In another stunning blow to Democrat Congressional hopes across the country, Senator Evan Bayh, the once Presidential hopeful, will not be seeking re-election in the Indiana Senate race for 2010. The blow leaves a fly-over Senate seat prime for Republican pick up.
“After all these years, my passion for service to my fellow citizens is undiminished, but my desire to do so by serving in Congress has waned,” Bayh will say.
Bayh had a 20 point edge and $13 million in the bank over former Republican Senator Dan Coats, who announced last week. Several sources indicate that internal polling had Bayh looking at a difficult re-election however. And $13 million in the bank is a great place to start a Presidential career.
Incidentally, Bayh’s announcement does more than hurt the Democrats. It pulls the rug out. You can see here that any candidate wanting to run in the 2010 Senate race has to file by NOON, February 16th. Tomorrow.
His desire to serve in Congress may have waned, but I’ll bet his desire to be president hasn’t. 50-50 he forms a presidential exploratory committee to challenge Obama in 2012.
Just another corporate-owned politician…doesn’t matter what party he’s from. Congress will be better without him. That is, if he’s replaced by someone who isn’t bought and paid for by corporate money. Otherwise, we can all celebrate how well the status quo in that regard is working out for us.
*Doesn’t anyone notice that between 16 & 18 years is the max for Congresspersons.
Suddenly, they wind up with ethic violations, personal problems or worse! Sort of reminds of those Southern Sheriffs. They get to serve two terms and if they don’t leave after that….something terrible happens to them or their families!
We loved Jim Traficant and Bob Dornan. Even Dan Rostonkowski was a victim of the 18 year jinx!
Who needs term limits for Congresspeople? But then there is the Senate…..hmmm, how about that Bob Byrd? Stennis…and so it goes!
