Orange County Supervisors have a lot on their plate. Homelessness, seemingly constant scandal at both the Sheriff and District Attorney’s Office, major collective bargaining reform for the county’s two largest public safety agencies, critical infrastructure decision points with OCTA and other agencies impacted within the county, all hanging on top of unincorporated land use issues. It’s a serious job with a serious budget. Getting a decision wrong at the County level means tens of millions of taxpayer dollars being wasted.
Tim Shaw is the best choice for 4th District Residents. He has a history of getting local government choices right, he’s honest, and he’s actually raising his family where he says he is. Moreover, Mr. Shaw built a coalition of support across party lines to get good done for residents across the county in the multiple special districts he serves, including a half dozen transit agencies and the Association of California Cities– Orange County. He’s well respected, not just because he’s congenial, but because he does exactly what he says he’ll do.
Mr. Shaw’s reputation and ability to build consensus is exactly what the 4th District needs. For those of you paying attention to the County’s budget and history, North Orange County receives a sharply lower proportion of county attention, dollars, and effort. If we’re ever going to see a return of parody to the county’s budget, Mr. Shaw is the right type of politician to restore fairness and equity to our district. Electing a self-serving politician will likely see the County send buses full of cash to maintain parks in the south, with those same buses filled with individuals experiencing homelessness on the return trip North. We deserve the same focus on quality of life as those living in Laguna Nigel, and we need a Supervisor who puts his neighbors ahead of his or her political career. We have at least two candidates running who absolutely will not.
This June’s Primary Election has quite a bit going on, particularly in North Orange County. In the last two months, my household has received 62 mailers for CA-39 alone. Aside from being ridiculous, it’s distracting from a serious race that actually matters to my family and my neighbors. In a race where we have one candidate who willfully is not telling the whole truth about where he lives and another who uses “It wasn’t in my campaign literature” as an excuse for repeatedly lying to voters, we need a candidate who is trustworthy, does the right thing at the right time, and who respects the integrity of public office. That’s clearly Tim Shaw.
Here are my rankings for June’s Primary Election for County Supervisors:
1. Tim Shaw. Does what he says, builds coalitions, acts responsibility towards his community.
2. Rose Espinoza. Established in D4. Not as responsible as Shaw with votes.
3. Doug Chaffee. Established in D4. Entirely self funded, can he build a coalition?
4. Cynthia Aguirre. Lacks a voting track record, likely unfit for collective bargaining.
—- THIS IS THE MINIMUM BAR FOR PUBLIC SERVICE —-
5. Kerr— Either doesn’t live in the district or left his family to run for office. Unacceptable
6. Kring— Wild flip-flopper with a strong record of doing the wrong thing. Unacceptable.
“Electing a self-serving politician will likely see the County send buses full of cash to maintain parks in the south, with those same buses filled with individuals experiencing homelessness on the return trip North.”
Now that’s funny.
Why would Kerr possibly do that? He’ll want to get re-elected in four years — from the 4th District. He’d have to bend over backwards to do his best to serve us well. And even though he wasn’t my first choice among Democrats, he’s admittedly the best equipped among Democrats to make those policy changes happen. I’d expect Shaw to do about as well as the departing incumbent — and the status quo is not exactly anything to brag about, in terms of either the district’s benefits or burdens.
Anyway, Zenger, I’m interested in your thoughts in the POAs’ Chaffee making the “you must be this tall” cut while Kerr did not. I don’t recall you being a fan.
Yes, why is Doug Chaffee above the line? He has all the charm and brilliance of a box of rocks with early signs of dementia.
And his base consists of Killer Cops, Poseidon and Chevron. Maybe Republicans can be thankful for his entering the race at the very last second as a 4th “Democrat.”
Read the VOC article about the race. He’s spent $150,000 on the race, that’s why he’s above the line.
Couldn’t be the reason. Ryan put Kring and Kerr beneath the line for reasons having nothing to do with how much their campaigns are spending.
And in his CA-39 piece he put … CISNEROS and THORBURN beneath the line!
Doug is above the line because he has 6 years of relateable experience as a local elected official and hasn’t done anything obviously evil. As noted, being entirely self funded isn’t good.
“The line” is really just intended to mean these people passed the class with at least a “D” grade or better.
For CA-39, Democrats are pushing forward two extremely wealthy candidates with ZERO relevant job experience and ZERO relevant record of community improvement activity at the expense of candidates who had both. Take away all that money being spent to promote their own vanity and you’ve got two candidates with “F” test scores.
