Who knew that working for the City of Santa Ana could make you a rich man? The O.C. Register investigated what many of our local cities are paying to their retired city employees.
While most of us have a bankrupt Social Security program to look forward to in our retirement, public employees make a ton of money in retirement, based on their last salary paid. It is common practices for city’s to spike their employee’s pensions by giving them a raise in their last year of employment. This happens a lot in Santa Ana, in particular.
Is this one of the reasons that the City of Santa Ana has such a huge budget deficit?
Here is the list of Santa Ana retired employees who are making over six figures in their retirement:

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!
and only VERY few latino names listed here??????
SOMEBODY HELP!!!!
Are you there, God, its us lil ppl. in Santa Ana???
Those who formulated these retirement plans were clueless and cared not about projecting for the longevity of this city or the sustainability of positive gains and effective forecasting on a quantitative economic scale which would take into consideration those who reside within the city and future generations.
Pretty much you’re telling us that the few have drawn their salaries for life-which makes judges appear less unique. How disenchanting for proponents of the existence of
“The American Dream”.
Pensions are stand alone entities, the city, counties and state should spin them off to the PGF.
Then they can start fresh or join Social Security.
Since the PFG fund only pays out a MAX of 65k a year to pensioner’s, that would go a long way to cancel out the unfunded liability.
Just think, those in the 100k plus club would get pensions they earned without the GAMED Theft.
something needs to be done???
Now this is “unselfishly retiring”,
maybe we can challenge some of these priveleged retirees to do the same for the city they exploited:

Looks to me like there are several Hispanic names on this list. Given that these people probably worked 30 years or more for the city, is the presumed ethnic mix of this list really out of line with expectations for 30 year or more employees?
with regard to annual retirement pay of $100,000 to the top of something like $ 173,000 as listed, I think Admin. is naive (or perhaps jealous, or both) in calling these people automatically rich. Even Obama does not put that level of annual income in the rich category (at least, not yet).
It would be interesting to know how many on this list were law enforcement or fire fighters reaping a more lucrative retirement than the rest of the city workers including via some kind of manipulative spiking. As for a solution, I think focusing on making any spiking action impossible or nearly so should be a first priority.
# 5, Older than,
good points.
Well- rich is not the word- what I think Admin/Art means is
for doing nothing?? that’s rich
we all now that 100 + doesn’t buy much.
A good post would be to compare and contrast an older post–if I remember correctly,
regarding OC Sheriff Dept. Retirees- now that would be thee Post of the Year!
Maybe OJ staff -Red Vixen is a good and resourceful researcher- will dig that up for us???
Teacher teaching for FREE!! WTH, that’s so ridiculous and sad. There are probably younger teachers who are trying to get their credentials and spend lots of money doing it while this idiot decides to take a spot.
How much do you want to bet that Dave Ream will get a Mega Spike to his pay on the way out the door? I’d like to see a list of S.A. employees getting $80,000 or more which is still a crazy amount. Don’t forget they get full medical too.
I bet Jill Arthur gets the spike now and when she retires!
Jill Arthur will get spiked as long and as high as she desires.
That SA list sure has a lot of SAPD retirees.
As far as the “full medical “(log#8) – in reality to max’s out at $400.00 per month for medical premimums. Above that the city retiree pays out of the pocket- & not all get this!! ,just 20+yrs employees who most often have NO soc sec / medi-cal- ect. > Yes its unfair in comparison that many managers can triple dip… ie: military penson+county/city+soc.sec. – but remember what the police/fire unions get in contract negotions – Management often does a “me-too” clause.& remember all contracts must be approved by the city council.
I see a lot of rich cops and firemen which is ok by me but seeing the other city workers here makes me sick.
Outrageous!
Hi Art,
How about a poll with worst city employees for various cites. I like your polls when you let us vote. Start with Santa Ana please!
Amazing, you guys want quality services but all you do is cry over salaries and benefits from those you hire. Six figures and a nice retirement package?? Big deal!! Practically every CEO and Executive in the private sector are making six figure PLUS millions in stock options and bonuses.
Yo Lam,
Earth to Lam…You don’t have to pay six figs to get decent employees to fill pot holes or organize games at the Senior Center. Follow Senior Manager Jill Arthur around the 8th floor of city hall for a day or two and then tell me you can’t find a recent college grad to do her job for less than $40,000 per year. (And Ms. Arthur makes well over $100,000 to answer phones and chat up the Mayor.) I hope more city employees get fired before we reach the end of this little economic downturn. Hey Art, How about a poll on worst city employees? Maybe old “Lam” will get his/her name in the mix!

You’re an idiot!! You don’t know what you’re talking about. You know what most CEOs and top executives do all day? (I shouldn’t have asked, obvious answer is NO) They spend much of their time in meetings, on the phone, signing papers, playing golf, chasing women, drinking coffee and surfing the internet… and they would laugh in your face if you want to pay them six figures, unless it’s a six figure base salary PLUS a ten million dollar guaranteed bonus.
“I hope more city employees get fired before we reach the end of this little economic downturn.”
Make sure you say that the next time you call a cop or your house burns to the ground. Dude, you’re bitter and likely unemployed. Here’s a suggestion, focus on finding yourself a job instead of wishing others lose theirs just to make yourself feel better. It won’t last.
Beautiful, Lam. I was worried about you for a little bit when you were buttering up Crowley the other day. Nice fake to the right there.
