Pete Wilson and Meg Whitman – wrong again

Never mind that Arnold guy, have a look at Meg!

California can’t afford another Pete Wilson mistake.  Wilson was Governor Schwarzenegger’s campaign chairman – epic fail.  Now, Californians face a financial crisis because the governor caved when Democrats demanded reckless spending.  The crisis will only worsen when Schwarzenegger’s global warming law, AB 32, wreaks its devastation on the state economy.  Wilson also backed John McCain for President in 2008 – a fiscal conservative’s nightmare.  And, as discussed, Wilson helped empower the prison guards union, driving runaway prison spending. Now, Wilson asks GOP voters to ignore his costly blunders and back Whitman for governor.

As with Schwarzenegger, Pete Wilson appears to be selling GOP voters a “bait-and-switch”.  Schwarzenegger morphed while in office, from fiscal conservative into unprincipled and unpredictable.  Now that Whitman thinks the Primary is over, her transmogrification has already begun.  She is quietly flip-flopping on her opposition to AB 32.  Last year, she promised to issue a moratorium on AB 32 her first day in office.  Now, she is slinking away from that position, instead promising a re-assessment that looks at “better implementation” and “stronger leadership” (not moratorium) – bedrock principles be damned.

Likewise, Whitman still refuses to endorse the Citizen Power Initiative to rein in the overpowerful public employee unions who are blocking reform and corrupting state government.  The silence from her campaign speaks volumes.  If she is too fearful to stand up for taxpayers during the campaign, taxpayers can have little confidence that she will do so if elected.  It looks more and more like Whitman is just another Pete Wilson mistake that Californians can’t afford.