Thus, below the line.
Hmmm…I will take this recommendation as the word of an ‘old hand’ and consider it in more detail: the mere fact I may disagree does not change my esteem. That said, I like this organizing device – name a few who seem legit, then specify “THIS IS THE MINIMUM BAR FOR PUBLIC SERVICE” – an effort to separate the wheat from the chaff based on objective standards.
Here, one of the objective standards is carpetbagging. Some around here consider that disqualifying. But what if the guy who carpetbagged has the positions you most agree with, and is perfectly well qualified otherwise?
I would have put Kerr above the bar, and Chaffee below based on things he’s done in Fullerton. Oh, and Cynthia Aguirre is the smartest and best qualified (well, maybe along with Tim but from a more left perspective) except she’s not running much of a campaign.)
I’m tired of being nice about the Bushala-Zenger mania about carpetbagging; it’s cut from the same emotional cloth as the people I grew up with in Huntington Beach who claimed that the beach was “OUR BEACH!”, the more asinine of who would try to back that up with violence.
If someone lack enough ties to a community, that will take care of itself. I’d rather vote for someone of good character who parachuted in from Maine but can and will represent my views in office than someone who thinks that having drunk the same water for half a century is some sort of qualification.
Knowledge of local issues is a good thing, but that can be learned — while the character to represent the people who sent you into office generally cannot. Face it — this criterion derives from the fact that Tony Bushala never moved away, something that in my opinion gives one better perspective on the world, and he’s set on turning that deficit into a virtue. And Zenger, who should know better, goes right along with it.
Seriously, Vern — do you think you’ve suffered, or benefitted, from your years away in school and such?
Greg,
Moving away from your wife and kids to run for political office screams lack of character.
Anyone stating otherwise needs a serious life priority adjustment.
That’ll be the last we talk about it.
Is that how Kerr’s wife sees it? I’m sure that she likes having your words crammed into her mouth.
Yeah, if I were you, I’d try to stop the conversation too.
I really don’t care what she thinks, Greg. Mostly because it’s not relevant to the issue at hand.
A father’s place is at home. It’s not 40 miles away in an apartment in Placentia.
Look, a Republican opining on how to be a good father!
Does Josh Ferguson have a wife and kids? Let’s hear your criticism of his planning to spend the next thirty months after June in Sacramento, given how important this proximity to family seems to be to you.
FWIW, I expect that Kerr would be based here during the day, and with his family most evening — and that would not prevent someone who is approximately a million times smarter than Lucille Kring from figuring out how to serve the district well.
Shaw, meanwhile — was BOB HUFF’S man in La Habra. As I oppose Kring, I don’t want to beat him up TOO badly now — but … well, did you FORGET ABOUT THAT or something?
That’s a stupid comment, Greg.
“FWIW, I expect that Kerr would be based here during the day”
More errant, ignorant bullshit. The job is located in Santa Ana – that’s in the 1st District. But I absolutely agree that Coto Joe will be spending evenings in the 5th Supervisorial District.
Ryan, it’s also indicative of overweeing ambition and a distorted ego – just the sort of character traits one wants in a politician.
Any one stating otherwise is most likely a partisan hack.
Well, that’s a typical load of horse shit.
Purgery is a crime, Greg. JoKer’s committed the same crime twice. Maybe he’s a nice guy, but you have to admit committing 2 crimes back in o back is not the kind of trait we should admire in anyone, now is it?
The last two clowns who tried doing the same bullshit were Sidhu and Galloway. And that didn’t work out too good for either of those ass clowns, now did it Greg?
JoKers toast…I’ll do my best to make sure if that!

ON OUTSIDE SPENDING:
Hard to think of a better argument for Kerr than that.
ON THE INCONTROVERTIBLE WISDOM OF LUSHILLE KRING:
Kring’s strategy is now apparent: she’s going to try to make people throw up on their mail-in ballots. Although given that her picture in the voice is from the days when people paid their campaign expenses with pelts, that’s she’s caught on to the use of money for payment shows that she’s not entirely out of touch.
Oh, but before you dismiss and ridicule Lucille, consider THIS which came in my mailbox yesterday – DID YOU REALIZE that even though she seemed like no more than a disgruntled member of a sidelined minority on the Anaheim Council, she has not only managed single-handedly to reduce gang-related crime in the region by 53%, but also helped our local fire departments get the coveted highest rating of CLASS 1! Mira no mas:
Geez, what are we waiting for – let’s make this woman SUPERVISOR! Not.
Just another reason why she’s below the line.
