Why won’t Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez support the Dream Act?

Loretta Sanchez has a lot of junk in her purse, but she appears to be lacking in substance

Why won’t Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez support the DREAM ACT?

In July of this year, even the Santa Ana City Council, which hasn’t generally been friendly to immigrants, “voted 5-0 to back this symbolic resolution to support the bill in Congress that would provide a pathway to citizenship for undocumented students,” according to the Latino Politics blog.

This question has been pondered for some time.  Here’s Gustavo Arellano’s take on Sanchez’ stance, “You’d figure Loretta–who owes her career to illegals, from the days of Hermandad Mexicana Nacional to Tan Nguyen and all those Latinos in her district who can now vote due to the 1986 amnesty–would be an obvious supporter of the bill. But to the student’s disappointment, Sanchez refused to co-sponsor the bipartisan bill while simultaneously claiming she’ll vote in favor of it if it ever reaches a House vote.”

Gustavo tackled the subject again this week, in a post wherein he mused that perhaps Sanchez had a few reasons for not supporting the DREAM Act. Here is an excerpt:

1. Loretta doesn’t need to sponsor any pro-immigrant bill, because she says she’ll vote on it: And if Loretta says the sky will be purple mañana, we should believe her? Promises and politicians don’t mix like, say, Tapatío and quesadillas, so mere assurances mean mierda. Besides, sponsoring a bill shows your commitment to its key issues, which leads to the second point…

And here is Change.org’s view of Sanchez’ hypocrisy, “Why is it so important that politicians like Rep. Sanchez sponsor the DREAM Act rather than get away with merely saying that they support it? Because not holding Rep. Loretta Sanchez accountable gives other non-Latino Democrats with less immigrant constituencies an excuse to not sponsor the bill. Words are simply not enough.”

And one more juicy excerpt from the Latino Politics blog, “If you go to Thomas.gov, you can see a list of the five bills Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez is sponsoring/co-sponsoring in the current congressional session. She is willing to lend her name and support to a House Resolution to designate September as “National Child Awareness Month,” but she stops short of co-sponsoring a substantive piece of legislation that could improve the lives of so many young people in her district.”

Check out how passionate Sanchez gets about Vietnamese human rights, in the video above.  Yet she continues to give her own people the cold shoulder.  Vendida…
