For the first 60 years of our nation’s history, voting was limited to adult, white, male property owners. According to Infoplease this was somewhere between 10-16% of the population. Every one adult white male property owner was sort of voting on behalf of seven people.
Under current California law you have to be an adult citizen, not on parole or in prison for a felony, and not adjudged legally incompetent. Plus you have to register. Oh, and there is the biggest hurdle of all — you have to show up (or plan in advance and use the mail).
The latest registered voter stat I could find was from last October when everyone got excited about the Obama campaign and registration set a record around 17.3 million. Note that in the upcoming election the turnout of registered voters is forecast at 30-35%, hence around 5.7 million people will vote on 1A-1F (which is about 5.6 million more people than actually understand 1A-1F).
The latest stab at California’s total population is 37.6 million people. So every brave adult soul (who is an adult citizen not on felony probation) who bothers to register and show up on May 19 will effectively be voting on behalf of seven people. Sound familiar? We are still an elite society, its just easier to break into the elite class.
If you skip the election 5/19 you are not just wasting your vote, you are wasting all seven of your votes.
sssshhhhhh!!!!!
Why is it, that voting in this country is treated like jury duty or going to the dentist?
Some countries voting is a big social event like a church bake sale and get together, here in the USA it is more like a prostate exam or pap smear appointment.
