The silence of the OCGOP and the Lincoln Club, which both had issued a few press releases this week, on the horrific events in Charlottesville has been disappointing. A significant number of conservative voices has expressed their repudiation, such as this one:
“From the very start of his run, one of the most serious charges against Mr. Trump was that he panders to racists. Many of his supporters, myself included, managed to convince ourselves that his more outrageous comments — such as the Judge Gonzalo Curiel controversy or his initial hesitance to disavow David Duke’s endorsement — were merely Bidenesque gaffes committed during the heat of a campaign.
It is now clear that we were deluding ourselves. Either Mr. Trump is genuinely sympathetic to the David Duke types, or he is so obtuse as to be utterly incapable of learning from his worst mistakes. Either way, he continues to prove his harshest critics right.
Mr. Trump once boasted that he could shoot someone in the street and not lose voters. Well, someone was just killed in the street by a white supremacist in Charlottesville. His refusal this weekend to specifically and immediately denounce the groups responsible for this intolerable violence was both morally disgusting and monumentally stupid. In this, Mr. Trump failed perhaps the easiest imaginable test of presidential leadership. Rather than advance a vision of national unity that he claims to represent, his indefensible equivocation can only inflame the most vicious forces of division within our country.”
It is not that all of the sudden here in OC we are immune to the toxic message of Trump and his remaining top white supremacists aides and advisers. As a reminder to Republican Party of Orange County Chairman Fred M. Whitaker, this is a short list of of OJB posts on the Trump’s impact in our county:

Here’s John Oliver on the topic:
Republicans are the party of Trump. There is no middle ground, shine light on the racists, teach the young that Republicans are the problem.
Right. Right. Demonize a whole group.
I’m sure that will work well.
You stay in the party, you endorse the views… do you know anything about the ERA? Repubs refuse to recognize equal rights for women? You clowns should be consigned to the dust bin…but you are likely only a Repub because your parents were. Permanent childhood.
That’s a lot of judgement.
Your anger makes you stronger. See how far that gets you.
Sorry “rintrah” it was Republicans who pushed through the Civil Rights Act and Voters Rights Acts of the 60s over the extreme push-back of the Dems, as well as the GOP pushing for ERA. I keep hearing that the parties have done an about-face since the GOP was the party of Lincoln, but right up through recent decades it has been Republicans working for the rights of the oppressed. The Dems prefer to keep an entire underclass of people in legal limbo and misery because it is how their leaders control their voters, “vote for us or the other guy will deport your family and friends,” but when the Dems were in control for 8 years and could ram anything they wanted through Washington and down our throats, did they offer up immigration reform? nope, they used their power base to force onto this nation a health care program that forced young people into expensive insurance they neither needed nor wanted, ruined entire families who had health care they liked and could afford and pushed them onto the public rolls, and then exempted themselves from having to participate. Please, tell me all about how ALL Republicans are evil.
In fact, when was the last amnesty for undocumented immigrants? Oh yeah–Reagan. Obama deported more people than Trump has. No, that is NOT me sticking up for Trump, I have no use for him and did not vote for him. Had the Dems not tried to shove Hillary down our throats people would not have backed Trump in desperation, like gnawing off one’s political arm to get away from the date you drunkenly brought home last night in a Hillary suit. How bad does the Dem candidate have to be to make Trump look like an option? You guys should have been able to run a CAT for office and beat the guy we got stuck with, who does not represent any of the Republican views I have committed my life to, and he conveniently re-registered as GOP for this purpose. I have actually always thought he was a ringer put into place to make Hillary look good in comparison and when the public preferred him over Hillary (talk about BAD) he ran with it. He was outrageous because he was SUPPOSED to be. We in the GOP did all in our power to STOP the guy. It was the Dems who pushed the nation right into his arms to flee a future with Hillary. DO NOT tar all of us with the same brush, “rintrah”….
Sure. And Strom Thurmond became a Republican because of the Republican Party’s support for African American civil rights. Welcoming that racist bastard into your party was a deal with devil. The GOP could have said no to him (and all those other former Dixiecrat bigots who transformed the Southern states into Republican bastions). You might have lost a few elections, but you’d still have your soul.
No, it wasn’t “Republicans who pushed through the Civil Rights Act” it was the leaders of the Democratic party.
“Of course, it was also Democrats who helped usher the bill through the House, Senate, and ultimately a Democratic president who signed it into law. The bill wouldn’t have passed without the support of Majority Leader Mike Mansfield of Montana, a Democrat. Majority Whip Hubert Humphrey, who basically split the Democratic party in two with his 1948 Democratic National Convention speech calling for equal rights for all, kept tabs on individual members to ensure the bill had the numbers to overcome the filibuster.”

And while it is true that more Republicans overall voted for civil rights if you break it down by ‘union’ and ‘confederate’ states more Democrats percentage-wise voted for the Civil Rights Act. Nowadays, all those southern ‘dixiecrats’ are Republicans.
And what “rights of the oppressed” have the Republicans been pushing? Certainly not Voting Rights.
Yep, Obama and the Dems didn’t get immigration reform passed, they were only dealing with a cratering economy and a Republican party determined to oppose Obama on everything (the country be-damned).
That gives the lie to this ridiculous statement by you: “when the Dems were in control for 8 years and could ram anything they wanted through Washington and down our throats”
The Democrats/Obama only had control of both houses for two years, but good attempt at rewriting history. Why is it even so-called “reasonable” Republicans still can’t be trusted with the facts?
Do you Republicans ever wonder why your party, for all their pissing and moaning about the ACA for the last 7 years, have never offered up a workable plan? That’s because ‘Obamacare’ was the conservative option and even then no Republican voted for it. No, Republicans just lied and lied some more about how horrible ‘Obamacare’ was and that it was ‘socialized medicine’ and all you Republicans swallowed it hook, line and sinker.
The ACA needs work (thanks, Marco Rubio, http://www.salon.com/2017/03/22/how-republicans-quietly-sabotaged-obamacare-long-before-trump-came-into-office_partner/) but it’s not the disaster that you Republicans think it is.
“…forced young people into expensive insurance they neither needed nor wanted, ruined entire families who had health care they liked and could afford and pushed them onto the public rolls, and then exempted themselves from having to participate. ”
Hard to unpack all those lies, but I’ll attempt it.
Young people have to participate in the health care market for it to be viable. Young people do need health insurance, but more importantly it insures that there will be an insurance market when they are older and need it more. That’s the basic premise of insurance and anyone who tells you otherwise is lying. Proof, under ‘Trumpcare’ where they eliminated mandates for young people, premiums for older folks 47 and up would have had to jump by a huge amount, making their insurance virtually unaffordable (https://www.fool.com/retirement/2017/03/12/trumpcare-could-send-seniors-insurance-rates-skyro.aspx).
As for “ruining entire families” not remotely true. Yes, some folks had to change doctors and a small percentage of people had to pay more, but the offset was millions of people being insured, the end of lifetime caps, many fewer medical bankruptcies and relief for those with pre-existing conditions and the extending of MediCare’s financial solvency by at least twelve years. Sorry, there is no ‘perfect’ solution where everyone wins, that’s just reality, but ‘Obamacare’ did far more good than bad.
Who exactly “exempted themselves”? Not Congress, they all get their plans off the exchanges.
Then there’s your Hillary hysteria, none of it true. Democrats voted just like Republicans. Democrats had the same opportunity to break free as the Republicans, but Bernie lost in the south. End of story.
What is so sad to me is that you think of yourself as a “reasonable” Republican, but you believe in almost as much phony BS as the Trump supporters. Shocking really.
