts Businesses with the support needed so they can continue showcasing Santa Ana’s unique history.
Matt’s art is characterized by hyper-realistic urban portraits of Santa Ana locals, historic buildings and businesses. He also weaves nostalgic visual narratives of Santa Ana’s Vaudeville & Show Business Legends like Charlie Chaplin, Marlon Brando and Bebe Daniels. Similarly, his evocative portraits of street characters, the homeless and DTSA’s richly diverse immigrant community have won many prizes & accolades. Southgate currently works at the Bowers Kidseum where he teaches Art History & Painting to local youth.
Don’t miss THIS SATURDAY @ Diego’s for August ArtWalk. There will be food & drink specials all night!

Sad blast from the past – Matt’s old, celebrated, demolished studio in the basement of the Santora Building.
This is your weekend open thread. Talk about this, that, the other, and what tardy flakes artists are!
Interesting fact:
When I was a senior at Canyon High, I wore a tshirt that said Sex, Drugs and Rock n Roll (full disclosure: I was a straightedge virgin into pop music). I was asked to go remove the shirt, but teenage Daniel, of course, raised a big fuss about freedom of speech and so on so forth… blah blah blah. I was sent home. 🙁
It was an Ian Dury song in the early 80’s.
Record in 1976; released as a B-side in 1977
Ah, thanks! I guess I’m just thinking of the time in my life when I first heard it.
The Santa Ana Artists Village is imploding. http://newsantaana.com/2014/08/01/could-the-one-broadway-plaza-tower-save-the-dtsa-food-and-arts-scene/
Hey Art — since you’re here, maybe you can give your opinion about an ongoing discussion.
Do you think that:
(a) Dr. Jose F. Moreno benefits from voters confusing him (or even from greater name recognition deriving from knowing the name of) Jose “Joe” Moreno;
(b) that Jose “Joe” Moreno benefits from confusion or familiarity with the name of Dr. Jose F. Moreno;
(c) that both effects occur to about the same amount; or
(d) that voters neither confuse the two, or are more likely to vote for one based on familiarty with the name of the other, at all.
I believe that you’ve addressed this on your blog before a time or two, but asking you here is easier than sifting through that record.
Don’t bother Art. He’s too busy wishing for the failure of Downtown Santa Ana.
here is my unsolicited two-cents:
Would not hurt either or any Moreno because anyone drawing the connection to ARTE would accordingly differentiate the owner from the candidate. It could help a little, but I doubt it, apparently “Moreno” is a common and widely recognized name in any event; and definitely not as cool as say Lamb or Diamond.
Reminds ME of Jim. Hi Jim.
I’ve been meaning to start a petition, the proliferation of ‘Moreno’s threatens civilization.
Jose Moreno should change his name to Kris Murray. Problem. Solved.
the state is going to raise/fine the price of water dramatically.
Must be the reason the private desal plants have been held up for more than a decade.
NYT Op Ed – What the White House wants to do on immigration .. would be lawless, reckless, a leap into the antidemocratic dark.
And an American political class that lets this Rubicon be crossed without demurral will deserve to live with the consequences for the republic, in what remains of this presidency and in presidencies yet to come.

What’s that? Did someone say their weekend wouldn’t be complete, without yet another silly video? (Ducks, as thrown chair smashes against wall in background) Well, OK THEN!
