Even a stopped clock is right twice a day, so goes the cliche. This week’s elections show the power of that cliche, with notable GOP victories despite the utter cluelessness of GOP leadership (another powerful cliche). GOP leaders have learned nothing from their wins (encouraging Democrats onward in their central planning blitzkrieg). Thus, the failed GOP establishment is again casting aside principles for symbolism in backing Carly Fiorina for Senate.
This week’s GOP victories came despite their clueless leadership. Democrat losses in New Jersey and Virginia represent not merely generic economic concerns, but also a backlash against Washington’s central planning blitzkrieg. Voters are rightly concerned about the strategic assets so quickly captured in the Democrats’ “lightning war” (automakers, banks, insurers) and the treasure spilled for it. Yet, the victorious counterattack came not from aristocratic GOP generals secure in their manses, far from the front. Instead, victory came from a leaderless resistance.
As always, GOP leaders take no lessons away from the battlefield. They fail to recognize that the resistance is driven by ideas – including freedom and fiscal conservatism. So, the Democrat blitzkrieg rolls forward against additional strategic assets (energy, healthcare), ever so slightly fearful because they know that delay is their real enemy. Yet, rather than mount effective defense, some GOP generals (McCain, Graham, Collins, Snowe) bargain for compromise – bipartisan “peace in out time”.
This failed GOP leadership values symbolism over principle. The guiding principle behind the resistance vanguard is freedom. Yet, John McCain has proved an enemy of freedom, declaring war on Free Speech in McCain-Feingold. Now, he and these same like-minded GOP establishment leaders back Carly Fiorina in her push for power. Their political calculus is that she shares their values, but equally important – she is a woman (identity politics, symbolism).
For freedom fighters, the lesson is clear – Fiorina is one of them. Carly Fiorina is John McCain, is Lindsey Graham, is Susan Collins, is Olympia Snowe. And, for those who value freedom, who cherish limited government, and recognize that our children’s future rests on a productive private sector, Fiorina and this failed leadership are nearly indistinguishable from Barbara Boxer (whose agenda stands in opposition to these principles and values).
The DeVore-Fiorina race becomes Norby-Ackerman writ large. Just as the California GOP establishment lined up against the principled conservative (Chris Norby) in the race for AD 72, they are lining up against the principled conservative (Chuck DeVore) in the race for Barbara Boxer’s Senate seat. And, Fiorina’s establishment GOP backers are equally clueless and lacking in principles (just as was the dreadful GOP establishment that picked Dede Scozzafava in NY 23).
Since the GOP leadership deserves fragging, the fight for freedom will be endless and losing unless there is a decisive victory. This war cannot be won in the trenches, but must be won by attacking the Democrat war machine’s supply lines at their source – the state worker unions. California must pass effective Paycheck Protection in the 2010 elections that limits the corrupting influence of state worker unions, whose power is the greatest threat to our freedom. Winning this battle can turn the tide for California and the nation, and help secure freedom and prosperity for future generations.
