L-R: Sal Tinajero, Lorraine Prinsky, and Ed Lopez
One general comment regarding all of these boards: I say that a lot of people listed below “haven’t taken out papers.” It would be more accurate to say that the OC Registrar of Voters list does not indicate that they have taken out papers. Other than people who have qualified for the ballot, only a handful are shown as having taken out papers. I suspect that this is erroneous — I’m not sure how else they would have gotten on the list (maybe electronic filing?) — but I don’t know how to fix it, and I don’t know that I’ll have time to find out today. (It may well be Covid-related.)
As noted in our introduction to this year’s general election coverage, the filing period for all races is underway; it ends this Friday, August 7 (or 8/6, for cities closed on 8/7, and with some extensions to 8/12) for all races that have made it this far. Now we’ll look at four Community College District Boards, to see what’s going on. This will be updated as need be and time allows.
North Orange County Community College District
Area 2
Incumbent Ed Lopez has qualified and is unopposed.
Area 4
Vacant seat, so there’s no eligible incumbent — and so filing ends on Friday.
Evangelina Rea Rojas, a Community College Professor, has qualified.
Miguel Alvarez, a Businessman/Education Adminstrator, has qualified.
Yisel Cuevas only “pinged” (expressed interest on the ROV’s website.)
Area 5
Incumbent Jacqueline Rodarte has qualified.
Two other potential candidates only pinged.
Area 7
Incumbent Ryan Bent has qualified.
Keri Kropke appears to have done everything necessary to qualify.
Dana Swart and Beverly Falco both pinged only.
Coast Community College District
Area 2
Incumbent Jerry Patterson has qualified. No overtime.
Tony Bui has qualified.
Area 3
Lorraine Prinsky has qualified and is currently unopposed.
Area 4
Incumbent Mary Hornbuckle has qualified.
Michael Collier has qualified.
Comments: I know Patterson, a member of the Old Guard who has been in OC political office since Gettysburg (or so), but not Bui. I’m happy with Prinsky and (but know nothing about Collier.)
Rancho Santiago Community College District
Area 1
Incumbent Zeke Hernandez only pinged. No one else is in the race. Watch for a scramble if he doesn’t file.
Area 3
No incumbent, so it ends on Friday. Sal Tinajero has qualified, and is currently unopposed.
Area 5
The incumbent, Claudia Alvarez, vacated the seat, so this did not end on Friday.
David Crockett and Samuel Ulloa have qualified, as has Brett Elliott Franklin, who served on the Santa Ana City Council in the Aughts and was an OCGOP delegate and endorsee.
Area 7
Arianna Barrios resigned in time for this seat to be considered vacant, so this will go into overtime.
Tina Arias Miller has qualified — and OH MY FUR AND WHISKERS Loretta Sanchez has to0!
Comments: What’s up, Zeke? I really wish that Alvarez were the one staying on the Board and Tinajero were running for Mayor, but Sal certainly will raise the Board’s quality. I don’t recall David Crockett, but I don’t recall being a fan of Franklin. Amazing that this may go unfilled. Miller has an Ed.D, so that’s a pretty good argument for her. Loretta — get back to where you once belonged!
South Orange County Community College District
Area 1
Incumbent David Lang is not on the list. Incumbent Carolyn Inmon has qualified.
Area 3
Barbara Jay is the incumbent, has qualified for the ballot, and is currently unopposed.
Area 6
Incumbent James Wright and challenger Ryan Dack have both qualified.
Area 7
Tim Jemal is the incumbent and has qualified for the ballot. Two others have only pinged.
