There’s an item on tonight’s council agenda that highlights the ridiculous overhead that government do-gooders can add to otherwise trivial tasks. In this case, the Orange County Health Care Agency wants to give out 300 helmets to poor kids in Fullerton. Sounds like a simple task, right? Buy 300 helmets and give them out, hoping that kids will smash their melons a bit less frequently.
But that’s not how government operates – in this case, the county hires Helmet Fitting trainers to train Helmet Fitters to fit helmets on juvenile fittee’s. Before that can happen, Helmet Fitter trainee’s must be Helmet Fitter certified, presumably by some kind of Helmet Fitting certification authority.
The problem is, if they wouldn’t do this what looks ridiculous to you and me, there for sure would be some parents who would sue them for lots of money if their children are injured riding a bike.
Remember the woman who spilled coffee over her lap and then sued MickeyD? Or the woman who put her dog in the microwave to dry it?
There is common sense, and then there are lawyers…
You’re probably right, Joe. Nevertheless, it “looks” ridiculous because it is. If the county is so worried about liability, hand the helmets to a non-profit and let them give ’em out.
As long as they have blonde hair it will be OK.
At least at County Parks like Craig and Mason, where the supervisors have been known to encourage citing latino’s as a way of keeping out the riffraff.
The trouble is in Irvine, progressive muslims look a lot like Mexicans.
This happens day in and day out. Just not to blonde kids.
GO WATCH FOR YOURSELF.
These helmets come with instructions and pictures for low literacy instruction= i.e. arrows…
But of course the guy heading this dept. needs to outsource this to his buddies/helmet fitters/independent contractors!!!! he’s an idiot!
Agree with Travis #2—distribute to a local non profit to get the job done!
