California’s State Legislature just ordered coal for our Christmas stockings…
Paycheck Income Tax Withholding Increases 10% in November and December, due to Budget Deal last May
By the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association
SACRAMENTO — Just in time for the holidays, the State of California will once again dip into the wallets of taxpayers in California.
As part of the budget deal negotiated last May, Californians will see an additional 10% in income tax withheld from their paychecks in November and December.
“This is a real ‘bah humbug’ to California taxpayers, who are already overburdened this year,” said Jon Coupal, President of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association. “This is precisely what we meant when we said the Legislature was kicking the can down the road. Now, at the height of the recession and with the highest
unemployment rate in history, the state will gladly pick the pocket of millions of taxpayers this holiday season.”
The change is due to the legislation (ABX4-17) passed by the Legislature and signed by the Governor to accelerate tax collection due to the State budget crisis. The “income shifting and tax acceleration provisions” require employers to increase by 10% the amount of income taxes withheld, based upon an employee’s current
withholding designation.
“The Legislature pretends this isn’t a ‘tax increase’ since it occurs six months later and it comes out of your paycheck in the dark of night,” said Coupal. “But to the millions who are struggling to keep their jobs and put food on the table, this smells like a tax, acts like a tax, and looks like a tax. It’s a tax.”

All you have to do is adjust your withholding allowances and you can effectively skate around the increase. They’re hoping people don’t think of that. There…you owe me big time, Admin.
You’re right anon. Or what the heck, pay the extra 10% now and get it back when you file your taxes. Think of it as lending the Terminator a helping hand.

I am so angry with the California system. Hello? Why are the lazy people keep getting fed by the government for free with no specific policy? I hate young people applying for welfare. That should’nt even be allowed. If you’re at the age from 18-35 and youre eating off welfare, YOU ARE PATHETIC PERSON. PATHETIC IS A UNDERSTATMENT. People are taking advantage of the welfare/foodstamp system. The government needs to crack down on that instead of cutting school budgets (I AM A FULLTIME EMPLOYEE CARRYING 15 UNITS IN COLLEGE TRYING TO FINISH MY PRE-REQS FOR NURSING IN BSN.) DO I GET ANY FINANCIAL AID? NO. I find it very disgusting on how the government encourages the lazy people to continue to be lazy. Cutting school budget is not going to encourage students to go to school and college students not being able to go to school because they simply cannot afford it. Community college, they are closing applications too because there are not enough teachers and not enough classes. This b-s is getting sooo ridiculous. Don’t even get me started on illegal aliens. They claim they’re not taking anything from the government.. BULL. To me, fine, stay in America, I dont care but pay for your own healthcare and medicine and STOP relying on underpaid people STRUGGLING to get by just like you except WE don’t GET the FREE STUFF!
Good for you Kathleen.
Good luck with your BSN. At least, you can be proud you did it with your own steam.
Good luck, Nurisng is the hardest job ever:)
I read in a newspaper that we don’t have to pay this extra tax. Where do I go for an option.
