Just as I predicted recently, the Santa Ana Council “will vote Monday on whether to increase the price of zoo admission by $1 and to pass on a state surcharge of $3 on every parking ticket. It also will vote on whether to cut funding for some positions, supplies and contracts – including $85,000 for library books, records and videos,” according to the O.C. Register.
The City Council is also considering closing down a slew of City Commissions. An email circulated today to City Commissioners explained that “the Cityʼs Executive Management team recommends that the ordinances or resolutions establishing the Early Prevention and Intervention Commission (EPIC), Environmental and Transportation Advisory Committee, Historic Resources Commission, Human Resources Commission, Library Board, and Youth Commission be repealed.”
So the Santa Ana City Council is going to start raising prices on everything, cutting back even further on library funding, and will also do away with the anti-gang (EPIC) Commission and the Library Board, amongst others.
The only good news is that the move to shut down Commissions, and merge others, will also see a few of the Usual Suspects bumped off their City Commissions.
Why isn’t City Manager Dave Ream firing or cutting the pay of any of his overpaid managers?
I am curious how much $ these various “commissions” were costing the city to maintain… was actual progress was being made, and why they were deemed a waste of money?
It’s like the old adage: the Titanic is going down and the crew is re-arranging the deck chairs.
As a public trough feeder yerself LibertAryan ART, isn’t it great to see these unnecessary positions lost?
Great strategy.. Yer endorsement is invaluable.
This is just unbelievable seems to me they want to be rid of these things, are they going to take on all the jobs and commission duties themselves? Laughable
I’m sure that $1 on zoo admission and $3 on parking tickets is gonna raise tons of money.
The City of Santa Ana is an empowerment zone. They were given money for positions in the city of Santa Ana, to train for jobs. What happened to those positions do they not have to honor those positions that the government already paid them for? Are any of the Work Investment Board people getting cut back. I know that there were about 145 jobs that were not filled in order to save money for the city. What happened to the money did the city invest it instead of providing jobs?
I wonder how much those commissions are costing the city because apparently Santa Ana’s city council is voting on giving their sacred cow, the Bowers Museum $1.3 million for a piece of land that could be used for parking.
Penny wise and pound foolish? We keep seeing this mindset of the people at the top. They live in their own bubbles and they see what they want to see, losing sight of the greater picture that affects the majority.
Here’s a link the the OC Register story about the upcoming Bowers donation by the city:

lisann the Empowerment Zone monies were used for employment and community projects. You might recognize some, Delhi Center, Taller Tech, KidWorks. As far as I know only three staff positions are funded under Empowerment Zone. the remainder of the money has gone toward employment programs.
You might not know, that 45 city employees were laid off in January with more to come.
The Workforce Investment Board is a type of commission but the WORK Center its recipient of funds lost people as well in the layoff. I hear even its director.
The Workforce Investment Board and the Empowerment ZOne are different things.
