ELECTIONS RUN BY THE REGISTRAR OF VOTERS

Get it? Some OC ROV run races getting extensions? Like hair extensions? You do know what they are, right, readers? P.S. Thanks in advance to AiryHair.com which has not sponsored this blog, for not suing us! (Vern and I could both use some of these, actually.)

CITY RACES (TO COME, WHERE AVAILABLE)
These will be listed below if and when I have time. Are other people find themselves crazy busy during the stay-at-home? Commenters, feel welcome to chip in!
Never understood why incumbents get a filing deadline extension. I understand potentially for full-time positions, but all these board positions are part-time and presumably the incumbent knows what the deadlines are and why they are set in place.
Everyone *except* the incumbents get the five-day extension.
What they AEIOU extension is supposed to prevent is incumbents gaming the system by telling only their preferred successor that they don’t intend to file, so that that successor can be the only one on the ballot when the incumbent fails to file at the last minute.
With the extension in place, everyone else will have a chance to file on an equal (except for the lack of a head start) footing with the other potential successors.
I misunderstood it, I thought the incumbents were included. If the incumbent did not file, and there is an extension, would this have been present even prior to the deadline being reached so successor or not, everyone had the same filing period anyways ?
Probably I am missing something here, but is there a strategy to filing for office right before the deadline rather than sometime during the filing period ?
Yeah, there is such a strategy. Essentially, the person who files late has more information about the lineup in the race; they can choose between races and ward off a counter-filing by someone who would have run against them to stop them. And of course an incumbent can lull other candidates into thinking that they can wait to file during the extension period — and then quickly swoop in and stop it. There are also considerations about candidate statements, which are expensive.
There are also advantages to filing very early, as one may shape the race in a way that may ward off other candidates.
