One of Ansel Adams’s series of photos of Manzanar during the internment camps, here overlain with the colors of the Iranian flag.
Don Donald Trump has continued to implement Vladimir Putin’s wish list for destroying the United States from within — I’m not saying he’s taking orders, it could all be a coincidence! — by assassinating a (like it or not) beloved foreign military leaders on a flimsy pretext, leading to:
- converting what had been a generally stable situation in Iran into an actively antagonistic one
- Iranians resuming work on nuclear weapons — and possibly a massive Israeli strike that will leave Israel a sitting duck for economic (from Europe) and violent (from who knows where?) responses in its wake
- converting what had been a reasonably stable situation in Iraq into one where Americans are being expelled and it’s not clear who will fill the vacuum
- the inevitable resurgence of ISIS in an increasingly chaotic Iraq
And that’s just in the Middle East. Domestically, today we’re seeing the outlines of Trump’s possible re-election strategy: intensifying mistreatment of Muslims and stirring up more rage and violence against them, but treating even citizens as enemies.
The Washington State branch of CAIR, the Center for American-Islamic Relations, is reporting that the Administration has detained an American citizen of Iranian ancestry for ten hours at the U.S. border, and claimed the right to do so again (and again.)
Politically, I’m not a big believer in giving paramilitary police organizations (and right now ICE counts as one) exactly what they want — which is generally a conflict where they get to try out new anti-riot toys and stomp people and throw them in jail for attacking officers, so someone else will have to raise any such call. But I am a big fan of giving them what they don’t want — which is truckloads of gum in their works.
This is a call for attorneys to join me in determining how we here in OC can commit to being gum in their works if they continue to prey of American citizens of Iranian ancestry. This is not to downplay the importance of defending the rights of permanent residents and such; it is simply a reaction to this lawless Administration having deliberately crossed a line in dealing with citizens that it should know not to cross — a line resonant of names like Manzanar, Tule Lake, and Korematsu. It is a call to organized, aggressive, and tireless opposition. Not on our watch.
OC and LA have the largest group of residents of Iranian/Persian in the world outside Iran. This include a huge number of U.S. citizens. So I will issue call to my fellow attorneys here: our Southern Californian Iranians are our people, and if Trump comes here messing with them, detaining them, and god knows what other Presidential powers he may think would help him get re-elected, we had better be prepared to fight him every inch of the way. We need training, we need strategy, and — as much as anything else — we need trained legal professionals who can take the fight to the sorts of people who — for blatantly and baselessly internal political reasons — would re-enact the sordid history of Manzanar in our new decade.
I’m not active in the legal community of either county, but if someone who is would like to work with me to create and propagate petitions for people who want to get ourselves locked and loaded to respond to any such aggression in court, please let me know. We will not quietly repeat the atrocities of the past.
This is your belated Weekend Open Thread. Write about that or whatever else you’d like, within reasonable limits.
*They used to call these things “Hissy Fits”. They used to see babies have Temper Tantrums…in the Robinson’s May and just shake your head. They used to have bad kids kick their grandma’s shins and stamp their feet. They used to not medicate these kids, but then came ritalin and all those 180 vaccines that kids get and you don’t see that behavior as much as you used to. Little kids used to use crayolas and wright weird things on the pots and pans in the kitchen or daddy’s pick-up truck. Bad kids used to scream and yell and make loud noises whenever mom didn’t buy them an ice cream. We remember little boys and girls pulling each others hair or throwing food into their brothers or sisters bassinet. Yeah, we remember those days……just like yesterday.
in Washington D. C. ya know!
For WOT-
You have probably heard that China has stopped accepting the world’s recyclables, closing many CRV redemption centers (although continuing deposit collections, of course !) and sparking fears of diversion to landfills given the scarcity of domestic recycling infrastructure, also surcharging plastic grocery bags (again, without a corresponding solution !)
Imagine my surprise at the following YouTube suggestion,(4 years old!) describing a sustainable solution to styrofoam, (worms) and possibly also plastic bag HDPE (bacteria, per a 2009 study mentioned at 4:09 mark) Even better, a square foot in your yard and a trip to the pet store could (at least for styrofoam) totally exclude the expensive, dysfunctional Sacramento bureaucracy.
Well, FWIW. Cheers.-
I went on a ride with Taormina a year or so ago (it’s fun to ride with someone who can tell you a story about half the buildings we pass by.) And as we passed up his Republic waste company and saw pallet after pallet of recyclables that China would no longer take, he cursed Trump’s trade war.
So what is the styrofoam broken down into? I know that it’s white — and eventually beige — worm poop, but what’s the composition of that poop? Would this just create a problem like the one’s we’ve had with micro-plastics, where it more readily enters the food chain? Or does in end up as something other than polystyrene plus regular worm poop.
Note that (1) worms ain’t getting to the bottom of a giant heap of styrofoam — and if they do they ain’t getting back to the top — and (2) if what you end up with is a pile of small light pellets, they will carry far and wide in the wind.
Still, it’s a cool demonstration.
In the last decade we learned the unpleasant difference between “Healthcare” ( what we wanted) and (the more Industry profitable) “Insurance” ( what we got instead). Will this decade’s lesson similarly differentiate “Recycling” and “Transportation to recycling” ? Why do Wal-Mart and Nike get excoriated for wheel barrowing to the bank while using third world sweatshops, while the “recycling” industry gets a pass ? in the several decades of “recycling” as CA state mandate, how did the MIA state of DOMESTIC re-use avenues stay off the radar (except for aluminum cans !) and WHERE are all those CRV nickels and dimes GOING ? Jerry Brown stole them (accumulation of un-refunded deposits) a few years back to “balance” the state budget, with hardly a smirch on his political sainthood status. With redemption sites disappearing following China’s cutoff THE STATE NOW KEEPS EVEN MORE UN-REDEEEMED DEPOSITS ! (Going WHERE ?) To the tune of $308 MILLION in 2018 – (LA Times 2/28/19) who knows HOW MUCH NOW, since our $1.1 BILLION State Accounting System under Betty Yee is a BLACK HOLE OF DYFUNCTION (and probably corruption) What do you want to bet that Waste Haulers like Republic have an express lane deposit payout window at Cal-Recycle ( for containers WE give them FREE) while consumers can’t even FIND a redemption site ? After Taormina’s sell out to Republic, I don’t know if he retains any industry interests, ( Did you know that Republic is 1/3 owned by “philanthropist” Bill Gates thru his Cascadia Investments ?) but I have a different target for his cursing through crocodile tears as I remain under wallet suction by the broken system he has profited from. BTW China announced the (worldwide) recycling cutoff in July 2017 which predated the “Trade War” depending upon what event you want to declare as the “start”-
