Huntington Beach School Trustee Gina Clayton-Tarvin — who is running for City Council in alliance with Oscar Rodriguez, Kenneth Inouye, and former Councilmember Jill Hardy — sounded an alert today about her racist, Holocaust-denying opponent Gracey van der Mark (or as I like to call her, “Batshit Gracey VD Mark of the Beast”). In a foreshadowing of what she’d be like if she ever again got a legitimate title to throw around, she bamboozled the unsuspecting La Mirada Chamber of Commerce into letting her moderate — a word not normally associated with VD Mark — a school board debate there in the district that La Mirada shares with Norwalk.
The above link is to a story by our friend-in-crusading-small-journalism Brian Hews of Cerritos and the Cerritos Community News. His story has to be read to be believed, but it involves VD Mark striding up to the lectern to interrogate candidates on topics including critical race theory (which is simply not taught in primary and secondary education) as well as the district’s supposedly lax policy about … abortion?!
The candidates were loudly wondering what the hell was going on; ultimately a member of the School Board called for a break, sprinkled holy water on VC Mark — and as she began to vaporize, he sucked the smoke into a ShopVac, which was taken immediately to the San Onofre Eternalish Nuclear Graveyard.
(OK, everything after “called for a break” is my somewhat fevered extrapolation, but it’s not that much weirder than what actually happened!)
You may ask, “What could be weirder”? How about this? (And if you are Sharon Quirk-Silva or anyone who knows and likes Sharon Quirk-Silva, you might want to let her know that she should read this story NOW.)
After all of this had gone on, a Trustee at a neighboring school district — Soo Yoo, who is running for State Assembly right now against Quirk-Silva — sat around hobnobbing contentedly and posing for photos with VD Mark! I know that you don’t believe me, so in self-defense I have to appropriate this photo from Brian Hews’s article:
Clayton-Tarvin has been doing heroic work in exposing Gracey and trying to keep this crazy racist — who claims that she can’t be racist because she has some Latino heritage — out of City of Huntington Beach politics, and I am glad to further her cause here.
But it’s the Soo Yoo part of this equation that has my jaw dropping. Read Hewes’s description of what preceded this photo, and ask yourself how brain-addled or plainly perverse an actual school trustee would have to be to pose smiling in a picture with her. It’s like she has inhaled some of the crazy spoor from Gracey!

In a series of Facebook posts and videos, ABC Unified School District President of the Board and 67th Assembly candidate Soo Yoo unleashed a torrent of racist, transphobic, bigoted, xenophobic rants that could get the Cerritos resident censured by the ABCUSD Board; others might call for her resignation.

“If our taxes pay for [sic] out of state abortions, if babies can be murdered up to 40 weeks after conception, you and I are responsible. Please stand with me in this war against humanity.”
In the same post, she clearly demonstrated her transphobic views, “You are responsible for sinking California, I know that this may be hard to hear but it is the truth. If our community starts to [sic] pouring out transgenders….”
In another post, Yoo advocated for book banning, “In the name of equity and diversity, our children are being exposed to promiscuous curriculum brought on by the [sic] eftist agenda. We need to reform California and make it great once again.”
(Fair use does not allow me to include the Trump’s Big Lie and “we’re brainwashing children to be sex maniacs” screeds.)
Yes, we cannot blithely let Gracey win a seat the HB City Council, where she would make Tito Ortiz look like the second coming of Abraham Lincoln. But we also cannot blithely Soo Yoo into the State Assembly, where she’s a little too close to the Proud Boys Ladies Auxiliary to fit in. Fullerton does not need the embarrassment!
