St. Margaret’s Tartans break Mission Viejo Diablos 41 game winning streak

While the OC Register covered last nights record breaking football team victory by San Juan Capistrano’s St. Margaret’s Tartans in today’s sports section it is worth noting that any team winning 42 consecutive games in any sport is an awesome accomplishment deserving of kudos for that achievement. This is the longest streak in the state. Therefore I do not agree with the discussion that an asterisk be added in the record books that the Spartans are a small school of 400 students when compared to Mission Viejo High School with an enrollment numbering in the thousands. Obviously they are not in the same divisions.
At church this morning I spoke to linebacker/defensive coach “Butch” Ward, a 30 year resident of Mission Viejo. In our discussion Butch credits their victory last night, and in general, to their defensive team. Their main objective was to contain the 29 Palms running backs. He also pointed out that the other teams they face are “bigger, faster and stronger” than the Tartans. Butch said that “winning 42 in a row is no easy task” adding “we play good football.” Based on their record I challenge anyone to refute that assessment.

At this point Butch said they do not know if they will move ahead to the state small school bowl. He pointed out that the other team under consideration to represent southern CA is Francis Parker from San Diego which has an excellent team.
Whether they move on or not I hope that the city of San Juan Capistrano brings the Tartans to a future council meeting and be recognized for their accomplishment.
