Who will pal around with R.C. Hoiles’ ghost now that Steven Greenhut is leaving?
One of my pajaritos reports that Orange County Register editorial writer Steven Greenhut has accepted a job in Sacramento. I am not sure about the job itself but I think he will be writing editorials for a website, possibly with a national scope. I am not sure if he will be involved with a print publication but I am sure he will be revealing all of this soon.
Apparently Greenhut’s columns will still appear in the O.C. Register on Sundays. I believe he will be with them yet for about a month.
I wish Greenhut the very best on his new endeavors! He has been a good friend and a great resource here in Orange County for so long. It will be weird not having him around.
Who will now take the lead at the Register’s editorial department? Greenhut’s shoes will be very hard to fill…
Readers – what are YOUR favorite Greenhut columns over the years?
If I was a betting man I would bet that the Register will be sold within a year, possibly to the Tribune Company. And it will not be a Libertarian paper for long, IMHO. That is too bad, but we will always have our memories of the great paper the Register USED to be…
UPDATE: Scott Moxley has confirmed this story over at the OC Weekly. Here are a few excerpts from his post:
Greenhut told me tonight that he is opening a news bureau and investigative journalism program in the state capital for the Pacific Research Institute, the free-market, individual liberty organization that is based in San Francisco.
“My column will still run fairly regularly in the Register, but with a Sacto focus,” said Greenhut. “I’m leaving on great terms. It’s just time for a new challenge and state government desperately needs some additional attention.”
This is a huge loss to Orange County and the Register. I don’t blame him, tho, and it proves the theory (mine, anyway) that when an organization’s in trouble, the best leave first and later on it’s left with those who can’t be hired elsewhere.
Good riddance!
Art. This breaking news report comes to me as a major shock.
Having worked with Steve for over 10 years in the fight to protect victims of redevelopment agency abuses I can report that he is by far the news media champion for his coverage on this topic.
Any further comments will be to Steve directly.
looks like the capitalism he (and i0 espouse was spelling a death knell for him. i think u r right art, he is leaving while he can still go of his own voition. while i share his libertarian sympathies i frankly found his defense of those positions to be weak. he’s no friedman or hayek. maybe what is left of the OCR can find a better advocate.
Boy, talk about news giving me mixed emotions. Most of his extreme (my word) Libertarian views equated to championing anarchy in my view and it was thus hard to give his predictable musings much weight. I often said that the day he left The Register, either feet first or otherwise, would be momentous. He is wise to move on as The Register, as well as many other newspapers it seems, is in a death spiral. None the less, his departure does seem to indicate that hell just froze over and that is indeed momentous news. Have to wish him the best wherever he lands.
I’ve been a reader of Steve Greenhut’s for many years and to be honest for most of that time I was not a big fan. However Steve came out in opposition to this ridiculous war from its outset and has been a leading advocate against the misconduct of deputies within the jails.
Where are all the so-called liberals on these issues. You would think that we would line up behind him and support him on these important issues, but for the most part we haven’t.
I have a great deal of respect for the fine work Steve does, even though I don’t always agree with him. We have lost a top notch writer and they don’t grow on trees.
I recently had the pleasure of sitting down and discussing politics and enjoying good cigars with Steve. It was a truly enjoyable evening in which we had a terrific civil discourse on the issues of the day.
Let’s do it again soon Steve. Good luck in your new endeavor.
He could hardly continue working for the Jimmy Swaggarts of Libertarianism. Obviously the new owners aren’t going to back values that allow welching on your debts.
This is amazing news, but given the direction of the newspaper business I guess news like this is inevitable. Some will express regret, some will celebrate, most will be oblivious to this departure and what it probably signals. Life goes on, and for Mr. Greenhut let’s hope the road ahead is productive and enjoyable and offers a good defined contribution retirement plan.
What’s that bottle Greenhut’s got in his hand?
David,
Nothing says “freedom” like cerveza!
Best of luck to him and thanks for a job well done.
Going away party at Greenhut’s house this week-end!
All the best to Steve & his family!
Steven starts his new venture the day the Register’s owners meet their creditors in BK court. Coincidence?
More high leveled execs jumping the Grand ship.
