And so it begins – The Betsy Devos Era of Education
House Bill 610 makes some large changes. Inform yourselves.
This bill will effectively start the school voucher system to be used by children ages 5-17, and starts the defunding process of public schools.
In addition the bill will eliminate the Elementary and Education Act of 1965, which is the nation’s educational law and provides equal opportunity in education.
It would repeal ESSA (Every Students Succeeds Act):
ESSA is a big comprehensive program that covers programs for struggling learners, AP classes, ESL classes, classes for minorities such as Native Americans, Rural Education, Education for the Homeless, School Safety (Gun-Free schools), Monitoring and Compliance and Federal Accountability Programs.
The Bill also abolishes the Nutritional Act of 2012 (No Hungry Kids Act) which provides nutritional standards in school breakfast and lunch.
The bill has no wording whatsoever protecting Special Needs kids, no mention of IDEA and FAPE.
Some things ESSA does for Children with Disabilities
- Ensures access to the general education curriculum.
- Ensures access to accommodations on assessments.
- Ensures concepts of Universal Design for Learning
- Includes provisions that require local education agencies to provide evidence-based interventions in schools with consistently underperforming subgroups.
- Requires states in Title I plans to address how they will improve conditions for learning including reducing incidents of bullying and harassment in schools, overuse of discipline practices and reduce the use of aversive behavioral interventions (such as restraints and seclusion).
Please call your representative and ask him/her to vote NO on House Bill 610 (HR 610) introduced by three Republican reps.

wondered how long it would take before the Juice broke down in drooling, panting, quivering incoherency. it would seem with their Free California movement in full black-shirt swing, leftists would be grafeful to handle their “educational priorities” themselves. thats all it will do is devolve to the states. then the rest of the country, which disagrees with you, will do what they think is best too.
but leftists dont like regions doing what is best for themselves. and now they’ll have to push their own mess of educational social programs. they might try teaching, but thats a lot to expect from people whose union leader once said “(when students pay union dues) that’s when I’ll start representing the interests of school children.”

If California does ever secede, the rest of you (out where you’ll live) will have an easier time dismantling the public school system and coming up with something less “teachy.” Until then, we still have a stake in the educational system in the rest of the nation, so we’re going to keep on spoiling your fun.

Choices in Education Act of 2017
This bill repeals the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 and limits the authority of the Department of Education (ED) such that ED is authorized only to award block grants to qualified states.
The bill establishes an education voucher program, through which each state shall distribute block grant funds among local educational agencies (LEAs) based on the number of eligible children within each LEA’s geographical area. From these amounts, each LEA shall: (1) distribute a portion of funds to parents who elect to enroll their child in a private school or to home-school their child, and (2) do so in a manner that ensures that such payments will be used for appropriate educational expenses.
To be eligible to receive a block grant, a state must: (1) comply with education voucher program requirements, and (2) make it lawful for parents of an eligible child to elect to enroll their child in any public or private elementary or secondary school in the state or to home-school their child.
No Hungry Kids Act
The bill repeals a specified rule that established certain nutrition standards for the national school lunch and breakfast programs. (In general, the rule requires schools to increase the availability of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat or fat free milk in school meals; reduce the levels of sodium, saturated fat, and trans fat in school meals; and meet children’s nutritional needs within their caloric requirements.)
That does appear to be the bill. I’m not sure whether and how we disagree about it, though.

As we see the latest polls about how Presidential the speech was last night…..with even 24% of Democrats approving……meanwhile only 43% of Republicans fully approving…you have to ask yourself one question: “Is that really FAKE NEWS?” The person giving the speech is FAKE – little doubt of that, and as they say in show business: “You are who you hang with!” Betsy Ross DeVous……”is that French or Pomeranian?” Wow, we are now going to bomb ISIS back into the deepest part of Timbucktu…no doubt. The level of ignorance here is astounding. Try doing some research and not drinking the kool-aid.
What you failed to realize that the previous bill allowed for every student in a school district where 40% qualified for free and reduced lunch could now also receive it. Wealthy schools were combined in reports with poor schools by school districts to secure funding for free lunch for all. You on the left are always so clear that you don’t want successful people to receive anything for free should be appalled that rich and upper middle class kids could now receive free or reduced lunch.
The other problem is every child was given exactly the same food in the same quantity. So the 40 pound girl received as much as the 80 pound boy. Does this make sense to you? The students aren’t eating Michelle Obama’s healthy lunches. They are bringing from home the foods they like. So that has not worked.
The bill sought to raise the threshold to 60% of a school district to qualify in order to stop funding for middle class and rich kids receiving this benefit clearly designed for the poor. Then there would be more money to provide the poor children better meals than they currently receive. As to the summer program, the EBT card is given out and anyone can use it so you are not guaranteeing that child is receiving the food since the food stamp fraud perpetrated is legendary.
Also, if the parents are already receiving food stamps, we are actually paying to feed that child twice. Again, on what planet does that make sense? Stop being stupid and actually go out and find the bill, read it, assuming you can, and learn so that you don’t continue to promulgate your ridiculous threats and misinformation.
Out of curiosity, Connie, since you’re making a lot of assertions that will require a lot of time to check out. where do you come by the knowledge, interest, and expertise that leads you to post this comment here?
I’m trying to assess whether your assertions are worth the effort to rebut on a post that has died down by now.
