JOSH NEWMAN RESPONDS TO LING LING CHANG’S EGREGIOUSLY MISLEADING ATTACK ADS

Fullerton, CA – Josh Newman, candidate for the California State Senate, released the following statement in response to an attack ad being run on television by his opponent, Assemblymember Ling Ling Chang:

“Ling Ling Chang’s most recent television ad takes gross liberties with the truth and embodies pretty much everything that people detest about politics today. This particular ad represents a new low, even for someone with a well-documented history of purveying untruths about herself and exaggerating her thin record as a member of the Assembly.  Despite the massive amounts spent so far on her campaign to move up to the State Senate, Ling Ling has proven herself little more than a desperate politician with declining poll numbers.  It’s become all too clear at this point that she and her handlers are more than fine with saying or doing anything in order to get elected, even if that entails a reckless disregard for facts and the truth, and a convenient jettisoning of what most people would consider a minimum level of integrity and decency.”

The TV spot, which Chang’s campaign began airing last week, makes the false claim that during his time working for the Mayor of San Francisco in one of his first jobs following completion of his military service more than 20 years ago, Newman “stole the Mayor’s letterhead” and “stole confidential police records”.  In fact, Newman did no such thing, and there’s absolutely no basis in fact to substantiate either of these maliciously false assertions.  Both statements are completely untrue and constitute willful distortions of more complicated yet innocuous past events which even the most cursory level of due diligence would have shown (for a more complete explanation of the facts at issue, go to http://newmanforsenate.com/lies-etc/).
Aggressive attack mailers parroting the misleading claims of the Chang TV ad have also been sent to voters in recent days by the California Chamber of Commerce’s Political Action Committee as part of an ostensible “independent expenditure.”  In total, Chang’s campaign has benefited from more than $1 million in outside spending to date, much of which has directed toward defaming Newman’s character through a combination of political caricaturing, innuendo, and outright lies.

Paid for by Newman for Senate 2016 – ID# 1377779

(I left the “paid for” caption at the bottom even though we’re not getting paid for this just in case it’s required.)

I had received Chang’s mailer, asked Josh about it, and have been waiting for the time to write about it and several other massive (even by Dishonest Dave Gilliard standards) lies and distortions.  I’m amazed that they were able to get the ads pulled so quickly.  That’s how out of line Ling-Ling’s Lying has become!

There’s more to this story, which I believe you can find at the link in the press release, to which I’ll return soon.  If you have your vote-by-mail ballot and you’re not yet planning on marking it for Josh, PLEASE DO NOT SEAL THE ENVELOPE until you get a chance to read about why the garbage you’re getting about him in mailers and cable ads truly does belong in the trash.  If you’re not voting for him beforehand, you’ll be glad that you waited!

About Greg Diamond

Somewhat verbose attorney, semi-disabled and semi-retired, residing in northwest Brea. Occasionally ran for office against jerks who otherwise would have gonr unopposed. Got 45% of the vote against Bob Huff for State Senate in 2012; Josh Newman then won the seat in 2016. In 2014 became the first attorney to challenge OCDA Tony Rackauckas since 2002; Todd Spitzer then won that seat in 2018. Every time he's run against some rotten incumbent, the *next* person to challenge them wins! He's OK with that. Corrupt party hacks hate him. He's OK with that too. He does advise some local campaigns informally and (so far) without compensation. (If that last bit changes, he will declare the interest.) His daughter is a professional campaign treasurer. He doesn't usually know whom she and her firm represent. Whether they do so never influences his endorsements or coverage. (He does have his own strong opinions.) But when he does check campaign finance forms, he is often happily surprised to learn that good candidates he respects often DO hire her firm. (Maybe bad ones are scared off by his relationship with her, but they needn't be.)
