1. WE (and “we” in this piece refers to this blog along with a whole s***load of our friends), support comprehensive immigration reform with a pathway to citizenship, as well as the DREAM Act and DACA until better reform comes along, and we welcome hard-working law-abiding immigrants to this great nation with open arms, because we NEED them.
2. Hence, we oppose the cheap and hateful politics of scapegoating minorities, specifically and most recently the immigration policies of the loathsome Trump administration – the draconian deportations, separation of families, caging of children, denial of basic human and American rights to immigrants, and that “big beautiful $10 billion Wall.”
3. Hence we celebrate the revolt(s) of our wonderful Golden Sanctuary State, embodied in the “California Values Act” SB 54, to resist the Trump administration’s immigration policies wherever possible and legal, including not co-operating with Immigrations and Customs Enforcement except in the direst and most necessary of circumstances.
4. Hence we OPPOSE (now we’re getting whiplash) the moves of local municipalities like Huntington Beach and Los Alamitos, which have critical masses of anti-immigrant residents and anti-immigrant council majorities, to resist California’s sanctuary status and side instead with Trump and ICE, as for example the lawsuit of Huntington Beach’s showboating rightwing City Attorney Michael E. Gates against the state, which was upheld last year by outlier Judge James Crandall.
5. Hence we SUPPORT the APPEAL of this ruling, launched by our friends in Oak View Comunidad, HB’s biggest barrio, along with Los Alamitos Communities United, the National Day Laborer Organizing Network, and the ACLU of Southern California, against Huntington Beach’s defiance of our Sanctuary State Law. (Ouch our neck.)
6. To find out more about this appeal, and also to help CELEBRATE AND DEFEND SANCTUARY, we invite you to this rally and forum from 6 to 8pm tonight at the Community Congregational Church at 4111 Katella in Los Alamitos – yes, Los Alamitos where the whole Haters’ Counter-revolution began a year and a half ago – remember THIS???
In the organizers’ words:
From Los Alamitos to Huntington Beach, we celebrate our beautiful communities and our California values of inclusion and equality for all. Join an evening gathering to learn more about community efforts to reject hate-filled deportation policies and defend sanctuary. We’ll hear litigation updates, creative art interventions, and more about what’s coming up!
This event last week was just a prelude for today’s events: First, a rally at 12 at the 4th District Court of Appeals, 601 W. Santa Ana Blvd, Santa Ana – wear YELLOW if you support our IMMIGRANTS!
Then, at 1:30, a hearing on the appeal discussed above, which I am now calling – to avoid confusion – “The Sanctuary Counter-Counter-Revolution!”
(California Values Act or Sanctuary State was the Revolution; Huntington Beach, Los Alamitos, and other municipalities launched their Counter-Revolution against that which led to a sympathetic ruling; and now we’ve got our friends launching an appeal or Counter-Counter-Revolution against THAT, in support of the state law.)
Stay tuned!
