Castle Coalition’s Long Beach, CA Workshop on Property Rights

Castle Coalition, the “grass roots” arm of the non-profit Institute for Justice, will host another property rights workshop in CA. This latest workshop is open to anyone who owns residential or commercial property in the greater Long Beach area who wants to get information on how to protect their private property from any government agency considering their power of eminent domain when we have no desire to sell. I recall our efforts to save the Filipino Church on Atlantic Ave in Long Beach when the city tried to take over that property for part of a planned housing development. While we eventually won that fight, and they backed down from that Resolution of Necessity, nothing stops them from coming back and trying again. Following are the workshop details:

Castle Coalition Workshop
Saturday, February 7th
10 a.m.–3 p.m.
Marriott Long Beach
4700 Airport Plaza Drive, Long Beach

“The City of Long Beach recently reauthorized its redevelopment agency’s power of eminent domain, granting local officials the power to condemn your home, business or church for private development. Eminent domain is for public use, things like roads and schools; but California municipalities habitually use the power to transfer perfectly fine properties to wealthy developers.

The Castle Coalition holds workshops nationwide to teach threatened property owners how to keep what they have worked so hard to own, and we’re coming to Long Beach!

Institute for Justice staff will discuss grass roots strategies, preparing for legal action and how to work with the media, and will be joined by Marko Mlikotin of the California Alliance to Protect Private Property Rights.
The workshop is free and includes lunch and materials.
To register, please contact Christina Walsh at cwalsh@ij.org or (703) 682-9320 ext 227 by Wednesday, February 4th.

We are fortunate to have the attorney’s at the Institute for Justice on our side. “Founded in 1991, the Institute for Justice is what a civil liberties law firm should be. As our nation’s only libertarian public interest law firm, we engage in cutting-edge litigation and advocacy both in the courts of law and in the court of public opinion on behalf of individuals whose most basic rights are denied by the government–like the right to earn an honest living, private property rights, and the right to free speech, especially in the areas of commercial and Internet speech. As Wired magazine said, the Institute for Justice “helps individuals subject to wacky government regulations.”
